FTM here. I get mixed answers about how much clothes I need. Most baby registry lists say something like 6-8 onesies. Someone donated me 14 NB onesies, and I bragged to my BFF and she huffed and said, that's not even close to enough. You'll go through them in 3 days. When I showed the pile to my mom, she was like, woah that's way too many. You don't need all that!
So I keep getting these extreme responses that I either don't have nearly enough or that I have too much. I am also getting other sizes, but not as stocked up yet.
What has been your experience?
Thanks
Re: Baby Clothes - Asking Moms
IMO, 14 is more than plenty to start out with unless you never plan to do laundry! If you have a baby that spits up a lot or you are just having a hard time keeping up with laundry, you can buy more. I found that I was having to change my clothes almost as much as the baby so we were doing laundry on a very regular schedule. For baby, I only changed his outfit when he was dirty, which meant that sometimes he went through a few outfits a day and sometimes he wore the same outfit 2 days in a row!
I don't find what we have necessary, but I have no idea what is!
I have been given the impression that ill need more footed sleepers and gowns more than anything. How many of those would you get in each size? I have like 2-3 newborn and maybe 4-5 0-3 month size.
Also, a related word of advice: dress them in your favorite outfits all the time. If you save the favorites for special occasions they hardly get to wear them since each stage/size goes by so fast!
I think if I pick up a few more I will get 0-3 month size. I'm not too worried about newborn size because having GD, I don't really anticipate having a baby that will be in newborn size very long...and if she is, I can always pick up a couple when she's born.

As far as sizing, don't go overboard on NB or 0-3 month size (read the weight guidelines on the tags as these vary). Most babies won't be in NB very long, so I'd stock up on 3-6 month size over anything much smaller. Though it doesn't hurt to have some 0-3; my 7 lb 11 oz boy didn't outgrow that size till 3 months.
Carter's and OskKosh tend to run smaller, as do their brands for Walmart and Target. The Children's Place runs a bit bigger, as does Macy's First Impressions brand. So what fits when might vary some.
With my son (Dec 2012), outside of a few outfits to meet people he wore mostly white onsies and pajamas. Since it was winter even if we did go out he would have on a bundler or snowsuit so no one saw how cute he was dresses anyway. He didn't start "wearing" clothes until maybe the spring (3 months) when you could actually see them and he didn't just lay there lol. As far as sizes I would skip newborn bc unless baby is born small 0-3 is sufficient and lasts longer. I had about 2 weeks worth (14) of onsies, footed pjs, socks and leggings bc i refused to wash laundry every day. And if I needed something between online shopping and hubby I was covered :-)

Elizabeth is 6
Katherine is 18 months
I would pick up more nb. Don't wash it if you have a big long baby so you can return it.
This time, I'm a little more cautious. I'm waiting till my growth scan to find out if DS will be bigger before washing any of the NB onesies I have, but I have about 3 sleepers and 8 onesies in NB and everything else is 0-3.
I definitely think I need more. Fortunately, Amazon and Carters both ship quickly, so i can always order more once he's born.
As for styles of clothing, gowns and sleepers were what DD lived in for the first 4-5 months unless we went out somewhere. Especially considering the cool weather.
