January 2016 Moms

Anybody wanna talk plus-size maternity?

I'm 21 weeks, and really starting to finally show. I've picked up a few maternity items, and they're getting me by, in conjunction with all of the empire-waisted dresses I already owned.

What I bought a size up at Lane Bryant--hoping to kind of get me through are already too small, and I'm going to have to pick up some more things to get me through work this winter.
I'd love to hear people's opinions on different stores. For the sake of not wasting anyone's time, though, here's what I've figured out so far. To give you an idea of my shape, I'm about a size 20, with a large bust and no butt. Legs are a little thick, but not extreme. I'm average height, but with a long torso, and a 28" inseam.

OLD NAVY: As a bigger girl, I already owned some maternity items from Old Navy. Really, the only place the size seems to increase is the bust, so the few dresses I have from them are holding their own. I would be hesitant to buy something without a high waist from them, though, as the skirts don't seem to be too generous. I don't think what I have will last until January, but they're getting me through this awkward stage. Also, they only go up to XXL online, and aren't stocked in every store, so it makes it tough when you were already XXL or larger.

JC PENNEY AND KOHL'S: Only online, sadly, in our area, so haven't had the chance to try anything. I can say that we looked at the maternity section in its totality at our Kohls, and it seriously was only one 4-peg rack, and it was a mess, so even smaller moms might have a tough time there.

TARGET: I bought a Bella band from Target, thinking it might help me out, but I've grown from waist to inseam more than I have around, so this little item doesn't really help me. I have to wear my pants so low, since they're all short in the crotch, which makes me have to wear the band low, and it makes me feel like I have my underwear on over the pants. I don't fit the largest sizes available in the store, and tried a pair of maternity leggings, but they were so constricting on my calves, that I gave up halfway through putting them on. I will say that I've gotten several pairs of palazzo pants from the Ava and Viv line in the plus section, a size up, and love, love, love them. I bought one originally, and went back and bought another pair. Here's the link for those: https://www.target.com/p/women-s-plus-size-palazzo-pants-purple-tie-dye-ava-viv/-/A-16845553#prodSlot=_1_5

MOTHERHOOD: I really had low expectations at Motherhood, but I was pleasantly surprised. They had at least 6 racks of plus in-store, and the associate was very knowledgeable. She helped me find the right fit, and I came out with a pair of pants, several tops, and a dress. The dress is from their regular line, and the rest was from their plus line. I was pleasantly surprised that the pants were such a good fit. Generous in the thigh, but not huge, and the stretch top started right in the perfect place. I bought a pair of khakis, and plan to get a pair of jeans at some point, too. Of course, the pants are about 3-4 inches too long for me, but I'm used to that. Most of their tops are belted with a tie belt, and looking at them online, I hated them all. I discovered in-store, however, that they are much cuter if you just relocate the belt. They're all photographed below the belly, but look much better above the belly. People always complain about the quality of Motherhood, but I really didn't think it was too terrible. It's not the best, but it is certainly not bottom quality, either. All the stitching was good, and fabrics were a bit stiff before washing, but softened up after. It is a higher quality fabric than Old Navy or H&M, so if that helps with comparison, there it is.

That's what I've experienced so far. I have a few questions for anyone that can help, too.
1. I'm looking for decent leggings. Not boring black. I have boring black. Has anyone found fun printed leggings in plus size with the maternity belly?
2. I discovered a site called Pink Blush. I like what I see, but I have never spoken to anyone that has tried it. Has anyone ordered from them, and if so, what do you think? The prices seem fair, and the clothes are much prettier than any others I've seen. https://www.pinkblushmaternity.com/c-117-maternity-plus.aspx

I hope this helps, or can help others, too. I couldn't seem to find any groups for plus-size mamas, but I noticed a lot of month clubs did, so I'm putting it here!

Thanks!

Re: Anybody wanna talk plus-size maternity?

