Baby Registry - How Many Items?

Wondering how many items people have on their registries? I'm a FTM and my Babies'R'Us registry has 120 items on it.... which feels excessive! I've been over it a dozen times and I can't really find many things to cut though. I'm feeling nervous that people will think I'm asking for too much! Just wondering what the norm is?

Re: Baby Registry - How Many Items?

  • I have no idea but I'm glad you asked!  My BFF told me that I needed to put more things on it, but I don't want to look greedy or apply for things we do not need.  I'm looking forward to others' opinions!

  • I have less than 20 items on each of my two registries. I don't know what to add though. Lol I won't need clothing items but know that people will buy that anyways.
  • I have about 75 items on both of my registries - but this also includes small items like nursing pads, pacifiers, toys etc.
  • I might have 30 items on my registry, but I knew people would get clothes and stuff, so I didn't register for that kind of stuff. I also felt a little awkward registering for nursing pads, nipple cream, etc, so I will probably get that myself or my close friends /mom might purchase it for me!
  • I have 130 on my 2 registries (combined) I have a lot of little things...only a few big ticket expensive items. The checklist babies r us gives you is helpful and I remember them telling me to have 2-3 items per guest as a rule of thumb.
  • I think I have about 100 items total on my registry.

  • I have 30. Mostly little items like bottles and breastmilk storage, nursing pads, a couple clothing items, wipes, soap and lotion. I do have a pack and play and a second car seat on the list, but that is mainly for the discount we get if they aren't bought. We have all the furniture, cloth diapers and the breast pump already. We have a small townhouse and don't want it packed full. We're pretty minimalist.
  • About 110....but I'm also lucky enough to be having four showers

  • Last I checked we had about 45 or so items on ours.  We live in a small house, 900 sq ft, and so I don't want a lot of clutter.  Plus we are renting and hoping to buy a house in the next 18 months so I don't want any more stuff to move than necessary.  And DH and I both like keeping it more basic anyway.  I can't see the need for a doorway swing, exersaucer, play mat, walker, and multiple other similar items.  Back to the basics here and hoping to keep it that way.  Plus, by keeping it small we are hoping to get more of those items that we really need.
  • If you go to babylistregistry.com they have a quiz that you can take and then it generates a personalized list for you to go off of. I really like them because they are designed so you can add things from any website all in one place. Obviously you already did yours, but I like the concept because that means they have to reason to tell you anything excessive or try to sell you on things you don't need. I would say having that many items just means that there will be a good price range so your guests will be able to find something they are comfortable with. Maybe take the quiz and see if maybe you asked for anything that isn't really necessary? For instance, my step mom said mine was small, but people have already bought him sooooooooo much clothes, so I just left those kinds of things off all together. I also didn't ask for diapers or wipes because we are doing a diaper raffle at our shower, and I figured wipes are relatively inexpensive so we can get them ourselves. Hope this helps, I'm sure you'll get everything you need for baby :)
  • I have a lot! This kid needs a lot of things. I've also been buying some items that are higher priced or that I really want with various coupons from various online sites.
  • Such as a second feeding pillow. Wanted one for upstairs and downstairs. Neighbor had s fussy baby and I took it out. Instantly calmed her and she's going to get the same one for downstairs. But I registered for 1 Bc I know what you mean with feeling like asking a lot. FYI it's the nook niche feeding pillow :) ((neighbor has the boppy))
  • When I registered at Buy Buy Baby they recommended 140 items! That seemed a quite high to me. DH and myself were in the financial position to buy a lot of things since we found out we were expecting so all the baby furniture and decor has been taken care of, we bought the infant seat and compatible stroller months ago, mamaroo, breast pump, diapers from newborn through size 3, clothing through 18 months (I am very particular and don't like frilly or cutesy things), etc.
So, the biggest ticket item on our registry is the Uppababy G-Luxe and we only put that on there when we use the completion discount! I did not include any "mama care" items like nipple pads or any care items for myself nor any diaper clean-up or cream type stuff!!!
We wound up with around 90 items and every week I buy several items because our shower will be small and I'm really using the registry mainly as a way to keep track of what I'd like. Of course I'm buying the items myself first that I feel people would be least likely to want to buy as a shower gift.
I think it's just important to have a wide range of price points and really dependent on if you're going to have more than one shower. It doesn't do any harm to add whatever you think you'll need. Just because you have a lot on the registry doesn't mean you are expecting it all; it just gives people more options who are gracious enough to buy a gift.
  • I have about 85 by the time my invites go out I'll have around 100. The list is mainly for me to keep track of things and also get my completion discount. I will definitely be adding it
    All in.

  • I have about 100 things on all the registries combined, but remember.... A lot of places will give you a discount if you buy stuff yourself to "complete the registry", so I was advised by my mom friends to add stuff for me too, like nursing bras and camis.
  • I think a lot depends on your financial situation, space situation your shower situations and completion discounts. If you have the space and are having a bigger shower register for more. If you are limited on space only register for the things you will need for the first year (i.e. skip the potty chair etc.). If your budget is really tight register for bigger items earlier (my brother had a tight budget and so grandparents purchased a lot of the big stuff that were necessities, my Dad will not buy as much for me since I am blessed to be able to afford it myself).

