Glucose Tolerance Test Results/Seeing an Endocrinologist

Hey ladies. I know there have been a lot of posts lately about the dreaded glucose tolerance test. But here's another one (sorry).

So here's the situation. I went for the my 1 hour screening and failed that. I went back for the 3 hour test on Monday. I just got a call from my OB's office today saying my levels were pretty high and that they are referring me to an endocrinologist and will call me back once they set something up. They really didn't give me any more specifics than that and since then of course I've had a lot of questions.

Am I to assume my levels were high enough that I have GD if I'm being referred to an endocrinologist? They didn't say the words GD, but I'm assuming you don't really see a specialist like that unless you have a condition...Anyone have any insight on this? I'm sure I'll hear back from the OB soon enough and can ask but until then it's a little stressful not really knowing what's going on...I know GD is pretty common and manageable so it's not the end of the world if I do have it, but it's more the not having all the pieces of information that is stressing me out right now.

  • I would call back for more info

  • I am planning on calling back tomorrow. I was hoping they would call me back by the end of the day today but no such luck...in the meantime I figured I'd see if anyone else saw an endrocrinologist during pregnancy and if they had GD or not.

  • That likely means you have it. They will teach you how to test and what to eat. You wouldn't be seeing an endo if they didn't want you to be testing your blood sugars and on the diet.
  • I got a call back today. They said my levels were high on two of the four blood draws so that means I have GD. So I'm seeing the endo on Monday afternoon.

They put you on a meal plan & basically teach you how to portion your carbs. While testing your levels 4 times a day. I went to see the endocrinologist on monday so I'm only 3 days in. Its exhausting, but hopefully i can lessen the testings. I go back in 2 weeks to check my progress. So far I'm within normal range. You can eat what you want, just watch your portions. Good luck!
