GTKY: What fun quirk/talent do you want to pass down to your LO?

What's one quirk or special talent you'd like to pass down? I.E. Being able to play music by ear, tying a cherry stem with your tongue, champion speller, super powers, mad dancing skills, etc.

I am freakishly flexible, a talent passed down from my mother and maternal grandmother. I have always been able to walk on point, lay on my stomach and touch my toes to my head, put my legs behind head, etc. And I've never taken gymnastics. It's midway between gross and cool.

I hate folding fitted sheets! Can you teach me? lol

I can say the alphabet backwards freaskishly fast-- in english and french (a little slower)but I definitely don't care about passing that down.

I used to be able to bend my thumb back all the way to my wrist (backwards, not forwards), but I injured it in college and lost that party trick- womp womp.

I need to think of a new talent!

Well my husband is a very good artist so I hope both of our children inherit that - I can barely draw a decent stick figure, lol just kidding but I'm terrible. I am double-jointed in my elbows and can make my eyes "wiggle" lol I have no idea what the technical term for it is, my sister can do it too and everyone was always amazed by it. I don't know my only other skills were I was really good at softball/tennis.

ooh cooking is good. I'd like to definitely teach my kids to cook. My mom did a little, but I picked up a lot naturally. I love to cook when I have the time to do it.

Yes! My mom taught me the basics but she only cooks hardcore Mexican food. I like Americanized version of Mexican food, southern food and Italian food. I had to pick the rest of it up on my own. DH is completely lost when I comes to cooking. The best he will do is throw a potato in the microwave for 10 minutes and that's his baked potato. I tried teaching him how to make macaroni, he boiled the elbow pasta in milk! #fail!

I'm going to teach my kids how to gamble. I love to gamble ( casino and home games) played a lot of poker in school and was the poker tournament champion at my law school. I'll teach them how to play poker/ bluff/ read people/ calculate pot odds and also how to understand table game odds, which casino games to play and which to avoid.
I think poker skills translates well into valuable life skills ( I use them to negotiate, evaluate and detemine odds) and teaching them about casino games will make them bet smartly.

I had to use this the first 30 times once I found out there really is a way to fold these silly sheets!

My "talent" to pass on... eavesdropping. So rude, but I'm so good at it.

Being social. Love my DH, but he does't have the best social skills. But even growing up, they weren't super social- he never attended school dances, or prom, that type of stuff. Both my sisters and I were very social and I hope my kids get that, too.

I feel like it sounds stupid but I want to pass down my left handed-ness. I'm the only one in my direct family and I've always thought it was pretty unique.

SO would love her to just be adventure-seeking in general, but more importantly be interested in mountain biking. We mountain bike together (although he's much better than I am) but I know he wants her to be a tough cookie and maybe find what he has in his love for it.

I found this gem of a onesie at a second hand store and I bet she will wear it every day he dresses her.

@acuteangles Hahaha yessss! I mean I know I think like 10% of the population is left handed, but still. We have to learn be adaptable... Like using scissors and using a spiral notebook!

I hope LO gets DH's love of trying all foods. I've never seen someone who is less of a picky eater. The only thing he doesn't eat is olives (which I love), so it makes dinner selection pretty easy because I know he'll eat anything! He's also pretty fearless (was in the marines for 8 years) so I hope that means I won't get a scaredy cat

We hope our kid gets our passion for the outdoors and exercise. Especially since we're having a girl I want her to have my lack of squeamishness and not be afraid to get her hands dirty. I grew up always playing outside catching frogs and snakes and all that good stuff, changed my own oil in my car for years... I want her to know that looking pretty if she wants to is just fine, but she never needs a man to come kill a spider for her!
I hope she gets H's motivation, drive, and singing voice. She'd be unstoppable!

Can I just change my answer? I want our children to get all of their skills from their father lol - he is a wonderful artist like I said, but also he is just wired to be better at the arts than sports, he has a great singing voice as well, plays guitar and drums and is extremely smart. He's also left-handed!

My mom always jokes with me about him being so smart, if she doesn't know the answer to something she will say: "just ask Cody, he knows everything!"

