Mammogram anyone?

Hey mamas :)
So after I had my little one I noticed a little lump about the size of a pea underneath the skin of my left areola. It is pretty superficial...meaning you can see it pretty well just by looking at the breast. I called my ob office last week and made an appointment and went in this morning for my breast exam. After the exam he wanted to get a mammogram scheduled asap so I go for one at 8 tomorrow morning. The doctor said it could be something as small as a clogged duct or just a little cist, but he said it was better to be safe than sorry because in some cases what he thought was probably nothing turned out to be something. He said the lump definitely seemed to be attached to what was surrounding it and I initially thought I could roll it around slightly under the skin. I wish I could have got worked in today for my mammogram because all I have done is worry. He also said if it looked suspicious then I would immediately be referred to a surgeon and go from there. Even though I work in ICU and come from a medical family I am still pretty nervous which is natural I know. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I know every experience is different, but just curious as to what others may have gone through with this type of scare. Thanks ladies!

When I had DD I had a lump in my right breast and when I was engorged it was very evident but when I wasn't you could still feel it. I have breast cancer on both sides of my family (my dads mom and my own mom) and since my mom was young when she got it (45) and hers was hormone related I was pretty scared. My OB wasn't worried but I asked for a test anyway. They didn't do a mammogram because I was BF but they did an ultrasound and it turned out to be nothing. Keeping you in my t&p that you get the same result! Keep us updated!

A few years back I found a lump in my left breast. I saw a doctor and got an ultrasound, and though it looked pretty benign I chose to have a biopsy just to be sure (and to put DHs mind at ease - his mother died of breast cancer so he was more scared than I was). It all came back fine. There's lots of reasons for women to have lumps in their breasts other than cancer, and your lump is probably nothing serious. But definitely get it checked if only for the sake of reassurance- I know if I hadn't had gotten a biopsy done then it would have been weighing on my mind for a very long time.

I'm so sorry you have to deal with this. I've unfortunately have had a breast specialist/surgeon since I was 21 (I'm 32 now) so I get your concerns! The majority of lumps turn out not be anything but cysts or lipomas (fatty tissue). In my experience, when one is found, I normally have an ultrasound on it to determine what exactly it is. Then if there needs a biopsy it's usually with a fine needle aspiration. It sounds like your doctor is on top of it though. Mammograms are uncomfortable but it's over quickly! Keep us posted.

@LaurenAnn0405 My Mom also had breast cancer at 45. A few years back I noticed a lump and went in for an ultrasound. When I called my Dr office the Nurse was trying to explain how it could be a cyst or whatever. I cut her off and told her of my Moms breast cancer at 45. She immediately stopped talking and got me in the very next morning. At my hospital, the Radiologist views it right then and there and talks to you about it. It was nice to get an immediate answer. They had to do an ultrasound bc I guess when you are younger the breast tissue is more dense (?) and easier to read on an ultrasound.

Thank you ladies for your kind words!! Everything checked out just fine. I had an ultrasound first and the ultrasound tech showed the radiologist and he came in to look at it and said a mammogram wouldn't be necessary because it was a clogged duct. He told me to just f/u with my OB in 6 weeks and if I noticed any change then to call my doctor sooner than that, but he said not to worry. I am so glad it wasn't anything major...now this mama can rest easy :) thanks ladies!!

So glad it wasn't serious! Life got a lot scarier when I had my baby. I thought I would just be more scared for him, but suddenly our own lives seem more precious and important, too. Wishing you continued health. Your original post was admirably rational amid very normal fears - you rock, lady!
