Bright red bleeding 11wks, but baby looks good

Hey guys, just wanting to hear what other people's experiences were.

I was bleeding bright red with some clots this morning but experiencing no cramps or pain whatsoever. My husband and I went to the ER per the nurse's advice; our OB office isn't open on weekends. When we got there they did a pelvic exam and also an ultrasound. We're sitting there, freaking out, because I have had no ultrasounds or even a heartbeat check this whole time, so I didn't know what to expect.

The second the wand touched my skin, bam, there the baby was. I got to see him/her somersault, wiggle, flail his/her little arms and legs, and the heartbeat was strong and obvious. Baby's alive!! Oh, man, I cried; I had no idea what to expect.

My cervix was tightly closed and it was only a small trickle of blood, but I am still bleeding. They told me to go in again tomorrow for another check and see how things are, but the doctor and nurses seemed optimistic. The doctor said 1/3 of pregnancies see some bleeding like this, so I wanted to ask you all if you've experienced things like this, where the baby was alive and active, and how did it turn out? What diagnosis?

Any experiences you can share I would appreciate. Thanks everyone.

Re: Bright red bleeding 11wks, but baby looks good

  • I had some spotting for about 24 hours around week 8, and I'm now 12 weeks 2 days. Baby is growing strong and ive had no bleeding since. The doctors couldn't really tell me why I was bleeding and diagnosed it as a "threatened miscarriage ", which is basically what they always say when there is any bleeding during pregnancy. Some light bleeding is actually fairly common during pregnancy for some women, but the doctors won't say that and that tends to freak us out more. What helped ease my anxiety was getting elective ultrasounds basically every week until I hit 12 weeks. Don't stress out unless the bleed starts to include large clots or you start getting some serious cramping going along with it.

  • No experience with bright red bleeding (although I did have some brown spotting this week and the baby looked ok after a U/S). I was told to take it easy after that, so no sex, lifting or exercise and my dr said that bleeding is common in the first tri.

Sending lots of good vibes and T&P's for you. Take it easy now, mama! :)
  • I have had bright red bleeding throughout my pregnancy so far and was just diagnosed last week with a small Subchorionic Bleed. They discovered it at my 11 week ultrasound after a scary bleed. Baby is growing wonderfully. Maybe it's possible you had a clot that bled out. Take it easy and listen to your doctors. :)

  • I had almost the same experience last week at just shy of 10 weeks. I started gushing blood - like filled a pad within 2 hours. I've had miscarriages before and was certain I was losing this one. But just like you, as soon as the ER tech put the u/s wand on my belly, I could see the baby moving all over. At the ER, they told me the same thing they told you - bleeding can be normal. Baby looks good. Take it easy. Follow up with your doctor. My doctor had me come in for an ultrasound later that week and diagnosed me with a subchorionic hematoma - basically a bruise on the uterus than can cause bleeding. My doctor wasn't worried and said that most of the time these kind of hematomas resolve themselves, but I'll have a few more follow-up ultrasounds to make sure it's shrinking.

My advice to you would be to call your OB and get in for an appointment. The ER doctors aren't OB experts.

Yeah, the ER doctors told me to go to the OB clinic when they open on Monday, so I'll be talking to them tomorrow (I don't have a regular OB; it's whoever is there at the time, which I knew going in). What's going on with me sounds a lot like your situation. I wish you lots of luck! God knows that's a scary thing to go through.

  • i also had bright red bleeding at week 9, when my doctor did ultrasound baby was fine and they never told me a reason why i had bleeding, they just said it happens some times and take it easy. I had spotting again on this weekend at 11 weeks, I have an ultrasound schedule for Wednesday but i still called my doctor this morning and she said since it was just spotting and now stopped i should not worry. But i know i wont relax until wednesday
  • Thanks for all the responses, everyone! I went to the OB clinic yesterday and saw the baby moving and with a good heartbeat again, bleeding has almost totally stopped, and the doctor said she saw no indication that anything was wrong or that something would prevent the pregnancy from proceeding normally.

I feel so much better! Thanks everyone!

  • This literally happened to me today. Gushing blood no cramps or pain. Although they did not let me see the ultrasound in the ER, the doctor said the baby looked fine and the heartbeat was strong. It was incredibly scary as we just experienced a miscarriage in May, but thankfully we left this ER visit with positive news. I am nervous though as my OB is going on vacation for a week, i think i will try to see her tomorrow just as a walk in (eesh). My next US is on the 8th and next appointment with her is on the 10th. She might have me just wait.

