The pediatrician we interviewed recommended waiting until 2 months for pictures instead of newborn - severe admiring her baby pics on her desk. She said they come out better at that point. Wondering if anyone has that plan too.
Around 10 days is what we are doing. That's when they are able to be moved and put into all those super cute poses and are super sleepy. When they are older you get cute pics but they aren't the same poses or styles. You can't pose them like you could with a sleepy newborn.
It depends on what you are looking for. We just did NB pics with DS #2 at exactly 1 week old. Our photog specializes in NB pics. I attached one she took of DS #1 - his was a special case because he was a preemie so he wasn't quite as fresh and squishy, but still tiny and sleepy.
By 2 months most photogs call them infant - so they are no longer newborns. We are doing newborn photos with someone who knows what they are doing and not out to make a quick dollar.
We did ours at 6 weeks, because I'd decided to skip them until a photographer friend of ours found out and came over to surprise me they're still adorable, but she was very awake, and not cooperative with the classic newborn poses. I'd do them sooner while they still sleep 90% of the time.
My niece is a photographer and she wants to do them at a week to 10 days. She said it is much easier when they are sleeping. We will take him to her studio. She gave us the session as a shower gift. I couldn't be happier.
We were gifted a newborn or family session and decided to do a family session instead of typical newborns photos. We are not huge fans of the super posey pics and we are more into the journalistic type photography. We are both in the wedding industry so we have fav photogs and whatnot and are pretty specific with our taste in photos. But if you want the typical newborn posey pics, they say between 1-2 weeks is best!
We're getting newborn photos within first week... Our photographer said it's easiest to pose them before 2 weeks. We're going to a studio that's only 10 minutes away... I'm nervous to take her out so soon (FTM), but everyone told me we'll want to get out of the house by then!

This is also what our photographer said. Ours is scheduled for a week to two weeks after the baby is born. We then plan on signing up for the 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month photography package.
I also had this question, so I asked my mom. She said "you get them done when the baby is a newborn, which means within a few days of him being born" so I'll be going with that. My hospital does them and I have no problem paying so I might as well.
We're planning on doing family photos around 2 months for Christmas cards and skipping a professional newborn shoot. We didn't want to do both so close together. We will be taking tons of pictures of the baby as a newborn, just not professional ones.
Do themmmm you'll regret not having them done. I usually photograph newborns between 5-7 days new, after the first week of life their reflexes set in and sometimes baby acne so it's best to do them early for the best outcome of photos
We waited until DD opened her eyes and smiled - around 2 weeks. The hospital pics looked so alien and weird, we didn't buy them. We're doing professional shots at 8 weeks
I have several photographer friends who always try to do pics before two weeks. Babies that little will pose easily and sleep a lot. They also don't have baby acne yet or cradle cap, both of which can take quite awhile to clear up. Plus they change so fast I love having the newborn pictures. I think with DD we did 10 days, 6 months and a year.
With dd we did the pics at the hospital and then did newborn pics. This time we will skip the hosp pics as they are way overpriced and not very good and just do newborn pics. Our photographer is amazing and I cherish Dd newborn pics so much. You won't regret having pics of that adorable new face.
I'm doing NB and hopefully some christmas pictures with my DD as well. By 2 months it's harder because they aren't sleeping so they are harder to pose and if they are awake they can spend the whole time screaming if they want too lol
I can't bring myself to spend $500 on pictures! Ands that's the low end apparently! My best friend had a professional camera and went to art school, so that's good enough for me! When little man comes home we'll do them ourselves!

Same here! We have a great camera and will obvs be snapping photos, which I feel will be more than enough documentation of the first days of his life. I know this opinion will be super unpopular but I don't love staged newborn photos like where the baby is balled up in a basket or sleeping on a shelf. I don't find them as cute as I guess most people do. Also, I agree with OPs doctor that professional baby pix taken a few months later make for better pictures.
The average price here is only 200$-300$, and that includes the DVD copy rights on all pictures. So, it's a one time fee! I'm paying $250 and this lady does epic work. I'm SO excited!! I'll use them In a birth announcement! I can't say I would pay 500$?!? That seems a little steep! Nothing wrong with a friend with a nice camera and some creativity!!
@PreggersinParis my husband feels the same way... He strongly dislikes those kinds of pictures, so trying to convince him we have to spend hundreds on them would be near impossible!
I'll be doing the ones the hospital offers at first and then a few weeks or month later I'll be doing them with a friend of mine who did my wedding photos. The more the merrier in my opinion!
My brother's really into photography stuff, so he's going to take some pictures when she's 1-2 weeks old. However, we'll wait to get professional pictures until closer to Christmas. She'll be adorable and we can get some cute family photos for the Christmas letter
@LaurenNewph Yeah, same here. My husband also doesn't really get them, he thinks they look unnatural. Also, these kinds of photo shoots don't really exist here. All of the French baby announcement cards we've received have been cute candids or sleeping photos taken by the parents (DIY!) that I think it would be super showy if we did, like, a whole shoot with props. They already think I'm over the top with the all the outfits baby already has, like his Halloween pumpkin costume!
