Placental Lakes

About two weeks ago I was "diagnosed" with this. Has anyone had any experience with it? I know that it isn't really a big medical dilemma, the only concern is it causing the baby to not grow as much as he should.

  • I've never heard of this either. I just Googled it. Did they say you have a lot of them? From what I read it is pretty normal to have them but said multiple ones can restrict fetal growth. What has your OB said. Sorry that you gotta worry about it. Sending you hugs.
  • From what I see on the ultrasounds, it looks like it takes up the top half, maybe 1/3 of the placenta. But baby boy was weighing in a 1 pound 1 ounce at 22 weeks, so I assume all is good. I was just curious if anyone else was having to see a specialist about it. We have to go to them every 4 weeks on top of the regular OB, only here we get ultrasounds, regular OB is just doppler at this point.

  • I have a placental lake where the cord meets the placenta. They found it at the anatomy scan. My OB said it happens so rarely there isn't much research. We will do 1 or 2 more ultrasounds to monitor growth but she's not worried so I'm trying not to be either.

  • Try not to worry!! I have a different placental abnormality and also have to see a specialist to check growth every 4 weeks. Doctor said it was just them being extra cautious and that in lower SES areas they probably wouldn't even do regular checks because there was such a low risk of it actually affecting growth. At my last growth check, she was in the 70th percentile. Definitely doesn't seem like she's having trouble growing!
  • I have one too and they haven't done anything special for me since I found out at 22 weeks
