Weight loss in 2nd & 3rd trimester??

I'm not sure if I should be concerned. Looking for your opinions. I'm 27 weeks pregnant now, almost to 3rd trimester. In my 1st trimester I lost 15+ lbs to due MS and not wanting to eat. I slowly gained it back and Was on the right track. I got on the scale this morning expecting to see a number that would make me cringe, but I've actually lost weight. Is this normal? Have you experienced this?

I should say that in my 1st trimester I was hospitalized with blood clots in my lungs and have yet to be released to go back to work. So although I am slightly active, definitely not as active as I once was. (Adding to me thinking I would gain more weight). Last night I also had annoying cramps for a couple of hours.
Bright side: Through all of last night and this morning, baby boy is still kicking away.

From my understanding, it's okay if your weight fluctuates up and down throughout pregnancy, as long as it's not a sudden & severe weight change. As with any medical question, though, you should ask your doctor.

  • I am overweight, clinically obese, and I have only gained 1.8lbs. I'm 27 weeks. My CNM said that the baby is growing fine, I'm still growing, it's just that the baby can take what it needs from me instead of needing to ass on extra fat. It all depends on your body. If you're super concerned, bring it up with your OB/Midwife. :)

  • I would speak with your OB/midwife. Have you had your sugars tested yet? In AUS it's mandatory at 26weeks to have a glucose test. This can be one cause if weight loss along with other symptoms such as thirst, fatigue and increasing urination.
  • Thank you. Just wanted to hear others opinions.
  • I have done the glucose test and it was fine.
I have an appt next week also, just wanted/needed others opinion on the situation. Thanks

Without knowing your weight, height, medical history, etc, my opinion is ask your doctor! No one here can tell you if this is normal or a cause for concern.
  • I would talk to your doctor
I lost 15 lb in the first tri and an additional 5lb over the course of the 2nd tri. I still have some nausea which I think is the cause, my OB is not too worried since LO measurements have always been on track.

While waiting to hear back from my doctor, I posed the question simply to get the opinions/stories of other moms that may have gone through or are currently going through this same thing. Thanks.

Sorry to hear you are still dealing with nausea!! Hope you get relief soon!!!
  • Here's a good article from Livestrong about why some women lose weight in the 3rd trimester: https://www.livestrong.com/article/264954-weight-loss-in-the-last-trimester/

  • Thanks. I'll take a look. :)
  • I lost in the first trimester and then gained what I lost in the second and have maybe put on an additional few pounds. My belly is getting bigger but the scale hasn't budged in a few weeks. I'm guessing that I might reach my full term pregnancy weight from my first pregnancy but won't go over that this time. I'm nearly 32 weeks and still have 12 ish pounds to go until my highest ever weight.

I brought up my slow weight gain at my last appointment and he quickly compared to last time and said that there was nothing to talk about. Baby was growing and my weight gain or lack there of was not a concern.

  • Shan I am in a similar boat to you - I actually came on here this morning after stepping on the scale to see that I had lost another two pounds.  I started this pregnancy overweight (according to my BMI, but about 15 lbs over what I would consider my ideal weight).  In the first tri I had very bad morning sickness, and I think I lost about 10 lbs.  I slowly gained it back over the second tri, but over the last 5 weeks I have been pretty much maintaining or gaining/losing the same 1-2 lbs.  I'm currently +14 lbs, but since I lost weight at the beginning, really +4-5 lbs.

I too asked my OB about this, and he isn't concerned.  He did make sure to tell me to eat regularly, make good choices (protein, dairy, healthy fats), and that I need to eat more calories daily, but I find I get so FULL from small portions now.  I've been making lots of smoothies with protein powder, avocado, banana, and trying to eat whole grain bread with peanut butter, snacking on almonds etc.

It makes me feel like an ass posting on here about this, I've struggled with my weight my entire life and would not have guessed that I'd have trouble gaining/maintaining weight during pregnancy.  On a positive note, doc says baby is growing just fine (only one week behind at 32 weeks), and that she just takes what she needs from me.  Still disconcerting when I see my face, shoulders, back etc. thinning out as the pregnancy progresses.
