I didn't know I was pregnant...

Ladies, it's one of my guilty pleasures and now that I am pregnant I can't get over it. That's got to be crazy just suddenly being in pain and having a baby. I'm pretty sure that at this point none of us have to worry about a surprise baby.

Re: I didn't know I was pregnant...

  • I have a friend who found out at 5 months! I not even sure how. I never said or questioned how she never knew because of no monthly visiter.... I wanted to! I knew both times the day I was suppose to get it by noon... I get it so very regular before noon! Its obnoxious!!!! I have yet to figure out the science how people don't know, and just sit to poop and boom a baby poops out! I don't have cable any more can't watch the guilty pleasure! Do you think these are totally made up, lying or just stupid/in such denial they refuse to believe they are pregnant!?

  • Is this on TLC? I may try to catch an episode. Having now experienced pregnancy, I find it absolute amazing that someone could honestly not know. And I haven't even been that sick. I'm 22 weeks and my belly would be a dead giveaway.
  • I haven't seen that show, but I know two people that had babies and claimed they didn't know they were pregnant. The first, it was her 5th child. She says she continued to have her period through out the pregnancy- which did not happen with any of her other kids. She never felt the baby kick (anterior placenta maybe?) and never had morning sickness, heartburn, etc. I saw her about a month before she had the baby and could tell she had gained a little weight- but she didn't look pregnant. She says even her labor was weird. She thought she had to go to the bathroom, had some severe pain for just a few minutes, and then all of the sudden realized she was having a baby. The baby was born just minutes later.

The second person I do not know very well- she is the younger sister of a friend of mine. She says her periods were never regular, so she wasn't overly concerned that it was missing. She did take a pregnancy test at one point, but it came back negative. She never felt the baby move, etc. One day she went to the ER with severe stomach pain, and 2 days later went home with a baby.

I really don't know if these two are telling the truth or not. I do suspect that there was some denial going on, especially in the 2nd case, but I just don't know for sure.
  • I love that show and was fascinated enough to google it a couple hours! @armywife8289 there is a medical term for it called "cryptic pregnancy." The women often didn't have regular periods before and/or spotted often enough to think they were having irregular periods. Some had other conditions with similiar symptoms like PCOS. A lot actually weren't supposed to be able to get pregnant (long standing infertillity issues or failed sterilization tubes tied or husband snipped). Part of cryptic pregnancy is the women often have lower HCG so pregnancy tests sometimes don't work (one girl had 3 at the doctor that all said negative when she was pregnant).  Many already had pregnancies with very obvious symptoms so when they weren't sick and busy with often very young children they didn't notice or assumed it was stress. Most have a tilted uterus or were overweight so they didn't show. Cryptic pregnancy actually is more common than you'd think but most people typically have enough vague symptoms that someone figures it out by 5-6 months the show is crazy because they are usually about full term when they figure it out.

I'm 24 weeks and my symptoms have been relatively mild and nothing has lasted long enough that I would seek medical advice so I could see where it could happen especially if you were breastfeeding or on depo (both of which can prevent a period). The ones with really young kids sometimes think they are struggling to lose the baby weight from the last pregnancy or the weight gain coincides with vacation or the holidays.
  • @armywife8289 BTW I think some are that clueless. I think only 2-3 episodes were FTM without fertility issues, a handfull wanted babies so bad but had struggle with years of infertility and failed treatments. The majority had been pregnant before and had much milder symptoms or had a lot of stress at the time.
  • I know how crazy it sounds to us, but I believe it can happen. A friend of mine didn't know she was pregnant until 8 months along because she has PCO and multiple other female issues that didn't make it abnormal for her to have one maybe two periods a year. She never showed beyond having a little belly, either and only gained a little weight. Neither of which is abnormal for the issues she has. She actually only found out about her baby during an ovarian ultrasound the dr ordered to check for cysts. Talk about shock. Lol.
  • It always sounded ridiculous to me but then I watched it. The first episode I saw the woman was very athletic and had a period throughout. She didn't gain any weight and had no symptoms. The baby was very small but healthy.