I personally have a budget when I shop someone else's registry so if the main item I choose to purchase doesn't hit the price point I planned. I throw in the onsies or pacifier types of things. If none of the little but necessary things are purchased I will often buy most of them in a section (so I often purchase 3-6 items for a budget of $20-50--depending on the relationship).

On my registry I put some classic kids books. But otherwise I have really only registered for first 6 months types of smaller items and I have "bookmared" my research on big purchases like strollers, pack and plays etc. At this point I have a private amazon registry so I am not concerned about how many big items are on it because only DH and I can see it. I'd say that if we don't get it on the registry I will probably only buy 10-25% of the little things that the registry checklist suggests (I am pretty sure our regular dish rack will dry baby stuff too and that our nice towels can dry babies--as cute as the hooded ones are).

When we registered for our wedding our registry expert (the person at bed, bath and beyond who helps you). Said to make sure you register for things like picture frames because someone will buy it either way at least get one you like, or if you really don't want it at least you know where to return it too, and get the registry grace period for returns! So, I have taken the same approach with the baby registry for the little things the checklist says I need, I picked one that I like even if I am not sure it is necessary enough to purchase myself (nice to haves). I am still on the fence with the short term use expensive stuff you usually borrow or get from friends (like swings, exersaucers, walkers etc.) I know some babies love them a lot for 3-6 months but I am not sure about the $75+ pricetag and space requirements--for something so short lived that LO might not even like!

I just ordered a basinet/travel crib/pack and play. I will also buy a carseat (obviously) and a carrier before LO arrives. I haven't decided on stollers and highchairs etc since most strollers require additional purchases to use before 6 months and it will be cold and icky weather in December so I may wait and buy a stroller when the weather improves and use the carrier for the first couple months (Or see if they have a black friday or cyber monday sale on the ones I want! Or I may make the highchair/stroller a christmas gift.).

I bought most of layette list for new babies (onsies, socks, etc.) at carters on sale for under $50 for 75% of the clothes you need to have (I only bought the basics pants, a hat and onsies/shirts, I still need socks and footed pajamas). I didn't even look at cute outfits because they still have mostly summer/early fall styles and people love to buy that kind of stuff. I bought one package of newborn onsies, everything suggested for 0-3 months, but might wait to buy 6 months until I am sure I like the clothes (if LO is to little for 0-3 month clothes we will go buy newborn sizes--but that would be unusual in my family). I am only buying 1 package of 2 types of pacifiers and bottles...I don't want tons until I know LO and I both like them!

  • I probably have about 150 total ... some of those are items that will be taken off before the registry goes out (just as reminders to me) so we'll probably end up with about 125.

I read somewhere that you should have about 5 items for each person attending your shower. This is because lots of people do combo gifts (a basket of things or a couple things that work as as set - ie bottle supplies, etc). And most registries count individual non-unique items ... meaning, if you put three 2.99 packs of hangers on there, that's three items. That's how my number got so high. I have some really small items that I put a couple of on there.

I wouldn't worry about having TOO much. People know that babies need stuff ... and they will buy what they're going to buy. I wouldn't have like 300 things ... but I also think having more than 20-30 items is nice so they have a variety.
  • I have about a 100 items on both of my registries, I wanted to make sure my guests had options to choose from depending on which store they decided to go with. Also the more items the more price ranges to help guests who can only afford to spend a certain amount.
  • I have 45 items on my registry but I am also not a FTM. I didn't register for clothing. Also didn't add personal items such as nipple cream, or nursing pads, or things that are exclusively for me. I also did not register for many large items since we had a lot. But on my very first registry, I probably had that much! It's actually good to have a good range of things for people to choose from when they are buying for you, gives them lots of options and price ranges! I wouldn't worry at all :)
  • I started a baby list registry one so that I can add from anywhere, I probably have about 100 items between several places. Like a PP, I am also lucky enough to be having four showers.

And also like another PP, I was concerned about seeming greedy so I was reluctant to add things to it, but then was told that just because it's on there it doesn't mean people have to buy it.

    Rainbow baby EDD 12/19/15
  • Just started our registry yesterday and astounded at how much this little dude (and mama) will need! But I am using it right now as more of a checklist and we will probably be getting a fair amount of clothes from hand-me-downs.
Keep in mind there are a lot of small items that people will group into a gift for you, and a big registry won't come off as greedy- people realize these days its almost just your running online shopping cart and makes it easier for you to pick up the stuff that wasn't gifted (because lets face it, family/friends will want to buy you the more fun stuff and pass on nipple pads and diaper genie refills!).
  • Yup 120 ish on 2 registries lots of variety
  • I tried to put things on that I think i really need and want. then once those are purchased (hopefully) I'll add some of the other items that would be nice as well.
