9 lbs...SAY WHAT?!!???

I am 34 weeks, 1 day, today and had a growth scan.  About 3 weeks ago, they measured our little boy in the 70th percentile.  Today, he was measured in the 75th percentile at 6 lbs., 3 oz.  The doctor said, if I go full-term, he will be closer to 9 lbs.  EEK!  I have never gone full-term (I've never gotten this far actually) and cannot wrap my brain around birthing a 9 lb baby.

I do NOT want a C-section, but cannot imagine delivering a 9 lb baby.  I am freaking out!!

I may start jogging at 37 weeks, hoping things get started.  Feeling sick to my stomach.

  • Everyone I've ever known that is told they will have a 9 or 10 pound baby end up being 8 max. The scan estimates are often super far off.
  • They thought my first baby was going to be around 9lbs after numerous ultrasounds and he ended up being born at 7 lbs 15 oz 2 days before due date. :)

I was measuring at the 90th percentile at my 28 week appointment and am freaking out too about how big she's gonna be, but everyone I've spoke to actually says that bigger babies can be easier to give birth to because of their extra fat making them more squishy when they come out. Not sure I'm convinced though.

Also, I'm sure you weren't really serious but please don't try and 'get things started' at 37 weeks, baby isn't full term at that point :)
  • I agree that scans are largely inaccurate except in the early stages. My OB doesn't even quote size after the dating ultrasound for that reason. With that said, my son was 8 lb 7 oz at 41.5 weeks and I gave birth vaginally with only a second degree tear. It was not bad at all.

Those scans are almost never accurate. I'm personally greatful my OB doesn't do them (well I haven't ever been offered one.) More often than not the results freak the mom-to-be out.

Wait and see! I know of many moms who have delivered 9-10 lbs babies without issue. Obviously it isn't pleasant, but they were still able to without a C-section. Just gotta see what your body can handle first. Don't worry this early on, share your concerns with your doctor. :)
  • I was told my baby would be between 6-6.5 lbs, but she ended up over 9lbs. I hardly tore; they didn't want to call it even a 1st degree because I didn't "need" any stitches, the doc just did one for cosmetic reasons. I wouldn't stress about the scan, because they could be way off.
  • I gave birth vaginally to a 9 pound baby. So if the measurements are accurate, you can do it. Don't stress!
  • I agree your body can handle it! Don't worry about it. Plus who doesn't love a chubby baby!!! My last 2 were a little over 8 lbs and both times I only had 1-2 stitches and no problems pushing. You'll be fine :)
  • Ditto pp but I wouldn't worry. My first was 9 lb 1 Oz, vaginally, nearly med free (only had the epidural for breaking my water and pushing after 20 hours labor... But thank God I decided to get it) and 2nd degree tear... Which really wasn't a big deal. Baby #2 is on track to weigh the same as of my last appointment! You will be fine! :)

  • My brother-in-law was 11 lbs....delivered vaginally. So...yeah it can be done. I wouldn't worry.

Also, he was 2 weeks late so take that into account too lol
  • My daughter was 8pds 9 ounces you can do this. Trust me it sounds worse then it is.
  • As you can see, no need to put too much value in the estimates they give. I'm so happy to read you are doing well so far!

  • Not to get you nervous, but I was measured at 8.4lb a few days before my mom gave birth. I was born at 10.4 lb. whatever happens, your body will be able to handle it. My great grandmother gave birth to a 13.6 lb baby when medication wasn't used to help during birth. Don't get too nervous!! Congratulations!
  • During my first pregnancy, they told me DD would be about 6 or 7 lbs.  She was 5 lbs 15 oz.  Needless to say, whatever estimates they give me this time around, I sorta sweep under the rug.

  • You can do it! I was told my son would be 7 lbs max and he came out 9lbs14oz!!! Once your in the zone whether baby is 10lbs or 10oz it all feels the same. You just focus on the task at hand and get that little one out and into your arms

My first I was induced at 38 weeks because my Dr was estimating him to be over 10lbs by the time I would reach 40 weeks. He turned out to be almost 9lbs! It does happen :) I did push for 2 hrs and had a second degree tear that required 6 stitches but my second baby was easier. I'm hoping my third will be too, she's already measuring big...4lbs at 30 weeks!
  • I'm scared of a big baby myself! I was right on time coming in at 8lb 11oz, my husband 3 weeks early was 8lb 6oz!! I told my Dr. And she was like yikes! We're going to get a weight scan soon and may need to set up a C Section if baby is turning out like Dad!
  • You can do it!!!! My mother, wonderful woman that she is, never had a C-Section with any of my siblings or I and the smallest one of us was 9 lbs or 9 lbs 2 oz. Try not to think about it and as others have mentioned... they're never fully accurate. My friend was told her baby would be tiny and was a healthy 8+ lbs baby!
  • I had a 10# 14oz kid vaginally and I promise that my birth experience was not any different than any of the other moms I know (including degree of tearing). No need to freak out, size measurements are notoriously off.
  • My son was estimated to be 7.5-8 lbs and was born 9.7 lbs ... It can be off by +/- 2 lbs ... I wouldn't freak out. My labor was only 8.5 and he was my first !
  • My son was 9lbs 3oz delivered vaginally with a first degree tear. I was actually surprised he was so big but I had no complications pushing him out. I suspect my little girl will be big too but I'm not worried since I know my body can handle it. Try not to stress
  • I never had a scan with my first. My dd came out 8lbs 9oz! At 41weeks, I remember the doctors and nurses say,Wow she is a lot bigger then we thought." So I took that like I looked pretty good lol.
  • Thank you, all! I have another weight scan next week to see how big he is (again, knowing they may be off). Because I have a little extra amniotic fluid, they will be inducing me at 39 weeks. I am hoping because this is my 3rd labor (though I delivered very small babies), that my body will labor quickly and he will come out quickly. I really want to avoid a c-section.
