High risk at 37w

I went to my 37 week appointment yesterday and the Dr decided to tell me that he believes that I am now high risk due to low platelet counts (have been monitoring them for the past month or so. Normal levels are around 150, I'm currently at 81. 70 is approaching dangerous levels and 60 is very dangerous). He has just handed me over to a specialist/high risk dr so that she can continue my care. This wouldn't be a big deal except for the fact that the new doctor is 2 HOURS AWAY!! And the hospital that I will be delivering at (which I have to go through the entire registration process and tour again.....) is also 2 HOURS AWAY!! I'm very nervous about going into labor and having my baby on the interstate or something.... Can anyone give any advice/ experience? I'm 3 weeks away from meeting my baby girl and kinda freaking out....

Re: High risk at 37w

  • I've never been in this situation, but 2 hours is really far, so I understand how nervous you are! Is there another high risk OB you can see that's closer? I wouldn't want to risk a 2 hours drive while in labor either. Another thing, did they tell you about epidurals and platelet count? Unfortunately they won't let you get an epidural if you have a low count, so I'd be prepared for that. Ask them about that and see what they say, they probably have a cut off limit. Good luck! I'd push to find a closer high risk OB.

  • I live 2 hours away from the big hospital. It's not fun to make that drive in labor, I delivered my #2 & #3 there. I made it in plenty of time and went as soon as we had timeable contractions. Good luck to you.
  • I second that with that platelet count you probably won't get an epidural at least not where I work (l&d nurse) especially with your history so if you haven't already I would start looking into some natural birthing techniques to prepare yourself and DH.
  • I have a low platelet count, too! Hooray for us! Mine is not as low as yours, but we check it again next week. My last check was my GD test - mine have been low and dropping since the beginning, and were low with baby #1. With #1 they did let me have an epidural because I was above the cut off that day (they will check your levels when you get to the hospital). It sucks they are sending you so far away, but we don't have a specialist in the state so they are just going to handle it themselves for me! Even though it is a hassle, at least you know baby will receive the best care! Also, if you have a fast/emergency style labor, I would ask what would happen in the event you felt you could not make it to the further hospital - would the local one turn you away? Transport you there? It's worth asking, considering the distance!

  • Also ask if they plan to induce. A lot of time with high risk pregnancy they like to control everything. So they would rather induce you at 38 or 39 weeks then let you go naturally. So if your induced you will be fine to drive that far for your scheduled induction.
  • Thank you ladies so much! I went to the high risk doctor today and it looks like I will be delivering our baby girl next Thursday! It has eased my worry quite a bit since I know I'll have time to get there. As of right now they will let me have an epidural however, I am preparing to just have her naturally. We are very excited, yet still a little nervous, and can't wait for next Thursday!
  • Awesome news! I know you can't wait to meet your LO!! :) good luck momma!
