freaked out by ultrasound results vent

I'm a ftm and had my last ultrasound yesterday at 38 weeks, and was told my baby is in the 4th percentile and said she's only about 5 1/5 pounds then the ultrasound tech proceeded to tell me that my baby could be sick but she wasn't sure. Then after that said her heart looks normal and the blood flow from the umbilical cord to the baby is normal and looks good and that the fluid around the baby is good. So because she's small they sent me for a nts, results of that were fine and was told by everyone else including my ob that the baby is more than likely small because I'm so small myself, I'm 4'11" and weighed 98lbs before getting pregnant. Also that I will have to have a nts twice a week until she's here.

Those can be off by more than a pound..I'll be 38wks Friday and I went last week and they said baby is a little over 6lbs and would be a "healthy size" the tech also said his head was measuring a little big, so now all I see is a 10lb big headed baby! Why can't they just say everything's great have a good day!
  • Don't worry about what the tech says, and I can promise you that NST's are not bad, I find it cool because I lay there for 20 minutes just listening to my LO's heartbeat. If your dr isn't concerned I wouldn't be!
  • i have a friend that delivered at 37weeks almost 38 and she was so tiny! same as you about and her baby weighed also 5lbs when he was born he was totally fine just need to be bottle fed and breastfed cause he was 5lbs at birth other than that he was healthy and still is.
  • Those weights on the ultrasounds are not always correct. I had one yesterday and they said she was measuring right at 7 pounds. Then at my other dr today they said she was measuring at 6 pounds 6 ounces. So I take it as long as heart, lungs, and fluid levels are good then she is good. Don't worry about the weight.
  • I had this happen a couple weeks ago too. Basically my baby was in the 12th percentile and she said the dr may have to take my that day because she was too small!
I talked to the dr and the other ultrasound tech (at my next visit) about this. Basically what they said is they would do a repeat growth scan in two weeks. But as long as little one has grown some at the next growth scan they were happy. They don't start discussing any of the other stuff until baby is at around 3% and that is if there is no growth or issues with NST's which I was having done for other complications.
As PP have said, the NST are not that big of a deal you can hear baby's heartbeat so I find it relaxing.
I would say if you have to have more ultrasounds or growth scans, then see if there is another tech to scan you. My doctor has too so I scheduled next scan with her.
Also, my dr said the same things as well as said those scans are predictably unpredictable.
  • Wow! Ditto on what everyone else said! They aren't supposed to say anything that's the doctors job and the weight can be 1.5 pounds above or below! My aunts baby measured at 8.5 pounds.. They made her have a c section and my cousin was 6.11 pounds!!! Sounds crazy but it happens! Don't worry too much!
  • I was exactly the same with my first pregnancy. They thought that my son was going to be hardly 5 pounds and it was 7 pounds 11 ounces! That isn't right how the tech handled things. Mine don't really say much more than here is the kidney and this is the lobes of the brain. List to your OB and they'll keep a good eye on everything.

  • This makes me glad our Tech has only commented on LO's head of hair...(which you can see on an ultrasound?!?!?!)

Don't worry about it - your baby is petite :-)  My 5' cousin had a 6 lb baby. Said baby is just a small kiddo - she's 10 months old and is just now starting to wear 9 month clothes.

  • Thank you all for the advice and positive feedback it was all very helpful and made me feel so much better :)
  • This is such a hard thing to deal with. I'm the same but opposite - I am big, our baby is big and I've heard everything that could go wrong, which is really upsetting. I'm choosing to believe that it's the hospital's job to game out the worst case scenario but to believe I've grown a wonderful, healthy baby. You're small so it suits that your baby would be small - I'm big so suits that mine would be big.
  • The tech was very unprofessional and besides U/S are not that accurate I have heard they are usually 1-2 lbs. off.

  • I understand that its possible the US tech said something in an inappropriate way but one of the reasons that I never went to learn US after xray school is because they are responsible for results and are ones that diagnose as well. They are required to go to the radiologists and confer with them but they are very responsible for what they are seeing inside the womb or thyroid or what ever they are scanning. They are not just people who wave a wand around and take pictures/ measurements- they are responsible for much more; a responsibility I did not want to take on which is why I am just an xray tech still after 10 years lol. I agree with PPs that the size of a baby at this stage is very inaccurate. Please do not take my post as inflammatory or meant to raise anyones hackles- but I believe that the US tech was just speaking from experiences they have had within the obgyn world
  • My OB told me he wanted me to have a growth scan at 39 weeks if I hadn't gone into labor because I was measuring ahead. I told him I didn't want one just for this reason. As many of the women have stated (and a lot of research papers say) the scans can be off by +/- 1.5 lbs. I don't get why hospitals use scare tactics, we were built to give birth. Good luck to all of you and trust your bodies, they are amazing life giving machines :)