Well my daughter got my husband's outdoorsy, fearless love of nature and all things country. So I'm hoping this kid gets my music gene. Then this kid will be able to hear a song and decide they are going to learn that and put jt in a key they can sing it in and do it all by ear

then I'll have a music buddy to jam with!

If I have a daughter I hope she's as flexible as I am, and as coordinated... Lol. (I did gymnastics forever, and would love my daughter to follow) other than that I hope my child has my wits and my sense of humor, and my ability to fall asleep at the drop of a dime anytime any place!

This is such a fun thread! From my husband, the weird thing I hope our daughter gets is his ability to do funny voices. He is amazing at it. To the point that I think he should quit his job and be a voice over artist, haha. In non quirky things, I hope she inherits my husband's gentleness and thoughtfulness. Oh and his fast metabolism! I definitely do not have that!

From me, quirk wise, it's not something you can really inherit, but I hope she develops my dry, pun based sense of humor, because I got that directly from my dad and he's no longer with us. I'd love for our terrible jokes to live on after I'm gone!

Non quirky trait wise, I hope she inherits my ability to speed read and sing/play musical instruments. I was an opera major before I switched to film and television (my current field) and I miss having music in the house all the time. (It's hard to make time to practice seriously with working long hours.) I'd love a little daughter filling the house with her voice and piano, guitar or whatever she chooses. (Though please god, not the drums, unless we invest in some sound proofing.)

DD got my dirty look/evil eye that I got from my mom. It's like something you can't control it just happens when someone pisses you off. I think it's cute right now... She also loves being outdoors and active like DH

I hope this LO gets my DH's ability to be good at everything - academics, sports, cooking, outdoor activities. He is also infinitely more patient and less anxious than me.

I hope our LO loves music and the outdoors as much as we both do. I hope LO gets my love of animals. Like @hlmdeck I hope that if we have a little girl she loves getting dirty and doesn't feel the need to be a damsel in distress. Lastly, I hope LO gets my ability to communicate, bc DH is the quiet type.

@brushesnbrunch - My DH was so impressed by my ability to fold a fitted sheet that I sometimes wonder if this is why he married me.

I definitely plan to teach my kids to cook. My mom taught me how when I was 11 or so, and it became one of my chores to cook dinner. Now I see she taught me so she wouldn't have to!

Also I'd like to teach them the foreign languages I know, and the Arabic alphabet. I figure might as well pass it on, because it's so easy for kids to learn languages.

From me: A deep love of reading (as well as great speed and comprehension), creativity, passion for social justice and his/her beliefs, and academic abilities.

From Dad: Cooking skills, athletic ability (I have never met someone more naturally talented at physical activities... I kid you not, he could easily run a half marathon tomorrow without training and do well. It's insane.), patience, and his easygoing personality.

From both of us: a healthy sense of adventure and a love of the outdoors. DS got that (he was hiking some pretty tough stuff with us at 18 months!) which is so much fun.

Also, DS definitely got the "must be active and moving at all times" gene from his father (both of them have three speeds: fast, faster, and sleeping)...so I'd loooove if this one were calmer and more still (like, willing and content to just sit and watch people or play with toys/read books/snuggle with me instead of climbing everything and running and spinning and jumping nonstop). I can barely keep up with one unusually busy little one!

Art (painting, drawing, w/e) from me

Music (Piano, guitar, bass, singing) from me and DH (also any instrument they want to learn . . . violin? sitar? banjo?)

Skateboarding (MAYBE . . . this is from DH but he's not sure because he wrecked his body in his teens/twenties skating, but he loved it)

Baking (I make a mean baklava

Reading (Not a skill/talent, but a dying hobby. I mean reading real books, with pages and everything)

Being a massive NERD! (If baby is a he, he will be Nightwing. If baby is a she, she will be Catwoman. And they will be well versed in Star Wars, Ninjas, DC, and Marvel)

@baya5: Yes! I totally feel you. H never reads books, it's just not his mode of learning/enjoyment. Part of it is that he can't focus (he has attention defecit disorder) and part of it is that he can't sit still. He LOVES dorky documentaries, though. It's weird to me, coming from a family of readers and being such an avid reader myself. I used to get in trouble for reading past my bedtime and started walking to the library by myself several times a week in second grade. So it's very natural to me and I hope my kids see that and feel the same.
