Pads for postpartum: specific recommendations

(I would post this in the postpartum supplies thread, but I couldn't find it and the search function isn't working for me.)

BTDT moms, a few questions about pads:
1) For the first week or so when blood fliw should be heaviest, should I spend a bit more for Always Infinity (thin and extra absorbent), or just go with a Always Thin Overnight? (I prefer to use the thin pads rather than the maxi ones - really dislike having a thick pad rub all around).

2) How many pads did you use per day for the first week or so? How many per day after that, and for how many weeks? (I want to stock up before I deliver so I don't have to send someone out to get them, but I don't want to get too many of the overnights because my periods aren't that heavy.)

    I seriously bought depends. After you give birth the thick pad are nice cause they give you extra cushion. I'm a ftm and I heard the first few days after birth you get big gushes of blood. Also pads don't really stay in place when you sleep. So depends was recommended by a few moms and at least if you leak you can just toss them. After the heavy days I will just use always infinity.

    The hospital will give you giant ones for the first few days, from what I understand. They are pretty much like depends. I've been told to steal/take as many as they will give you. 

    Other than that, I've heard Always infinity is good, the overnight kind for heavy flow.

    Other advice I've gotten is to have a variety to work your way down as it starts to taper off, so don't just load up on the super heavy flow ones. After a few days to a week, it should slow down, so it's good to have different types on hand as you go.

    @MandahGirly. I bought the depends silhouettes and tried them on, of course I laughed my head off but they are pretty comfy and have nice protection from front to back. I feel like I won't have any leaks plus you can just toss, pad have to be secured either by the mesh undies or ur regular undies. :))

    Always Infiniti are great. The flow is only heavy for a few days then there may be gushes of blood, esp when nursing and I would just have to change the pad right after. I don't like bulky, thick pads. Buy several packages because I did go through a lot the first several weeks until I could step down to panty liners.

    I have always used always infinity after birth,and they work great.Hospital will give you a bunch of pads and mesh panties..i hated them,the pads go from my crotch all the way up my butt ughh..so i pack granny panties and my always..bleeding is different with everyone.my first barely bled,second I think I went through 2 packs a week,my last one was about the same too 2 packs of pads a week for about first three weeks..so just get sticked up to be on safe side. Or send hubby out like I did last time when i ran out,he took a picture so he got the right thing :)

    I used the ones in the hospital for the time I was there. Didn't bother stealing any because they were about the size of a sheet of paper and as thick as a blanket. When I got home, just always overnights for the first few days (2 a day) and now just pantyliners. Seems to get a little heavier when I'm moving a lot or pumping.

    As a FTM, I expected it to be AWFUL. For me, it was like a regular period. No biggie.

    I am a FTM, but I bought a couple packages of Always Infinity, and I did buy one package of the super thick overnights just in case. I live 20 minutes from a grocery store and I didn't want to get caught not having what I needed.

    I bought teva pads for postpartum. They weren't super thick like hospital pads but they had better coverage than always.

    What about bleeding after a c section? I already know I'm having one and from what I understand I'll still bleed, but can anyone lend insight on how much?

    I've had two vaginal deliveries and it was actually pretty heavy for me for a while. I don't remember how many weeks, but it wasn't fun. Of course, baby is worth it though. :)

    I preferred the crazy big hospital pads, like someone mentioned, they're cushiony. Especially love the ice ones at first.

    I used always maxi overnight for my first and then the maxi thins once the bleeding was lighter.

    But the hospital will send you home with pads, a peri bottle and medicinal spray (for tears). You'll have everything you need really.

    I used Always Infinity when I was home from the hospital both times and plan to again. Never once had a leak issue

    When recovering from a previous MC, I used Always Maxi Extra Heavy Overnight. I am also a FTM, so I have no previous pregnancies to compare to, but I am expecting the bleeding to be about the same. I am buying a 2 weeks supply of those for this little guy. I will switch to a lighter pad during the day when I can. They are thick and have good coverage front to back, but they don't have the diaper feel of depends. Plus I found that I could wear them under pants and you couldn't tell that I was wearing them.

    I'm a FTM also and got the depends along with heavy flow maxi pads. My mom recommended the depends so I don't ruin all my panties.

    Used hospital pads while there and the handful they sent me home with. The switched to infinity for a week or so before liners for a couple weeks... It's really only bad the first few days and then just like a longer than normal period... Or at least it was for me. Like pp, it's not the most fun I ever had but it wasn't too big a deal and definitely easier than I expected :)

    I hated Always Infinity pads for post partem. I had an episiotomy and the plasticy lining stuck to the sore spots. I immediately switched to Kotex U (black box) all nighters. The lining was softer and felt better against my healing cuts.

    I 2nd the c-section question...I only just found out that I should expect heavy bleeding afterward but i have no idea how bad?

    I bought the kotex U because when I was a teen, the always broke me out down there. I've used the U tampons for years (yes I know, can't go back to tampons for a while) so I figured I would stick with the brand I trusted already. Not looking forward to the bleeding, but definitely looking forward to my little man being here.

    @Blinkbaby & @chris&haley I had a c-section with my first and from what I read on here (bleeding wise) all of the comments from people who have had a natural birth sound similar to my experience. I bled heavily while I was in the hospital and when I got home I wore the big hospital pads for a few days and then switched to a lighter pad because the bleeding started to get lighter. It wasn't bad, like PP it was similar to a heavy period. But I did have some blood clots which scared me because the nurses said if they were bigger than (I think they said a dime) than to call..at points I thought they were bigger than a time so I called but they said I was most likely fine but if it kept happening or got any bigger to call again, and they didn't (sorry if TMI). Hope this helps!

    As a FTM, I expected a crime scene, but it was more like a 5-week period for me. My periods are the first few days anyway, though.

    While in the hospital, I used the giant mattress-like pads and the mesh undies but I found both to be uncomfortable. At home, I used Always Infinity overnights and my granny maternity panties. I found that to be quite sufficient and never had any leaks.

    This time, I've bought a box each of Always Infinity Overnights, the regular heavy flow ones, and regular absorbency . . . I plan to use them with my same maternity panties, which I'll trash if they get stained. No mesh for me!

    I bought the stay free overnights, they are very reasonably priced, and I went through A LOT of them.  You want the extra long ones so that they cover front to back.

    Spin off question: will there be pain (cramping) like a period along with the heavy bleeding? If so, if I am breast feeding, will I be able to take ibuprofen?

    I haven't worn a pad since I was a teen but I do remember one trick - tight bike shorts to keep everything in place! I hate underwear that is too tight around the legs so I plan to stick with what's comfortable and wear my pregnancy capris to contain things rather than Depends.

    My sister gave me a great tip that her midwife told her! Take a HEAVY flow pad and get it wet so that it swells a little. Stick it in the freezer and use it as an ice pack for the first week! GENIOUS!