Good luck to all you mamas out there!

Glad to hear that your baby is okay! It's too bad they wouldn't let you see it--that sucks! It meant a lot to me to get to see the little guy's heartbeat and movement myself... but they wouldn't tell you it was okay if it wasn't, so hang in there.

My bleeding stopped totally after about 2 days, I still haven't felt a single cramp and my pregnancy symptoms are strong; I hope everything stays good for you, too. I wish you and your little one all the best!

  • My SIL has been bleeding since 8 weeks and she is now 18. Her OB saw her every 2 weeks to check on baby and the bleeding. Baby has been perfectly fine this far and her OB does not seem concerned. I would express your concerns with your OB and hopefully that will put you more at ease.
  • Just the other night I had a similar experience. 11 weeks pregnant and Bright red bleeding and I also passed a blood clot. Went to see my Dr the next morning and had another U/S done. Baby was fine. Pretty much the Dr didn't know why I was bleeding. He said to take it easy for the next week. Gave me a Dr's note to get off work and that's what I'm currently doing. The bleeding has stopped. But kinda sucks to not have answers. I've done some research and read similar stories... not much answers on the Web either. Just make sure to take it easy!

Bleeding seems like it just happens for some pregnancies... My nurse at the OB clinic said she bled for 6 months while she was pregnant! Her daughter is now 19 and starting college :)

  • I am so happy to have found this thread! I had a similar experience & posted in on 1st tri. I'm glad to hear so much positive feeback. The only thing that sounds different with mine, is they were actually able to see fluid built up in my US. I did not receive much information at all, just to wait & see (torture).

Did anyone else have fluid found in their US?

  • Thank goodness for this thread! I'm 11w4d and just had some gushing, bright red blood this evening. I never had bleeding in my first pregnancy, so I'm pretty freaked out. I'm not having any cramps which is reassuring, but having to wait until tomorrow to go see my doc is torture! I'm going to stay positive thanks to all of the experiences I've read about here.

  • Went to the doc today, and everything is fine with baby! Thank goodness. I was diagnosed with 2 hematomas in my uterus. I'm assuming this is the same as the subchorionic hematomas mentioned above. They are supposed to go away on their own - the body should reabsorb them. What a relief to see that little baby on the US! I hope everyone else is doing well.

Yay, I'm so glad that this thread helped someone! It's great to get to see that the baby is all right, isn't it?

For me personally, it's been over 3 weeks since I had my bleeding and there's been no bleeding or cramps since then. I've had a very healthy ultrasound, too. Feeling out of the danger zone now so I'm happy about that. :) I hope things go that way with you, too.

I'm so glad your baby was fine and I wish you all the best with your pregnancy!

  • I bled at 8 and 12 weeks with my last pregnancy.....freaked me out horribly. This time I had cramping and bleeding at 13 weeks and still everything looks good. MD says it just happens. I started to spot last well and cramp so I took it easy and went in yesterday to a strong heartbeat. What I've learned.......I just can't control it so I can't get worked up about it. Stay hydrated, rest if needed and remember we are almost past (if not already past) the highest time of risk for what we are all fearing! Keep holding them in mamas!
  • I am 17 weeks now at 11 weeks I went to er with heavy bright red bleeding. I was sure was having a miscarriage because haf one earlier this year. I was shocked when saw the baby moving snd had heartbeat. They found there is a large hematoma behind my placenta. They said it's common to get them and no treatment to get rid of or prevent. They usually work themselves out. It can increase the chances of miscarriage but most pregnancies continue on.They said I may bleed rest of pregnancy because of size of mine and must be on bed rest and drink lots of fluids and no sex. The doctor not overly concerned as long as baby has a strong heartbeat and developing and bleeding doesn't increase. I hope everything turns out ok for you.
  • I had bright red bleeding in my second pregnancy around 34 weeks (enough to need a panty liner). We went to the ER because I had never had bleeding in my first pregnancy so it was concerning to see bright red. It turned out, we'd had sex the night before and it irritated my cervix. Doctor said it is very common. This is my 3rd pregnancy and I had some light brown bleeding at 13 weeks (again not more than panty liner needed) but I was a bit concerned. My midwife said it's most likely trapped blood behind the placenta making its way out and it's not a concern as long as I don't cramp. I didn't have cramping and the bleeding stopped after a couple days. We are not 17 weeks and feeling good. Hope the rest of your pregnancy is uneventful
