US TECH QUESTION

I get ultrasounds done every week because my LO is stubborn (like his father lol) and never moves for his stress test. My tech is super rude and last week I asked her if she knew how big he was and she rolled her eyes and said my doctor didn't send an order for measurements so she couldn't tell me. Is she not allowed to measure him without doctors orders? It's so exciting for me to see my LO and she is just terrible about it. Also when I leave she always gripes about seeing me next week and how my US are pointless because he is fine every time.

Re: US TECH QUESTION

  • While it is not right how rude they are to you, no they technically do not have to do anything not ordered and really aren't supposed to. They can get in trouble for it. Sorry they are not nice though!

  • Thank you. It's hard to tell if she just didn't want to or couldn't because of her attitude.
  • I would be super angry that she is saying your US Is pointless because everything is fine. The point of the US is make sure everything is fine! What does she want for something to be wrong? You should say, yeah I hate it when I have to do my job too.
  • I would have to say something to her about her shitty attitude. Or say something to your doc or both. there is a reason your doctor ordered them and if she can't be positive then she should keep her comments to herself
  • Not cool Tech not cool...I would tell you doctor about her attitude and ask if he could add the measurement to the next order. Happy to hear you LO is doing just fine:)
  • While my tech isn't downright rude like yours seems to be, mine doesn't have bedside manners at all.  She is sorta cold and stand offish.  It's frustrating because it's an exciting time and while I don't need her to share my excitement, it wouldn't hurt for her to be a bit friendlier.

  • I've only had 2 ultrasounds, one at 20weeks & one at 31. I will probably be going every 2 weeks to keep an eye on my fluid leve. There are a few different ultrasound techs at my office, and one of them is also very rude and short when asking questions. I mentioned something to my doctor and she giggled like she had heard this before. I would definitley recommend calling your office and asking to speak to the office manager. Bad days or not, leave your sh**ty attitude at the door!!
  • You should definitely say something to someone at the office. My father in law is one of the senior partners of the practice I go to and he says that they always want to hear these things so they can remedy them. It's supposed to be an exciting time and you should feel as comfortable as possible and bad attitudes don't help.

Side note--my father in law is not my doctor and I have my doctors cell phone number to call when I go in to labor so that if my father in law is on call there isn't an issue. You wouldn't believe how many people ask if my father in law is going to deliver the baby.
  • It's sad that some people don't enjoy their jobs.  I would think being an Ultrasound tech would be something that the person would enjoy doing, even if they see someone every week.  It's sad that also she is making you feel uncomfortable at a very uncertain and anxious time in your life.

I would definitely mention her attitude to your doctor.   And possibly ask for someone else.  They are getting paid to do a job, and paid quite well most likely.  If they can't do it with a caring and professional attitude then maybe they shouldn't be in that job!  Good luck!

  • If you're on a schedule and your schedule os packed, you don't always have time to do anything besides whats ordered. Plus any images taken have to be sent to the radiologist and the radiologist has to read every single picture. With that said, weighing your baby for curiosity may get that tech yelled at by her doctor (I am not an us tech, but i am a mammo/ct/xray tech).