  • I'm plus size, not too big on top but very big butt and thighs. I just stick with the regular old navy plus roll over pants, they're perfect for maternity. I don't worry too much about fashion so for shirts I've just been sticking to regular stretchy long tanks for warm weather. For winter I'm going to wear the same thing and put an open cardigan or wrap type thing on top. Done. The only thing I'm concerned for is a winter coat, I doubt highly that I will find one anywhere that fits. I'll survive with layering and hoodies.

  • Thank you so much for starting this thread. I'm plus size also. Large all around (Torrid size 22-24, Walmart size 26). And I've been having a really hard time finding things for my size. Thank you so much for sharing pink blush maternity. I haven't ordered from them yet but I will and I'll let you know how it is. As for old navy I can't fit in most of their stuff and Motherhood in my area doesn't carry plus size in store. And I hate ordering clothes online especially since I'm between a 2 & 3x. Well anyway if I find anything I'll post and update on here.
  • Thank you for starting this!! I was going to start something awhile ago but have just been lurking on other boards to find other plus size mama threads. I am a size 18 and need to get some maternity pants. I have been wearing my torrid pants so far with them unbuttoned and they are ok, but it's about that time. I want to check out old nave or possibly try a size up in Torrid to see. I hate to spend a lot of money on things I won't wear a lot. I wear scrubs at work and will probably have to try maternity ones, however the only pair that I have tried on that are in store are literally huge at the ankle, the makers must think that your ankles grow as much as your stomach I went to three different stores and those are the only ones any one has in store!
  • I've had success with ordering tall t-shirts from Old Navy in an XXL. They're stretchy and long enough to go over my bump. Anything flowy ends up too short after draping over the bump.
  • Thanks for this thread.  I'm frustrated with finding work pants.  I was a size 18 with an hourglass shape.  I lost a good amount of weight before getting pregnant, so I have been fortunate to use my 'big' clothes to get through the summer.  My work pants are getting tight and I have had to rock the belly band a couple times.

I've been trying to stock up for the fall/winter because I think that I can use most of my current wardrobe to get through the hot weather.  I was also pleasantly surprised by Motherhood Maternity.  I have bought a bunch of casual pants and jeans from them.  They only have black pants in petite.  MM had a sale that ended yesterday and I grabbed a pair of petite black pants, regular grey (I'll have to get them hemmed), and some leggings.

Old Navy didn't have any plus sized pants that I would wear to work. JCP had some, but I stuck with MM since I have been able to try them on in the store.  I did like the tops I saw on Pink Blush.  I'll check them out later on.  I'll also check out Kohls.  Any other suggestions out there?

I'm just prepared to be very unhappy with my maternity wardrobe.  C'est la vie.

  • I'm not quite plus size but just wanted to add a comment on pink blush. Got a ton of tops and two dresses today, seem to be great material and most everything fit great but definitely tighter than the maternity wear I have from Motherhood, kohl's, and target. Unfortunately the top I like the best is way too tight across the chest. Going to try XL and cross my fingers!

  • I have been mostly making due up until now. I was a 16w prepregnancy at Lane Bryant. I was given a gift certificate to motherhood maternity so I stopped in there to see what they had. The MM here does not carry plus size except for some jeans. I tried on the plus size jeans in 1x and they were a little too roomy and felt like they'd stretch even more. I tried on the non-plus size in xl and they fit a little better, but maybe a smidge tight (hopefully they'll stretch). The full panel is really comfy though. I also got a few pair of full panel leggings in xl, and a couple dresses. The non-plus size tops and dresses are a little small in the chest.

