September 2015 Moms

What did you have done by 36 weeks?

I am due September 22nd and recently stopped working.  Now I have time to finish up things I need to for the baby's arrival.  Here is what is done:

The car seat is installed.
Crib is together and mattress (just need to put on mattress pad and sheet)
Breast pump and nursing tanks/bras are purchased
Pack and play and stroller are ready to go.
Pediatrician is set up.

To do:
Hospital bag is getting packed today
Washing babies clothes within a week or so.
Buy a swing and a rock and play for baby to sleep in
Register for cord blood banking

Am I on track?  Anything I am missing?  I was just thrilled when my husband put in the car seat because that is obviously essential!

Re: What did you have done by 36 weeks?

  • Sounds like you're ready to go! If you find yourself with extra time maybe make some freezer meals or just come up with meal ideas so you don't have to play the "what's for dinner" game. I've created a little binder with our meals in it and we resort to that when we can't figure out something.
  • Loading the player...
  • Yes, that is actually on my list!  I started making a chocolate zucchini bread that my husband loves, so I was going to make a couple to freeze.  I also plan on going through my freezer and tossing whatever is old or we won't use and getting some meals that will be easy for us.
  • Also, we live in an area where the grocery store and restaurants are very close, so my husband is able to go out and get food if we will need it.  I have a feeling he will be doing that often!
  • I would keep the car seat by the door and put it in the car when you're in labor because car accidents can happen at any time unfortunately.
Have you boiled pacifiers and bottles, if you're using them?
You also may want to wash a couple outfits in case baby comes sooner than expected.
  • I have not boiled pacifiers or bottles.  I plan on nursing exclusively for the first month because I took a breastfeeding class and she said it was best not to pump for the first month.  How long do I have to boil the pacifier for and then how to you keep it sealed after that?  I would assume it would collect germs..
  • I definitely will wash some outfits, is my regular detergent ok?  I know some people get the baby detergent or something free and clear.

A baby's skin is very sensitive, so I would recommend getting something dye and fragrance free. We buy the Kirkland Free & Clear at Costco in a big jug and use it for all our laundry (husband has sensitive skin, and this way we can use the same detergent for everything).
  • It depends on your preference for detergents. We use the tide or All free and clear.
Also my pacifiers I boiled for a good 3 mins or so, let them dry and then put them in a plastic container. Some people put them in plastic bags.
  • I only did 3 mins because they had already went through the dish washer, I think normal boiling time is 10 mins.
  • Utt oh. I hope this isn't the case for who you've decided to use but the cord blood bank I looked into had a cut off date of week 34 for registration. Check asap and good luck!
  • Sounds like you're on track! I have everything done except installing the bases for the car seat and boiling the nipples for bottles.

Also, I use Tide Free and Clear detergent.
  • Oh I hope the cut off isn't 34 weeks!  I will do that today then. My husband really wants to do the cord blood banking.
  • I'm 39 weeks tomorrow. We set up the PnP yesterday and did a trial run with the car seat. Then we uninstalled it again, not keeping it in there until I've delivered in case of an accident. The crib will be put together right before we need it, no need for it to collect dust (crib slats are a pain to dust, lol), same with bedding and most of the clothing. I'll rather it be freshly laundered. Bottles/pacis will be sterilized if needed and right before they are needed.

  • I'm in the same boat and I feel behind even though I know if he were to come now we would be fine. I've washed everything in the honest co. detergent. Still need to boil pacis and wash bottles (well, still need to buy bottles first) and just got my pump yesterday so need to figure it out. Still just need a lot of things (my shower is virtual and still taking place so I'm waiting to see if I get anything else from that before I buy) like changing pad, bath, play mat, glider, swaddles, toys, etc. So that's my biggest stress.

You will be fine mama, just do a little every day but take time to yourself to enjoy being pregnant and relax!
  • I too plan on exclusively breastfeeding but my lactation consultant also said it is good to have a couple bottles on hand ready to go because you never know how your body will take to breastfeeding. She had some mothers who really wanted to breastfeed right away but their bodies didn't cooperate right away and it took longer than usual for their supply to come in and they had to supplement with formula (rather than have baby go without). Just nice to have a back-up plan that you may not have to use...but since you have the time, it could offer some peace of mind.

  • I've washed all of her clothes. I just used the gain that we all use. I put her clothes in a storage box because we don't have her closet ready yet. I also cleaned the cradle that my granddaddy made. Her diaper bag was packed yesterday. Her car seat is still in the box, but that is easy to install.
  • Sounds like you are doing pretty well on prep before baby. I agree with a PP that said to keep the car seat by the door, in case of an accident you would have to get a whole new car seat, and that would suck. We still need more clothes and diapers, I haven't packed a bag for the hospital either. I am in a weird place between "I only have four weeks?!" and "It is still a whole 4 weeks away".

  • So I'm at 35 weeks and have done NOTHING except think about it but this is my second pregnancy so I've got most things in storage. Reading this post however has got me motivated to get my act together finally!

Glad I could help :)  I am a FTM so that is why I was worried!
  • I'm due same day and you are wayyyy more organised than I am well done lol :)
  • All I have left to do is sterilize the bottles and breast pump but I'm in no rush to even attempt it
