Breastfeeding in public

i have to mention this to you ladies!

I was getting my hair done today. Generally a 2-3 hour appt. I took the baby with me because my salon is small and welcomes it. And because I'm nursing. I'm not ashamed to nurse in public but I do try to cover myself etc. It was pretty busy in there today. There was this woman and her two adolescent aged kids with her. She commented on how cute my baby is. Then she turned to me and said good for you!! She continued and said I am so glad to see a mom nursing her child in a public place and not be ashamed of it or feeling apprehensive. She said people should never make moms feel this way for doing the most natural thing.

I thought that was really nice to hear for a change!!

Re: Breastfeeding in public

  • Love it! We're going on a short cruise between Thanksgiving and Christmas with the kids. I have no problems nursing in public (with a cover) here in the US. But I'm worried about how it will be perceived in the Bahamas

  • It's honestly a hassle to try and cover. It's hard! I don't have one that goes around my neck. And I feel like it makes it got under there for the baby!

  • Awesome! I use a cover and I don't mind it because it tunes out distractions for LO. At first, I was apprehensive but now I'll nurse basically anywhere and want to make a point of it. :) Unfortunately, as I was nursing in a secluded part of the IKEA restaurant yesterday, WITH a cover, another mother came up to me and said "you know, they have a nursing room..."  I am sure she meant well and probably wanted to make me more comfortable, but I couldn't help but be sad she felt compelled to "help" me since I was doing just fine feeding kiddo under a cover.  On the other hand, a bunch of other parents sat across from me and gave me knowing smiles and nods, asked how old LO was, etc. so it was a good experience overall.

A mom I am friends with on FB posted about thisthe other day. Her husband was also commenting on her post about his strong feelings that mothers should never BF in public. She apparently agrees and they both went on further to say that they don't want their children exposed to it and don't allow their daughter (who is like 11 by the way) to watch her nurse her almost 2 yr old.

I thought that was really weird! I don't hide nursing from my other kids. I don't even know how you would do that all living under one roof.

Then her husband gets irritated at the negative comments he received. I thought well you had to know posting about nursing on FB would receive a lot of comments. Helloooo.

I was joking and commented and said I don't usually comment on posts like this because I'm too busy nursing my baby in public. Lol.

    Geesh. Craziness.

Do you think she said it in a criticizing way? Or maybe she was just sharing that IKEA as a store is so awesome and supports moms and has a special room for them? Hard to know what tone this was delivered in by just reading here. When I was BFijg my first I tried the cover and she HATED IT. had a fit every time I tried using it. So I started nursing without it. Everywhere. In a restaurant, at a park, on top of a glacier in Europe. Meh, who care what people think. Nobody even batted an eye at it. Honestly I felt more judgment from people any time I pulled out a bottle to feed her, a bottle of BM, rather than when I nursed out in the open. People will always judge you for something....
  • @harmonicababe26 no, exactly, she wasn't judging me but she thought I'd be more comfortable in a nursing room (which is also a changing room, thus smells like a bathroom, thus is actually not a pleasant place to sit and nurse).  I think she meant well, it's just too bad nursing in public is even noticed, to be honest.

Can't believe your friend and her husband. What's the big deal?

And indeed... people will always judge you for something. But then that's their problem, not ours! :D
  • Right??!' Her husband was like I don't allow her to nurse in public. Lol okey doke. I thought well you must have to pump a lot or never leave the house. I really have no apprehension about nursing in public. If my baby is hungry, I'm going to feed him. Anywhere.

  • @supersarah77

Oh my! Do you know where that is from? I hope a dozen moms showed up at the establishment to simultaneously breastfeed without covers.

He doesn't ALLOW her?  WTH?  Sorry, that just struck a nerve with me.

It's funny.  Before I had my LO, I was kinda uncomfortable around women who BF.  Not sure why, I just was.  I mean, I had no problems with it at all; I just felt weird, like I shouldn't be there or something.  Anyway, that's all out the window now, lol.

Kudos to you moms for doing what is natural!!!

  • Yeah. I know. Struck a nerve with me too!! My husband isn't like that at all. When I told him about that fb post and their comments.. He was like yeah I dare someone to give you a hard time when I'm around. And I don't understand the point of hiding it from your children. I mean I don't offer up a boob to my 6 yr old but I don't hide it from them. I educate them about it. Answer their questions if they ask. Parent!
