Cat Bite

My cat just bit me, unprovoked, no reason at all. I'm seeing my OB first thing in the morning for a scheduled visit. I know cat bites can be serious. This may be a silly question, should I wait until tomorrow for my OB visit or go to the ER? I cleaned it with soap and water and put on antibiotic ointment and a band aide. Pic included.

Re: Cat Bite

  • I think can wait Til tomorrow but definetely get it looked at, very easily infected

  • Uh- I work at a humane society with cats... You need to go to the ER. Scratches can wait a little but bites are super serious. Esp when pregnant.
  • The er would give you a band aid and possibly antibiotics to prevent infection. You have an appointment in the morning. Your Dr. Would be able to do the same. I think you will be fine until then.
  • I think you'd be fine to wait until tomorrow, just put some neosporin and a bandaid on it. Get it checked out for sure though.
  • I guess if you're super worried, you could call a nurse line or something, but since you already have an appointment within the next 12-14 hours, I would imagine waiting is fine. Unless, of course, you have some signs of serious infection or extreme pain.

If you are that worried call your doc's after hours line. But I'm fairly certain they'll just tell you to clean it and come in as scheduled in the morning.
  • Another serious point of concern, Is the cat current on its vaccinations?
  • I'd say go to the ER honestly. Cats have really disgusting mouths and you should be put on antibiotics. Better safe than sorry.
  • Is it up to date on shots? Also, is it an indoor cat or does it hang out outside? My cats have neve been out of the house since kittens... If one of them bit me I wouldn't be concerned at all.
  • Btw, that is a serious bite for no reason. Mine nip every once in a while but never anything like that. I've had cats my whole life... That is a serious problem if it came out of nowhere.
  • I'd wash it really well and put some sort of disinfectant on it (rubbing alcohol, etc.), and then discuss with your OB tomorrow. Also, after you're all taken care of, you may want to schedule a vet visit to see if there may be something up with your kitty. If the bite really came out of nowhere, it could be something as minor as a spook (i.e., something scared the cat and he/she redirected the aggression to you), or something more serious (i.e., kitty is sick and lashing out because of pain). Good luck!
  • Thank you ladies! Cat is current on vaccines and is a strictly indoor cat since birth. My doc wasn't concerned at all and said just monitor for infection and fever. Deciding now if it's time to find a new home for our fur baby. I don't want him randomly attacking a baby. It was pretty scary to have come out of no where. I appreciate all of your responses!

  • I agree with the others suggesting to take your kitty to the vet - it's hard to know when cats are sick, so this unprovoked bite may be a sign that something is wrong.

  • Cats can also have a tough time with change and your cat may be sensing the baby coming. My cat can be very anxious and has bit me unprovoked on more than one occasion. Before my son was born I bought a few of the pheromone plug-ins that are supposed to have a relaxing effect on the cat and they really helped! Also, my cat loves my son and is very protective of him (though she prefers to keep some distance now that his is 18 mos and a little grabby). Don't give up on your kitty just yet. It might end up being just fine!
