Lip and tongue tie correction?

My LO is 4 weeks and I just found out she has both a lip tie and a tongue tie. I am breastfeeding, but the ties do not make it painful and she is still able to nurse. She is not gaining as much weight as she should- was 9lb 14oz at birth, now 10lb 1oz at 4 week check up. I am not sure if the ties are to blame for weight or not. Other than that, they don't seem to be causing issues. I am debating if I should have the ties clipped now to prevent future issues from coming up but don't want to put my baby through an unnecessary medical procedure if its not a problem. Any other moms dealt with this?

My second had a lip tie and we had no idea, he couldn't latch and he and I were both so frustrated during each feed that I ultimately threw in the towel on breast feeding him. None of his doctors bothered to look for a tie, and I had no idea about them. Anyways... By the time I realized he was lip tied he was almost 1 and it was time for him to switch to milk, so his doctors said I should just wait until he loses his baby teeth to have it corrected. --- along came baby number three and she too was lip tied, only I knew to look for it right away... We just had it clipped when she was 3 weeks old. The procedure took less than 20 seconds and she cried for about that long as well ( the tongue is the same procedure as well, although we didn't need that) -- for me it was worth it, not only because she can latch on better but also she won't need to do it later on in life ( and hopefully her teeth won't be effected like her older brothers)

Can I be jealous at no issues from them? DS and I have had a heck of a time! He had a lip tie and a posterior tongue tie. We saw a lactation consultant who spotted it and directed me to an ENT who diagnosed it. He gave us the option of having it clipped with the scissor-like instrument or a laser and we opted for laser. He had it done a day shy of 5 weeks old. It was hard to swaddle DS and hear him scream for the 1 minute it took for them to do it, but it was fast and he has been fine since. The first night I gave him Tylenol because we had to do stretches (still do) and I worried it hurt him.... but he doesn't mind the stretches at all, he's healing beautifully (no bleeding or anything) and nursing is getting less painful! (It takes time for them to learn how to use their loosened tongue.) What made the decision for us was not just my BFing pain but the connection that's been made between tongue ties and sleep apnea, as well as feeding (solid food) issues.

  • We're dealing with this too. I'm actually calling this morning to make an appt to get it clipped.

Go to www.drghaheri.com for lots of good info.
  • My LO had a tongue tie and we had it clipped when she was 6 days old. Took about 30 seconds and it was over. Very simple to do when they are really small. She still couldn't breast feed as she was premie and too small but it can cause speech problems later in some kids so I figured better to do it when it was simple rather than when older and needs anesthesia. She couldn't get her tongue past her gums so I'm sure it would have needed to be done later on.
  • My nephew has a tongue tie and his parents didn't correct it at birth . When he was a year old or so his teeth started getting bad because her dentist said the tongue can't reach to clean the teeth properly, he is now 6 and his teeth are in really bad shape. Also he has a lot of trouble speaking and trying to understand what he's saying sometimes is hard, he can't pronounce a lot of words and letters. None of my kids had it but if they did I would have had it fixed immediately
  • DS2 had a minor tongue tie.  I actually suspected as much because BFing was different than my other two.  I remember saying to DH that I had to have him in an absolute perfect position and latch or it was uncomfortable for me and I could tell he wasn't getting as much as he could/should.  The pedi in the hospital confirmed that he did indeed have a tongue tie she said it wasn't bad and he could move his tongue to appropriately BF, however she said she would clip it if I wanted her to.  I asked her to because as I said, I could tell a difference between BFing my first two and DS2.  The pedi said as far as they can tell it's not painful to have it clipped, I was there when they did it and really it was no big deal, though I don't know about lip ties.  It made a world of difference for both of us, I was able to BF without pain and I could hear DS taking big gulps all the time as opposed to before when sometimes I could hear it sometimes I could not.  For us it worked well, however, the pedi warned us that not all mothers notice a difference.
  • My son was tongue tied. He didn't have any problems eating so we didn't need correction (per the ped.)
Fast forward to when he was 3...he had to have tubes in his ears- the ENT suggested to clip while he was under anesthesia. He said that it to have it done as a baby is a simple procedure but when they get older it has to be done under anesthesia.
  • My daughter was born lip and tongue tied, had it fixed at 1 week old because they said it could cause a speech problem later on and she couldn't latch.
