Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Baby doesn't burp.

My baby does not burp after feedings. I am breastfeeding, and I typically do 15-20 per breast. I try to burp in between and after each feeding. My boy isn't burping, but pooping instead. It is pretty much a given that when I burp him he will have a bowel movement. I am trying to gauge if he is passing gas and it just comes out, and if this is okay. I have a ped. appointment on Friday, but I am wondering if anyone else's baby poops instead of burps?!

Re: Baby doesn't burp.

  • Yeah, my little girl really didn't burp until 4 or 5 weeks. She did poop a lot too. And fart.

Just keep trying... and try making sure his belly is pressed up against you so you're pushing the gas from both sides.

  • My son is the same way at 3 weeks. I breastfeed him and he has only burped maybe a handful of times but everytime he is eating he will poop. I asked a lactation specialist and she said that is common. Babies are able to have a better latch around your breast than a bottle which keeps out a lot of air. I think as they get older they will start to burp more.
  • Breastfed babies don't burp as much as bottle fed babies do cause they don't take in as much air as they would with a bottle. Also when the baby breastfeed they typically poop most of the time. I noticed that whenever I breastfeed my baby vs bottle feed he typically burps more with the bottle then when I breast feed him and he actually farts alot more than burps anyway.