@MegStark I thought the same thing. Oh well.
  • There was a girl not far from me who went to the doctor for cramping pain and ended up giving birth- true story!
The baby grew up the back so she never got much of a bump and she apparently still got a period.
    Crazy stuff!!
  • My SIL didn't know til she was 32 weeks pregnant. She was told the likeliness of her being able to get pregnant was very slim as she only had a period everyone 4-6 months. (Her mom had the same thing, and did get pregnant with two kids within 10 months.) She did not have any symptoms of pregnancy until she had abdominal pains at 32 weeks and went in for an ultrasound to look for gallstones and found a baby. The baby was miraculously healthy, although a bit underweight, even though she had been casually drinking and not taking care of her body.
  • My mom didn't find out with me until she was over 4 months. She had struggled a lot to get pregnant with my brother and was told she'd likely not be able to get pregnant again. She still took birth control to manage heavy periods.

So she was overweight, periods were few and far between, infertility.... she wasn't sick past saying a couple foods upset her stomach, never showed even later in the pregnancy and kept wearing normal clothing throughout, and had actually lost weight throughout. She never felt much movement with either pregnancy either.

When she found out she had gone in for a regular checkup and mentioned feeling a bit odd and hadn't had a period yet, but that wasn't unusual. The doctor decided to test to be safe and it was positive.

I can very much believe it's possible.
  • I used to watch that show until I got pregnant haha! What about One Born Every Minute.. has anyone watched? They have the episodes on YouTube and show mom going through the birthing process.
  • What is this show called
  • So there's this mom at my daughters school she's a little out there and apparently went through her whole pregnancy not knowing she was pregnant and gave birth to a 2lbs baby boy, most are saying she does drugs and she's already been asked to leave school grounds for showing up drunk. How sad and crazy.
  • lol! Sorry ladies. I should've put TLC or something on the thread line. I know how much we love the juicy stuff in our boards! Lots of stories out there of real I didn't know I was pregnant people. Definitely shocking cause pregnancy has changed SO MUCH of my health/body. I'm definitely sensitive to hormonal changes.

  • I have PCOS and knew figured out I was pregnant after a few months...
Since my periods are always irregular I have constantly taken pregnancy tests for years if they're more than a few months late just to make sure...so if they knew they had irregular periods that is something they should be aware that could be a possibility, I also believe A lot of it denial. Flat out.
  • I worked with a woman who called in in labor. She was a large woman so no bump, had crazy periods and frequently went months without one so she didn't think anything of it. Her daughter ended up having a neural tube defect of some sort and was quadriplegic which explained why she felt no movement. Series of crazy events!
  • I've watched the show, but I just don't believe anyone could carry a baby to term and not know. I understand some women have irregular periods or even spot/bleed throughout the pregnancy, also understand that some women have relatively few symptoms. But I find it IMPOSSIBLE to believe you wouldn't notice something moving inside you. DS was franck breech and not able to move much from 7-8.5 months, but he would stretch and it felt like my stomach was going to burst. Now with DD, I have an anterior placenta, and while I can't feel her where the placenta is, I can feel her boucing on my bladder and kicking into my ribs. The only way I could see someone overlooking that feeling is a brand new mom...I can't count the number of times I got gas post partum and it would feel just like the baby moving.
  • My sister inlaw fell preggers with a little girl but at 25 weeks and 5 days she went into labour and because she was under the 26 week mark they go by on our hospital the doctors refused to save her, she was told it was caused by an infection she got from using soap and shower gels anyways 6 months later and while still having very heavy periods throughout she ended up being taken into hospital for something and that's when she found out she was 5 months pregnant again, I think the heavy periods and the loss of her daughter right beforehand made her not even think she could be pregnant again, plus she doesn't get morning sickness or a tummy till the last month or 2

Yes!! Been watching through all the episodes, I love it
  • My periods Have been irregular for about 3 years (since I've been off the pill) I had tests done then to make sure everything was fine. They to me that it could just be my lack of good diet & regular exercise. So fast forward 3 yrs later I found out I was almost 6 mos pregnant. I had no symptoms that would make me think I should take a test. I've always been responsible about taking care of my body. Especially going to dr. So it could happen. LoL!
  • That is pretty much my favorite show of all time. This actually happened to my husband's stepmother with their youngest daughter. She thought she was going through menopause because she was in her 50's and a lot of the symptoms match up with that. She had even gone to the doctor and been told she was going through menopause. Anyway, one day she was in lots of pain, thought she was dying, and ended up coming home with a baby.

Nah... My sister was the same.. She found out late but she had a very inconsistent cycle and we think may have had spotting throughout her first trimester that may have fooled her. She's no idiot so I think if you have a hit or miss cycle and gain all over, as she did, it's easy to mistake it for something else. I still can't figure out how she rationalized her first trimester BS though...
