Induced early for high BP

hello everyone,

I went for a follow up appointment, my Bp has been high during my past two appointments so my doctor has been monitoring me weekly. Because this is the third time I've had high Bp she diagnosed me with gestational hypertension (I was tested for preeclampsia and GD and both were negative). Doc said we'll schedule my induction date when I'm 31/32 weeks, it's too early now to schedule it. She said I'll probably deliver around 38 weeks if my Bp remains where it is (it's not high enough for me to be medicated at this point). Have any other moms experienced this?

Re: Induced early for high BP

  • Why do they need to induce you ? What are the risks for the baby ?

  • Yes I was induced with my first at 37 1/2 weeks for high blood pressure- it was fine then suddenly spiked around that time and they admitted me to the hospital. Labor was longer than I would have likes but I delivered vaginally no complications. Baby & I were fine & left the hospital on time :)
  • I was induced at 36 weeks with my first, my PIH turned into preeclampsia. My blood pressure recently shot up this time too, they started me on Bp meds and I have frequent biophysical profile ultrasounds (to make sure baby is still growing) and non stress tests twice a week. (I am 29 weeks)
  • I'm in a similar boat. We talked about it yesterday. She said that they will keep me pregnant as long as possible but that I should be ready to go at 37 weeks. I start non-stress tests weekly in 2 weeks. Just hoping I can make it a tad bit longer. Sticking with my prenatal yoga and walking to try to help keep the bp down, but I know there is only so much I can control.
  • Hi! I have high blood pressure to. Before pregnancy as well. I'm currently on two pills of lebatol a day. I'm 30 weeks tomorrow. My blood pressure has been really good so far. I've already started the fetal stress tests once a week. But~~. She already told me if it goes up she will be inducing me anywhere from 37 weeks on..... I'm hoping it stays down for me as well as all of you!!!!
  • My SIL was at high risk for preeclampsia due to high blood pressure and hypertension and they induced at 38 weeks. I agree with PP's. They want to monitor you and keep you and the baby safe and it definitely sounds like your doctors have a good handle on the situation. Best of luck to you and to baby! Keep us posted.
  • Thanks everyone!!!!

I had to do this with my first, everything was pretty smooth and I was glad for the doctors concern.
  • I had pregnancy induced HBP last pregnancy. I went on home bed rest at 35 weeks and kept it so low I was able to make it to 41 weeks. Never developed any complications.

I would tell your doctor you want to wait and see how things progress. For me, eliminating work stress and staying off my feet kept it very low and I had no issues.
You can also ask about taking meds. I have asked that if it goes up this time we try meds before bed rest. My midwife has agreed. Luckily it is staying very low.

One thing that helped is buying my own BP cuff and taking it at home a few times a day. I bring a log in to every appointment. It helped me avoid early induction last time.
Also this time I was diagnosed with GD and the diet has really dropped my BP. I would highly recommend trying a lower carb higher protein diet. Look up the Brewer's diet- it's for high BP. I don't go that far because it's extreme. But just cutting sugar and some carbs and eating more protein than normal has dropped my BP about 10 points on top and bottom in a month.
