I waited about a week. I was going stir crazy home alone with a husband who works 12 hour days, so I took baby to the grocery store once in awhile during my maternity leave.
My SIL stopped by Walmart and a restaurant to eat with her husband and baby on the way home from the hospital. But she's pretty crazy, I don't think I would've done that... (No offense to anyone who has - she's crazy for more than just that one reason!)
I took her out to a restaurant for a celebratory dinner with our extended family on Day 4. I was freaking out about it but my mom insisted that I needed to get used to being out and about with baby and I have to say she was right. I plan on doing the same with baby #2.
I didn't take my LO out for a while the first time around. I don't really plan on doing it this time either. I liked staying home with him and having people come and visit me. I'm sure after 3 weeks or so I'll start taking him out. I've told my work to not expect me there for at least a month. That building is so full of germs. Ew.
With #1 we stopped and went grocery shopping on our way home. With #2 we took the kids to a breakfast with santa event when she was 4 days old (went more for my 2 yo son). With #3, we had a pedi appt 24hrs after getting home and went to lunch with the kids afterward...so we're one of the crazies that go out right away :-)
3 days old for a walk in the woods then a friend's party. Walmart a couple days later, Christmas Eve service at church at 1 week old. We didn't want to be housebound, and babywearing keeps strangers and their germs at an arms length.

My mom has given me the same advice. I plan to follow it. I know my own recovery (mentally) will be better if I don't feel housebound.