I'm thinking I'll check out old navy and target soon. I'm gonna need tops soon! Thanks for starting this thread, plus size maternity is not easy!!!
  • I think on my next payday, I'll try Pink Blush. I wanted to add that I have a dress on order from eshakti.com right now, and I ordered a size up, so I'll let you know how that goes. I have a few non-maternity dresses from there (my bridesmaids' dresses were from there also) and really love the quality. They customize everything, so even though it's not maternity, you can request things longer, or with a different neckline, or even customize the whole fit of the dress. They go up to a size 36W, so you've got plenty of wiggle room. I'll try to add a picture when I get it.
I will say that one of the things that got me started on this is that I've been stuck in these maxi skirts and cap sleeve shirts. So sick of them! I keep joking to my husband that I look like a Duggar. (Not good.)
  • I'm a size 18 and I got my maternity shorts from target. I love the Liz Lange brand. They we very comfy and fit well. I can't wait for the pants in my size to come back in stock. And shirts I have just been buying XL maternity and they work fine. But haven't gotten many shirts my regular shirts still work for now at 21 weeks
  • I got a few great things from Pink Blush, but one shirt didn't even go over my ultra-large breasts.  My problem is my huge thighs.  I can't seem to find any jeans that fit my thighs without stretching in the crotch.  I have one pair from Motherhood Maternity, but can't afford three more pairs of them.  I don't wear dresses that often, and am afraid of what I'd look like in yoga pants!

  • Just wear the yoga pants with a long top, beleive me, no one cares. I wear them all the time and IDGAF, this is what I look like.
  • The only experience I have with maternity clothes are 3 maxi dresses I bought at old navy. I have lost weight before I got pregnant so I just used some of my older tank tops to wear during the hot months. I also work from home and don't get out much except for grocery shopping and dr appointments but I will need winter clothes to wear and looked at old navy for maternity jeans primarily bc I can't afford to spend too much. I figure a couple pairs of jeans that I can rotate and a few tops will do me fine bc like I said I don't really leave my house much except for when I have to.
  • I'm 18 weeks and haven't had to buy any maternity clothes yet. I lost almost 30lbs during my first trimester because of morning sickness, and eating healthier for baby. I typically wear a 20 or 22. I've skimped through the summer with yoga pants and blousy tops, but school for me starts up next week and I will need some maternity clothes. I live in Maine and have literally 0 stores near me that carry plus sizes in general let alone maternity plus!! Any tips of fit on these sites would be great. I'm fairly tall and rather busty and hate clothes shopping, so I'll take all the help I can get!
  • For my first pregnancy, I got away with a lot of my looser fitting plus tops with some dress pants from Motherhood. Also bought some cargo capris towards the end (DD was born in June 2014) so they've been helpful now. Bought a couple pairs of jeans from Motherhood as well as a few tops and leggings. Ordered plus size maternity through Kohls.com and got a couple cute tops. Also, at the time I was able to order plus size maternity clothes from Simply Be, but I haven't found any so far this pregnancy. Also agree that yoga pants are a good thing, and I did a lot of dresses with leggings (maternity and regular plus). Don't forget about pjs! I went with a lot of night gowns but eventually my boobs needed something more supportivd, and I got two plus size nursing maternity night gowns online and they're wonderful!
  • I wish I could get away with yoga pants, but I work in an office with a dress code. :(

I got a message that my dress from Eshakti should be delivered tomorrow, so there's that to look forward to!

Finally, I noticed PinkBlush is listed on Zulily right now, but only up to XL. Beware of Zulily's return (or no-return) policy!
  • Thank goodness for this thread!  After spending 25 minutes this morning trying to decide on an outfit, I'm so frustrated right now.  The top was flowy but has a elastic band that makes it fit like an empire waist.  Well that combined with dress pants that were too uncomfortable to snap over this swollen belly made for an almost sobbing morning.  :(

Prepregnancy I was losing weight and had gotten down to about an 18/20 (and some 22 tops).  I haven't gained much thus far due to no appetite and nausea so I can still wear some 18 pants and 2X/3X tops.  I'm really concerned that as I continue growing this belly, I don't be able to fit much of anything stylish.

I'm going to check out all the stores mentioned on the thread to see if I can find some cute things.  Some of my favorite plus-size stores are torrid.com, ashleystewart.com, chicandcurvy.com, along with Catos, It's Fashion, and others.

