rock n play - is it safe?

Hi moms! I wanted to know what you thought about LO sleeping in the rock n play. Is it safe? LO sleeps in the big boy crib typically but he often naps on the rock n play and that's when I want to nap (sleep when baby sleeps, right?!). Also, on particularly fussy nights sometimes it's the only thing he will fall asleep in. However, it's not quite flat on your back with nothing in the crib as recommended for SIDS. what do you all think?

Re: rock n play - is it safe?

  • My LO has been sleeping in his everyday since we got home from the hospital. He is still on his back, just elevated a bit. You can have nothing else in there but I swaddle him

  • We use it every night I swaddle him and put him to sleep in it. He only sleeps in it at night time.
  • We also use it every night, with a swaddle. The only thing I've heard about the RNP is that it can increase the risk of having a flat head.
  • I personally don't use them because they aren't recommended for sleep and I never wanted to deal with the crib transition. I had really fussy reflux twins so I definitely see why people would use them. I'm not going to pretend to be a mommy saint that doesn't use things to make my life easier, but this is just one I don't. No judgement, sleep deprivation is awful!

I hear you. I have started wondering how difficult the sleep transition will be. I am going to start having him nap in his crib during the day but not sure what age I will start
  • DS sleeps in his during the night and during naps. He is very congested right now and I think him sleeping at an angle helps him breathe easier. It also makes my nights much easier.
  • DD naps in it during the day. If that's what gets your LO to sleep I am all for it!

DD1 slept in her swing in the living room for a month when she was a baby. It was the ONLY way she would sleep so we did what we had to do.
  • My sister's pediatrician recommended it for her son who had reflux so I would imagine it is safe. She did have a hard time transitioning to a crib but I think after three or four nights they got through it.
  • Thanks moms!
  • DS slept in one the first 4ish months. I put DD in it the night we came home. She loves it. As PP said the only thing I've heard negative is flat head. LO can get that being left anywhere too long though

  • It's known to cause a neck problem called torticollis. There is also a warning on the back of it that says it's not recommended to let a baby sleep on a surface that isn't flat. My pediatrician said it isn't safe for sleep, but fine for hanging out on when supervised. We use it for DS to sit in while we eat dinner, or if I'm taking a bath and can watch him, etc.

  • They do not even sell these in Canada.
  • I am pretty sure DS's flat head was from the 3wks he slept in the RnP.

  • I asked the pediatrician about this, she said she doesn't recommend it unless, like others have said, the baby has reflux. She said they always recommend they sleep flat on their back. That being said, I do put her in hers to sleep during the day (she's only a week old) bc I like to have her in the room with me.
