Nightly hip/leg aches

I've literally had 3 hours of sleep, I've been awake tossing and turning since 5 due to my hips and legs.. I've tried pillows in various places too... Then Ainsley starts getting wild closer to 6 keeping me awake along w the aches, THEN my belly starts growling.. So I'm now in my kitchen eating cocoa puffs feeling like a zombie. Any suggestions for the aches?! I'm almost 26 weeks I didn't think this stage would come until a bit later.

Re: Nightly hip/leg aches

  • Are you doing any sort of exercise or stretching? Maybe give that a try. I have been loving prenatal yoga in addition to my normal workout. For one I think I'm just so exhausted so it's easier to sleep, but I have a lot less muscle tightness.

  • I'm 25 weeks and for some reason my bed is sometimes the least comfortable place to sleep. Sometimes I move to the couch and have better luck there. I think if I'm leaving up against something like the back of the couch, that tends to help me feel more comfortable.
  • I got one of those memory foam toppers because I was having this issue. It really helped, I still get pain but not as bad.
  • I started sleeping on an air mattress. It's helped a lot with my hips and back. You just have to make sure there's enough air in it, otherwise you don't get the support you need. Also, make sure you use the right pillow. My first night I had the worst neck ache because my shoulders pushed the mattress down so my head was at a funny angle. As for the legs, I have restless leg syndrome and nothing seems to help that. I've had it for years, but pregnancy has made it much worse. I hope you find some relief!
  • My snoogle pillow gives me relief that no amount of pillow arrangements could.
    Maybe try a chiropractor too?
  • I totally understand! I'm also 26 weeks.. And bed time is not restful! I'm a back aleepwr and having to re train myself to sleep on my side or really propped up kills my legs and hips. I wake up through out the night in pain and shift from side to side. In have a full maternity pillow one that wraps around both sides and use pillows in between my legs. Nothing helps. I also have a brand new memory foam mattress that was super expensive. And my crappy love seat seems to be the most comfortable place to rest and take naps. I'll take any hints as well!!
  • I suggest taking a look at what type of shoes you are wearing during the day. Flip flops offer no support and make back pain worse at night(at least for me)
  • Eat bananas to help with the leg cramps, potassium is a lifesaver against charley horses which I get in my calf muscles in the middle of the night. I have been having trouble sleeping as well, I wake up every hour or two but I find I sleep better on nights that I get some exercise so you could try that. Body pillows are helpful as well. Only 14 or so more weeks, we got this!!
  • I'm glad I'm not alone this early on, I'll definitely be trying some of these. It isn't so much cramps as it is just aches, kinda like I've been lying for too long... But 3 hours into decent sleep I'm struggling to stay asleep because I'm tossing and turning and throwing pillows everywhere I can think of to get support. Also there's been a couple of nights my left back muscle was burning, completely on fire sensation. No idea why. But hopefully some of these help, thank you all!
  • Yup 26 weeks... same boat. You are not alone. Third trimester is creeping up on us!
  • I also have a Snoogle and it's been money in the bank as far as getting a good night's sleep. I have a tempur pedic bed but the Snoogle makes all the difference!
  • I am 23 weeks and my hips, lower back and legs kill me when I go to sleep. I've tried body pillows, pregnancy pillows, everything. I wake up with a leg that's asleep and throbbing hip pain. I wake up at least 4 times a night turning from side to side and moving my pillows with me. During the day I am totally fine. I'm guessing I'll never sleep through the night again from this point forward!
