What to eat....

so I've been told to avoid too many carbs like pasta and bread and potato etc. yet as I told my obgyn that's all I can keep down with the sickness!!!
Anyone found any different foods to help with the sickness that are not carbs?
I can get away with melon and bananas some mornings but God knows what else haha
My main addiction is mash potato and gravy!!
What foods are you all eating to help?

Re: What to eat....

  • I was told by my doctor when I was sick, if you're having trouble keeping things down then the best thing to eat is what will stay down.

  • Doctor also told me to eat absolutely anything that stays down. If you're worried about the carbs try substituting sweet potato for regular potato. I eat about 2 sweet potatos a day because it's one of the only things I can keep down and I'm trying not to each so much bread atm. Also try switching the pasta for whole wheat versions of the pasta, it doesn't help the carb count but it is a lot easier for your body to process. If all you can eat is plain bread, then do it. Anything is better than eating something super healthy then throwing it up again.

This is what I was told too. I think they are probably wanting you to avoid too many ultra-processed carbs by warning you about bread and pasta. @cawalp had some good substitution ideas, if you can keep those down they are what I would suggest too.
  • If you're throwing up food, any food that can stay down is good according to my doctor.

There are lots of healthy alternatives to refined white pasta. Some ideas: brown rice, whole wheat pasta, quinoa, quinoa pasta, whole wheat or sprouted grain bread, oats. Have you ever tried purple potatoes? They are full of nutrients. Sweet potatoes also as PPs have mentioned. If you're struggling as much as you say you are with food, I'd be more concerned with your protein intake. Are you getting 75g+ per day?

Mashed potatoes usually have a ton of added fat. Could you try a baked potato with plain Greek yogurt (instead of sour cream) and other toppings? Good luck, hope you feel better!
  • I had really bad m/s and found Gluten Free bagels were a good alternative to the carby stuff I could keep down. I notice when I eat Gluten Free vs. regular breads my body digests them better and I don't feel so crappy.
  • Maybe you could try a cauliflower mash instead of a she'd potatoes, since that is a favorite of your. I've never actually tried it but I've heard people rave about it. I'm sure you can easily find a recipe
Above all, eat what you can keep down and as pp mentioned, make sure you're getting enough protein.

    Good luck!
  • Coming from someone who was sick with almost everything down to water, I feel your pain. Carbs were my best friend for weeks but they were the only thing I could stomach even though one of the doctors in my office advised to stay away. But when sick and barely able to eat, is consume whatever my body allowed to stay down. I was able to do sweet potatoes though so try those and regular baked potatoes, even plain.
  • I'm gonna go and get some sweet potatoes today and the different versions of pastas thanks girls!!
I am a little concerned with the protein yes as ever since I've been pregnant right from the start all meats have been a trigger to me, seeing or smelling meat is unbearable to me.
But I have been eating a little spinach to try and help this.
  • Greek yogurt has been my go to for protein, as meat still grosses me out sometimes. I also bought a blend of coconut, flax and Chia seeds at the grocery store and put 2 tablespoons of that in smoothies-great source of protein and hidden away, plus it helps with digestion :)
  • I had some pretty good luck with oatmeal, I would add some blueberries, Greek yogurt and a teaspoon of protein powder. Honestly I would just sneak a bit of protein powder in wherever I could. But it should be a good quality and don't over do it because too much can give you a sore tummy too.
  • Also peanut butter. On a spoon. Just take a nibble here and there
  • When I cant manage an actual meal and just want carbs, sometimes I'll do a protein bar instead. My body seems to think it's close enough to carbs to handle it
