Embarrassed to ask but... Red, hot, itchy breasts

Everything I have read says that itchy breasts are normal since they are growing, changing and stretching. I totally understand this concept. But in the last week or two my breasts itch so bad it's painful to have a bra on. When I take my bra off I feel somewhat relived but they just itch so bad, and are red almost like a sunburn. No rash, just looks like a sunburn. Also, they are hot to the touch. I'm not sure if I should wait for my next appointment or call the dr. I'm afraid they'll dismiss it as just the normal itchy boob thing and I'm concerned for the red and hotness. Also, I was using Palmers Cocoa Butter everyday now I'm using Burts Bees Mama Bee Belly Butter everyday. Nothing soothes them though. Has anyone else has this experience? Should I be concerned?

  • I think it may be in the normal range.. Hopefully it gets better. Mine we so sore and now they are better... Just way bigger!!!

  • Maybe try aloe or anti-itch topical creams? Good luck. Call your doctor if you can't get relief over the counter.

  • Mine are so much bigger too! They are extremely heavy!
  • Thanks! I'm actually going to try not to wear a bra a few days just to see if maybe my bra is too tight and irritating me bc at night it does seem to get a little better after taking off my bra. If not then I am definitely calling doc
  • If I wear one of my real bras for too long my boobs get really itchy and painful. I have switched to stretchy sports bras and they are wonderful. I can still only wear them for a certain amount of time though, my boobs need to be free! I've been using Johnson & Johnson baby lotion for the itching and it's working well for me so far.
  • My boobs and rib cage are over real bras. I have one coobie from my last pregnancy and I ordered 3 more. It is pretty much all I can wear
  • It might be the body butter. I used Palmers body bitter lotion during the summer and fall last te I was pregnant then switched to the thick cream for winter. After using it for a week my entire belly was bright red and itched like I had poison ivy! Wearing clothes was so painful. I thought it might be the Palmers body butter so I stopped using it and switched to a body butter from whole foods that you have to microwave to soften. The redness and itching slowly went away over about a week. Oatmeal baths helped with the itching too. Apparently ds didn't like it! To this day he still has very sensitive skin but the body butter doesn't bother me anymore!

It's crazy how much our body chemistry changes while pregnant. I'd recommend switching lotions to see if that is the culprit.
  • I bought some bras that are lined with almost a satin material and that made it a little more bearable.. but yeah its normal. It comes and goes in spurts for me. Just leave them off whenever possible and opt for a lot of lotion and a silky material when you have to put one on. Regular cotton lights mine UP.
  • I completely forgot about the Coobie bras! I have two of those! I might try one of those today!
  • Although I don't want anyone to experience itching and pain, I'm glad to know its not only me. I had read on here where excessive itching and rashes could mean that there is a pregnancy complication and it scared me.
  • Honestly stick to something as plain and natural as possible, I use a jar of cold pressed organic coconut oil (it's solid and liquefies at body temp) and pure vitamin E oil, nothing else. I have very sensistive skin to begin with.

This is a great idea. Also make sure your clothing and bra allows for ventilation of your chest. Not saying you have to wear a muumuu, but maybe it is time to look into some looser blouses or maternity tops if you haven't already. 100% cotton bras are most comfortable for me.

Yes to ventilation! If I'm home I don't even wear a bra and if I have to I wear the Lane Bryant no wire cooling bras, heaven!
  • Thanks ladies! I will have to try the organic cold pressed coconut oil. I have had very sensitive skin as a baby (my moms said all the snaps on my onesies would give me a rash down my whole body) and if I wear nickel earrings then my ears get red hot and itchy. I came home from work yesterday and immediately removed my bra for the rest of the day. It made a big difference in the itching. I really like the Burts Bees Mama Belly Butter because it doesn't have a fragrance and is a good texture and I think it's organic but I def want to try the coconut oil.
  • It could also perhaps be a bit of sensitivity to your laundry detergent? Worth a try. Also, ice packs/cool flannels might be helpful!
