Do I really need a glider?

I've been reading reviews online and some moms say they couldn't live without a glider while others never used it.

I found one I really like with colors that complement the nursery. However SO doesn't think I'll be comfortable on that. He rather buy a rocking recliner. I guess I don't want to spend unnecessary money.

What have you all gotten for your nursery?

My mother had an old rocking chair laying around her house that I decided to refurbish. Otherwise I wouldn't have one because they're pretty pricey

We're using an old recliner. We used the same one for DD and it's super comfy. It's really nice to be able to recline in the night time feedings and in general. It's also super plush and makes it more comfortable. Think about where you'll be able to rest your arm with baby in it. I would definitely want something in the nursery (or wherever LO is sleeping) though because you will need somewhere to sit while feeding at night (unless you bed share.)

I have a glider and I do use it. BUT I wish it was a recliner. I have fallen asleep in the glider many times and strained my neck bad.

I like that my short legs can reach the floor in a glider, it's comfortable and quiet, etc. Just wish it reclined. I'd rather spend a little more and be even more comfortable.

I used mine all the time with my first baby. Because we had it out in the living room. With my second I moved it into the nursery and never used it. Always rocked and nursed in front of the TV. Haha

This is my SO's concern. He wants me to be able to recline and nap there if I want to. Esp because I have a bad back and neck.

I'd say either are great to have. Baby might not like being rocked and that's why I think some moms don't recommend it. If you get a rocker recliner like your SO suggested, you could repurpose it easier if needed. I have a glider personally and I love it now so if baby girl hates it, I'll make it my reading chair!

Lol to this! It does depend on where it's at here too. I just move it if I find I need it in one room more than another. Right now it's parked in the nursery but it will be moved to our bedroom once she's born (we're having a homebirth so I don't want it in the way, as we will set up the birth tub in our room and that takes up some space along with midwives and their birth supplies).

My glider is a basic wooden one, not the oversized ones. So it is easier to maneuver between rooms.

I agree about being flexible about where to leave the chair. We have ours in our bedroom because that's where DD2 will sleep for awhile. We have an old wooden rocking chair in the nursery for now. Once we move LO to her room we will move the recliner there too. If needed we will bring the rocker down to the family room where there is the big TV.

I never had one for #1, I either took her to sit in my bed, or out to the couch, or walked and swayed. This house we've got lots of room, but I was quite comfy with my couch-nest last time, so I'm still skipping it. It's whatever you're most comfy with, really. If you have a bad back and neck I'd go with the recliner.

I loved my rocker/glider with the gliding ottoman. I have to agree with @WDDCH I'd recommend something you don't mind sleeping in. Sometimes my neck got strained and if DD1 was sick (and basically slept in my arms), I'd have to move to the living room.

I have a rocking recliner so never saw the need for a glider. Plus the recliner is something we use on a daily basis.

I'm a FTM and I love the glider we purchased, it wasn't too expensive and it came with the gliding foot rest. I sit in it all the time and have fallen a sleep in it once or twice.. I just hope baby likes it as much as I do lol

We got a la-z boy recliner that rocks when I was pregnant with #1 and it was the best purchase ever! I've ended up having Dh move it into our bedroom at the end of each of my pregnancies and I sleep in it often not to mention it's so much more comfortable for those marathon nursing sessions. We figured it was a better investment because we could more easily repurpose an actual recliner and use it in our living room where as a glider would look silly with our other furniture. I'd say if you're gonna spend the money look at it as an investment and get something super comfy you could potentially sleep in, if it's not you won't end up using it.

I had a mom suggest a computer chair and we ended up with one. I wanted the recline option without paying 400 plus dollars. We bought a 160 dollar leather computer chair. I love it I can rock and recline the head rest is adjustable for my husband and i. We're different heights. It has adjustable lumbar support and super cushion arm rests. I've spent more time sitting up in nursery for no other reason than that chair recently. I also like we can roll it around out of way super easy. It will also replace my husband's computer chair which is a sad fold out when we're done in the nursery. I can send you the link from staples if you'd like

I have a rocker and ottoman in DDs room but I just got a recliner for my room. I'd much rather the chair puts my legs up while I'm holding the baby than I put them up myself. Sounds silly...til you're holding a sleeping baby

I have a glider and ottoman for DD but I would love to have a gliding recliner. Those things are amazing!!!! And so comfy! I spent a LOT of time in Dd glider and it was honestly not that comfortable. But it is really practical to have one

@Yiggle09 yes please. I'd love to see the link. That sounds like a good idea. I can get something like what you described for upstairs and a nice recliner for the living room where the TV is and where I suspect I'll be most of the time.

Honestly I don't think I know anyone that has ever used a glider or a rocking chair. It is not necessary at all. That being said lots of things are not a necessity but that doesn't mean you shouldn't get it.

I don't like rockers or gliders because I get motion sick.

I have an IKEA bentwood Poang chair in the baby's room, it has a little bounce to it.

Love mine, used it all the time. Set it up in the living room again. I got it used on Craigslist, so I could get a nice Dutailier glider instead of a cheap one but for the same price.

I have a glider, but it's not comfortable to sit in for long periods of time. I ended up spending the majority of my time rocking my oldest in the recliner in the living room because 1) it's comfy and 2) that's where the tv is.

Can I ask? FTM here. How do you fall asleep in the chair safely while holding the baby? I've seen it mentioned a few times here as a reason to get a recliner. I feel like it's very likely I could fall asleep so just wondering if there's a secret to making sure the baby's secure.

We boughta lazy boy chair so after baby we can move it into the living room also very comfy for those long nursing sessions and sleepless nights...atleast ill be able to doze off and on comfortably with baby.

We bought a la z boy as well and love it. Got it in a neutral color to blend in with any furniture. As far as falling asleep. It happens. I had a over supply and heavy let down so putting my feet up and reclining And nursing that way helped slow the flow. Being in that position it just makes you that much more sleepy. She slept a lot on my chest. It seemed to be the only way I could sleep in the beginning. You'd be surprised about how aware you are when they are sleeping on you.

You're actually not supposed to fall asleep with the baby in a recliner or glider. There's no real safe way to do it (of course, it happens, those first weeks are exhausting). The only "approved" way for baby to sleep is on its back in an empty crib with a firm mattress.

We don't have a recliner, rocking chair, or glider. We don't see a need to spend hundreds of dollars on it and there's no room.

This! It was really weird how heightened my senses became after my fm daughter was born. I used to be able to sleep through anything; now I hear every sound she makes from across the house. It's weird. She slept on my chest for the first two months. I caught a lot of crap for it from in laws, but I could get four hours out of her on my chest at two weeks old vs two hours in the bassinet. I wanted the four hours. And I was completely aware of every move she made.
