Vision Disruption

I'll preface this by saying I'm definitely calling my OB, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has dealt with this whether it be during this pregnancy or a previous one.

The last 4 days in a row for about 20 minutes I have "blind spots" in my vision. I can see enough to make out most things, but there's definitely changes in my vision, especially peripheral. It looks almost like I when you stare at something bright for too long and your eyes need a minute to adjust. My husband gets migraines and said it sounds like the "aura" he gets right before the headache starts but I don't have any headaches worse than the occasional one from being hungry or thirsty or just from being pregnant.

Anybody else?

Re: Vision Disruption

  • I find this happens to me if I don't drink enough, or right before I get a migraine. It's something I had before pregnancy though, so I'm used to it for the most part. I definitely think you should talk to your OB about it, but also try to keep yourself hydrated too.

Hmm, that also sounds like it could be an ocular (eye) migraine. I get them sometimes, with a little bit different symptoms than you, and I often have no associated pain. Typically I get wavy distortions in the periphery vision, almost like heat waves, and I feel unbalanced. It can last a short time or most of the day. My dad gets tunnel vision when he gets one. So specific symptoms can vary. You could read more about them online to see if it seems to fit your symptoms. Or call your doc for advice too.

  • I had this 1 week before DD was born. It started as the spots and then my words started slurring. ER thought it was a stroke but ended up being some sort of weird silent migraine thing that mimicks strokes. Terrifying!!!!
  • I have had this happen several times as well but only when pregnant. For me it has never been associated with a migraine or headache but it does make me feel dizzy/disoriented. Its actually what clued me in that I was pregnant this time around.

  • Wow I have never heard of this! It sounds so scary. I'm glad I read this though because now I know not to panic and think I'm dying if it were to happen
  • I get migraines with auras, but I also get weird spots in my vision if I stand up too fast or turn my head too sharply. My OB said it was probably mild inner ear problems, but it has definitely gotten worse with pregnancy. My mom says the only time she had visual auras like that was when she was pregnant. I think it has to do with increased blood flow and all the other crazy changes. Hopefully your OB will have more info!
  • Not attempting to scare you, but my midwife told me to always call with vision disruptions because it could be a sign of preeclampsia. My niece just had preeclampsia so I've had a lot of anxiety over it. She have me a list of symptoms to watch out for otherwise I would no clue.

I know they are common with migraines as stated above.
  • I've never had this but I did read that vision problems were a common symptom of pregnancy. Definitely call OB though just to be safe!
