2nd Trimester

Impactation/constipation

has anyone experienced being impacted and what did you do to help?! I'm on a strict low fat diet which is high in fiber but I'm in zofran which I know causes constipation I take colace twice a day and drink lots of water and apple juice and today I was trying to go to the bathroom and couldn't pass stool at all and I thought maybe it was a hemroid at first but when I felt up there it was a hard stool which I tried to break up but it didn't help the rest pass.. It is one of the grossest and most uncomfortable things I have ever done and do not want to keep doing it does anyone have other suggestions to soften up the stool to help it pass ? I'm 26 weeks along and any suggestions will be greatly appreciated :)

Re: Impactation/constipation

  • Try some coconut oil (about 3 tablespoons a day) or olive oil. That can help grease the stools (sorry that sounds foul I know) so they can exit easier.

Also, position to eliminate stool is a big deal. Get a step-foot-stool & put your legs up so you are in a squatting position. This creates a straight line for the waste to exit.

Finally-- Vaseline. Get gloves (CVS or walgreens) and lubricate your anus to avoid tears, fissures or hemmroids. You can gently use a lubricated finger to help the harder stool pass.

Coconut milk (not water) is a natural stool stimulant. You can have some in the morning (with your coffee which can also help you poop) and by lunch/dinner you should have a successful event.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you so much ! I'm gonna try all of those things and hopefully it'll get things moving back to normal
  • No idea but kiwifruit & prunes seems to keep things moving
  • When this happened to me early in my pregnancy (talking nothing for 10 days) I used a few small fleet enemas over the course of a week. With an impaction you can't treat it like normal constipation because it simply isn't the same thing. At 26 weeks it is likely best done under advisement from your doctor, I was still in my first trimester. Good luck.
  • Have you tried drinking some coffee?