Let's definitely keep this thread going!
  • I got a pair of jeans at motherhood maternity because they were the only place I could find a 3x in petite. I'm 5'0 so I usually still have to hem them and they fit perfectly so FYI they run real short! But good for me :)

    Only crappy thing is the pockets are too small to hold my phone or wallet ;_;
  • Love this thread, I am plus size but can u believe people keep asking me if I am full term I am only 5 months but I must be the mother a a giant my stomach is huge.using strange clothes.
  • Mkay I bought a pair of boot cut size 12 full panel jeans from old Navy and a similar size M pair from motherhood. I'm 18w6d, and I'm tired of hiking them up. I've got big thighs and a smaller waist. And when I'm not pregnant I ALWAYS have to wear a belt. And now I can't. What to do?
  • Does anyone sell maternity overalls in the stores? I have to try stuff on, especially pants.

I try to tuck the top of the maternity stretch panel under my bra... it helps a little, but I too spend a lot of time hiking them up!
  • I saw Zulily has plus size maternity clothes today!

I have been combing thrift stores, and using a bella band to hold up my normal jeans.  I also ordered two pairs of maternity jeans from old navy, because the target full band jeans kept rolling down.

  • Mommas who have ordered from Pink Blush what size did you get? I'm leary to order because I hate mail returns. I'm an 18/20 pre-pregnancy and 5'10. I haven't gain any weight yet so still in my same size clothes and using a belly band with my pants. Tia!
  • I was size 26/28 prepregnancy and I know I'm going to balloon up to size 32/34 and it scares me. I'm looking at fullbeauty.com (previously onestopplus.com) for shirts because they go up to 6x. For pants I don't know what to do because I'm 5'9 with really long legs, very thick thighs, and a short torso.

I think I'm going to have to resort to moomoos and dresses in the third trimester.

  • I'm size 14w and have had great luck at JCP.  I order everything online since most stores don't carry it.  They have great sales.  I have also ordered from PinkBlush and they have cute stuff too, they are on Zullily a lot.  I found nice maternity leggings at Wal-Mart for about $13.00, they thick enough to where you don't see the color of your underwear.
I'm hoping my UGG's will fit in the winter.  Plan on wearing those with leggings and tunics.
What I cant find in plus size are the premium thicker leggings, like the ones pea in a pod sells from Splendid -___-.

I am also a plus sized FTM and have been sort of testing out all the online providers to find ones that work for me. I wore a 22/24 before pregnancy, but lost a decent amount of weight (about 15 to 20 lbs) in the first trimester. Most of my regular clothes fit until the past few weeks. I'm 20 weeks now.

Kohl's- It seems true to size. Their tops do run a little larger. I normally wear a 22/24 top and they recommended a 3x, but most are a little loose- still very wearable. (This is usually not the case for me- I have a very large bust.) The pants fit well in a 3x.

Motherhood Maternity- They usually carry the plus sized line at their larger stores; normally near a mall. I definitely needed the 3x in the shirt to accommodate the bust. Most of the shirts with the ties can be worn without them and actually look much better without. Their shirts hold up really well in the wash. Their pants seem to stretch a little at first, but shrink back when you wash them.

JCPenneys- I ended up returning everything o bought online: Really flimsy fabric and it all ran small.

Pink Blush- I only have one shirt so far, but good quality and fast shipping. Seems to fit true to size.

Oh and Kohl's jeans look way less like maternity jeans than Motherhood's!!
  • I'm so glad someone posted this! I'm a size 16 right now, at my highest I was a size 26/28 Lane Bryant. I had a bypass Sept 2014 and lost 115 pounds. Down to 210 right now. I haven't gained any weight this pregnancy yet but I seriously just look like a blob of fat. I looked at Destination Maternity for some pants, got a pair of full panel jeans, a nursing bra and a nursing top. I'm 21 weeks and still don't feel like I look pregnant, just fat. What size even qualifies as Plus? I still consider myself plus..
