IUGR diagnosis

We recently went to see our MFM specialist where I had my first anatomy scan on baby girl. I was 22+3 and diagnosed with iugr. Our baby isn't growing like she should. She is only in the 3rd percentile. Drs are not confident that baby will make it to term. She told me to be prepared for a preemie and a long nicu stay. So scared.

  • So sorry. Will say prayers.
  • Are they doing any tests to determine what might be causing the issue?

  • Nik6499, because the baby was so small and she also wouldn't move, they were unable to see her face, heart and diaphragm. I have had every single genetic test imaginable and there's nothing wrong at all. The dr said it could be a conginetal anomaly that we can't see because of the baby not moving and her size or she could just be small. We are doing ultrasound every 2 weeks until week 30 and 2 times a week after that if I make if past that she said.
  • I'm so sorry!! Praying hard for you and LO. Stay strong hun!

  • Try to remember that you have no control over this and NOTHING you are doing is causing this! I beat myself up and felt horrible guilt for almost a year with my IUGR son before I accepted that his lack of growth inside me was out of my control. Expect to have non stress tests twice a week and really advocate for the baby to stay in as long as those tests are positive so the lungs can develop. Blessings to you all..... It is scary and the doctors usually aren't the most r

  • I had IUGR with my first lo. I was induced at 37 weeks and she was born healthy just small 5lbs 1oz. She had to stay in the hospital for 4days because she couldn't regulate her temp. But now she's 11 and very healthy and happy.
  • I'm sorry to hear this. My friend went through this last year. She was given a 50% chance that the baby would make it.  They were not able to determine a cause during pregnancy (genetic testing was all normal.)  She delivered at 34 weeks and baby was small.  A month or so in NICU, but doing great now at a year old.  After birth, they tested the placenta and found it had a trisomy.

Take care of yourself and have faith.

  • @ashleygrady20 there are a lot of other women at various stages in their pregnancy going through the same thing on the High Risk board. There is a lot of good information and women who are going through the same thing; just type "IUGR" in the search box. I'm sorry you are going through this; hopefully her growth percentile improves and it sounds likes you have doctors that are monitoring you very closely which is the best thing for you and your LO. Just know that it isn't something you can control and you're not to blame.
  • I'm in the same boat, baby girl was diagnosed at 20 weeks and has stayed below 5th percentile, plus she has a 2 vessel cord. They're not AS worried because my older daughter was also IUGR, but I'm getting weekly Doppler checks, growth ultrasounds every 3 weeks, and in 2 weeks I start twice a week NST and BPP. They can't find any abnormalities on ultrasound and she's a wiggly little thing so they're hoping she's just constitutionally small (I'm only 5 foot and my other daughter continued to follow her growth curve after birth instead of jumping percentiles like they'd expect with normal IUGR) I've been lurking on the high risk board as well. I'm hoping to get to 36-37 weeks and minimize or hopefully eliminate NICU time (both my others were 37 weekers and skipped any NICU time)

  • DS was diagnosed with IUGR at 28 weeks. They induced me at 35 weeks. He was about 4lbs at birth and spent a little over a week in the NICU, so he could grow, learn to eat and how to keep himself warm. You would never know that he was a preemie now. He is right on track with his peers, both developmentally and physically.
  • All of you who posted on here... Thanks! Even now that my son has been here a year, I still worry about him. He is meeting all milestones and is just so small.
