I'm 16 weeks today and am noticing my hips are starting to get wider. Is this the point in pregnancy when your pelvis and hips begin to do that for the baby? Is anyone else experiencing this at this point?
I'm 22 weeks, and haven't experienced it. But I think mines were already a little wider than "most". Maybe, if you have slim hips, then your hips will widen. But what do I know..
If they are widening, then it must be a good thing easier birth maybe..?
I think it varies from person to person and pregnancy to pregnancy. Mine are hurting already and I'm 17 weeks. I don't remember this w/ my 2nd until about early 3rd tri.
Im 16 weeks, first baby, and my hips are starting to widen as well. I can only get my jeans or shorts up to my buttcheecks, or all the way on and they wont button. Its normal for them to start widening now (i had to buy bigger underwear too) Our bodies are getting ready for birth and if you are like me my hips were not ready. I think its normal for me and my body type and diet but differs from women to women.
I have definitely noticed this! I was wondering if it was normal. I looked in the mirror and I could swear they looked wider. My belly also doesn't seem to be growing any and I think this is why - belly is kind of being stretched out because of my hips widening. My hips and joints around my hips have been super painful though so I'm thinking that is why now!
It is different in every pregnancy. And I have to have to say with my other four kids I had great pregnancies. With this one OMG, I have been on bed rest,I'm in pain a lot of the time with my hips. Which started opening at 18 weeks. I'm 24 weeks now and it has been painful not just for my hips but my back. I am grateful that I have such a loving husband because I don't think I could do this pregnancy my self. Everyday is painful and I have to limit my self on everything I do. I feel like I have been on my 3rd trimester since I was 18 weeks. So I wish you all the best and hope you feel better. I'm just wishing Christmas gets here faster, I don't want to be pregnant anymore lol.
@WendolynH : the same here...still working but I don't think I'll be able to do it much longer...it's so frustrating to be in pain all the time... I enjoyed my first pregnancy but this time around I can't wait not to be pregnant anymore... hope you feel soon better and wish you all the best too!!
@contourhands I wish "normal pants" we're like maternity pants. 'Oh I'm bloated today, who cares! My pants are elastic.' or 'Ate to much yesterday. It's all good, my pants don't judge, they just make room.' ;;)
Definitely further widening. I have had a lot of hip pain the past 7 or 8 days. Enough to wake me up and keep me in a half-daze for hours throughout the night. We added a feather topper to our bed, and I now wedge a pillow between my knees -- that provided a lot of relief.
My hips and butt widened with my first 2 and now it's happening again It takes work, but yes, mine did go back to pre-pregnancy size after a few months. I'm older now, so I am hoping I even have the energy to get rid of these hips after baby comes!

Tell me your secrets!
I was back in my pre pregnancy size 4 jean 3-4 months after having my first. I did a combination of running, palates, and yoga EVERYDAY. I feel palates and yoga really helped me heal physically and emotionally the most after having a baby.
I am not sure how hard it will be the second time around.
With my first, my hips didn't spread until well into my third trimester. With this one (#2), I was down 7# from MS and in maternity jeans at 9 weeks because my butt and hips spread almost overnight.
Question for STM's : did your hips go back after birth? Partially? Please say yes.
I've heard that binding the belly and hips during the first few weeks after birth can help them become slimmer, and that it's important to do the binding when relaxin is still in your system because afterwards they're kind of fixed in that wider position. I've never done any research to see if these claims are valid, but I guess it kind of makes sense. I like to wear a support garment around my midsection in the first few weeks after birth anyhow, to help with the jelly belly feeling.
Re: Hips widening
If they are widening, then it must be a good thing
It is so surreal feeling these changes happening!
