Those days when.... (Rant about my job) ((long))

so I work with people who have mental disabilities and I have a consumer is fairly large (over 400 pounds) who has to sit outside so her ride will come pick her up.. Well the weather has been a little chilly in the morning so she refuses to go outside to sit and then her ride drives past her house and then I have to take her to work... Today she plopped down so hard in the front seat of my car that she broke the seat So it no longer goes forward Or backwards using the lever... It just moves on its own AND popped my front passenger tire... She also thought the stick in my car didn't do anything broke the ball on the top of the stick (easy fix though.. I can go get a new ball at autozone or Walmart for $5 no problem) so now I have to go get my seat fixed, my tire replaced and I don't have a spare because it's already on the car because my husband borrowed my car and ran over some glass, and I have to go get a new top for my stick.. Thankfully she didn't know how to put the handbreak down because I know she would have.. But the company I work for said since she is the one that broke the face off of my radio yesterday and popped my tire and broke my seat today that her or her family has to pay for it.. Which means if I want her or her family to pay that I have to fill out what seems like a million pieces of paper... Just to get a radio, a tire, and a new passenger seat for my car... I don't care so much for the ball since I can just screw the rest of the broken part off and get a new one really cheap.. My boss thinks I care about the car more then the consumer which isn't true.. I care that she's destroying my car and doesn't care.. Her family called her destructo which I thought was mean at first but now I see why.. Everything she touches she destroys... This should be a fun day today :((

Sorry I had to vent before I went crazy and started to bawl my eyes out :( this has been a terrible way to start my day..

Edit because words are hard when your tired and stressed out :(

  • I should also add that because she has mental disabilities that any other information about her, even something as small as her name, is a violation of HIPPA however I can tell you all about the stuff she has broken... Which is a lot of stuff...

Oh my goodness. I would fill out the paperwork. Those things are not cheap replacements and you have a baby on the way that your money is going to be going to.

And your boss is dumb. Just because you're upset that someone broke something doesn't mean you don't care about them (if that were the case then I'm pretty sure everyone would win the poor mother award when their LO breaks something important and you get upset/punish them for it).

Is there any way her ride can assume she's there and stop long enough for you to bring her out?

They have had too many issues with her in the past which is why she has to be outside before they get there.. She has also broke a seat and caused the driver to get in an accident because she had an issue and was mad at one of the other residents in the vehicle and she grabbed the steering wheel and caused a really bad accident .. She has had lots of issues with rides in the past and I am going to fill out the paperwork because I called a dealer to see how much it would be to fix the seat because my normal mechanic doesn't know how to do that and they said over $700 for everything... The seat is fine thankfully but everything under it is just destroyed..
  • Wow.... Just wow. Being that overweight with mental disabilities is so sad and difficult. It's not like she can go out and get a job in walking distance. :(

Next time tell your boss you're using his/her car to transport. See how much s/he cares then...

That is an excellent idea.. I'm sure he won't like it so much when she destroys his car too..

Especially since she has certain things that she has to follow due to her individual behavior and just her daily activity plans she has to go to a certain day program that isn't exactly close by so she will always have to have some type of ride..
  • Will your car insurance help with any of the costs? I think I would be making her sit in the back with her history :). I used to work with adults and children with disabilities, seriously one of my best jobs I ever had, loved it! Unfortuney it didn't pay worth crap!

That sounds awful :( I'm glad you're filling out the paperwork, though.

Side note, that part about her grabbing another driver's steering wheel and causing a bad accident is scary. I hope you're not in any danger giving her rides. I understand it's your job and she is handicapped, but that doesn't mean you should have to be put in a dangerous situation.

If she has anymore incidents like this the company is going to drop her from what I have heard down the grapevine because of her doing that and causing the company to have to pay for a new van and hospital bills for the company that gives her rides.. And I called insurance and they are going to help pay for the seat but they are only paying a little less then half.. But she also has faked serious medical situations for attention from her family.. She came to our company from a nursing home and her family threatened to send her back recently.. I think that's just been fuel for all of her behaviors and to be honest I don't get paid enough to deal with all of her crap..

Well hopefully you don't have to deal with her for much longer, then! I have a friend who does similar work to yours, and I couldn't do it. Kudos to you for your patience!

First, fill out the paperwork! You don't need to spend your money on something she broke!!

Also can you make her sit in the back seat from now on? I would personally refuse to drive her anywhere. She could cause you to crash! What if you or your baby got hurt! Good luck mama! I agree with some above poster that if you have to drive her, use a company car!
  • Definitely fill out paperwork. As PP Said if getting mad at someone because they broke something (especially something expensive)doesn't mean you don't care. If you did that means most parents don't care about there kids because they tend to break stuff. I would talk to boss about your safety do to the previous wreck. I know your job is hard my mom work with children with disabilities and I know working with adults is 10x harder. Bless you for what you do.
  • I'm so glad I have a place where I can just go and vent to people and nobody think I'm crazy!! My mom works for the same company as me and she covered the house while the house lead was on vaca and she gave every staff that was in the house for those 2 weeks complete and uder hell.. It was a rough time and it's just continuing the cycle!!! It doesn't help that her family promises her stuff all the time and then doesn't do it and it just makes everything worst!!
  • Glad you are filling out the paperwork and sorry you had to go through this.

I don't know the details but it seems odd having employees give patients rides home in their personal vehicles. The company should have a van equipped to transport these patients. One where the patients cannot get near the driver or steering wheel. You could have gotten seriously hurt and your boss turned it around on you that you don't care about the patient. That would have pissed me off to no end.

Hope you are able to get your car fixed soon and definitely use the bosses from now on.

They want them to get to their assigned day program location no matter how they get there is the point in the end.. And since the driver doesn't want to deal with her when she will take forever and make them all late they basically choose not to deal with her unless she's ready.. Best believe this morning her butt will be outside!!! I had to use our back up car to get to work today... She will not fit a Honda del sol.. And if she broke something in the car my husband would go batty!! That's like his other kid.. Therefor regardless she will be waiting outside this morning!!!! And I found out since it's a private company run by some guy and his brother they can unfortunately if a consumer is going to make them late if that consumer isn't ready.. Especially since she takes forever on purpose..
