"Smaller side of normal"

hi all! My OB office informed me that my 20-week US results looked good but the baby is on the "smaller side of normal" so we will have another US down the road to check in. I'm not too concerned (I am 5'2...perhaps it's a space issue lol) but my husband wanted me to ask "the girls on your pregnancy board" if anyone has had something similar :) FTM here so everything is new, thanks for your feedback!

Re: "Smaller side of normal"

  • Every mom, baby, and Pregnancy is different. If they aren't immediately concerned about the baby I wouldn't put much thought into it either. I was a small girl my first pregnancy. I was 5'6 and weighed 103lbs. I only gained belly and a total of 28lbs. My DD came out healthy as can be at 5lbs11oz18in. Tiny little thing, but my doctor said with my build I'd never make a big baby. :P Don't get concerned about stuff along the way unless your doctor seems worried by it. There is no point in stressing over things that cannot be changed anyway. Enjoy your pregnancy and hang tight for at least another 17wks. :)

Ultrasounds are notoriously bad at predicting fetal weight, and at this early stage soo much can change before delivery, that there is really and truly no need to be worried at all if your care provider is not. Small side of normal is still in the normal range! Hope you can feel better about it and enjoy the rest of the ride :)
  • One of my closest friends had a little girl who was just small the whole way through because my friend was small (5'2 like you and very petite overall, bone structure wise.)  Her dr was always a bit concerned, but her baby simply did not have the room (or likely, the genetics) to be bigger.  (Her husband is on the smaller side as well.)  She was born around 5 pounds but totally healthy and now she's a completely thriving 2 year old.  I wouldn't worry!  :)
  • I was on the smaller side of normal my whole 1st pregnancy my son was 5lbs15oz 20in. At 2 years old he's now average height although he still slender.
  • The smaller side of normal is still normal so I wouldn't worry about it :) especially if your doctor isn't worried.
  • Agree with PP, Normal is normal :p
  • I had my OB tell me the same thing, and as others have said my husband and I are both small people.

I worried all week once she told me that and when I went back for a second part of our scan made her reassure me that small still meant fine.

  • With my first, I was monitored until 7 months for being on the small side of normal. Everything with my ddbalways measures proportionate but they kept us going in and I loved seeing her every month. She was born 7lbs, when they said 5, and 21 inches. Perfectly healthy. Don't stress too much

  • Thanks for the positive messages everyone! Best wishes :)
  • DD was measuring a couple weeks behind all the way up to the last couple weeks when they measured my fundal height. She came out average at 7.5 lbs - I'm 5'3.
If your doctors see a reason to be concerned they will definitely let you know.
  • I am with you, girl. Brains were all good but rest of body was smaller than average. I am 5"3 so I can't expect much. I also have known many ladies to have healthy babies that were small.
