Question to STMs regarding baby clothes.

Between hand me downs and new stuff I feel like I have way more than I need from 0-3m. However I'm a FTM and people keep making it sound like I'll need 100 onesies to survive.

Like between new and used I have 30 swaddle blankets, 100bibs, and 50-60 onesies.

I'm thinking of returning some of the new stuff and putting the money towards the big items we still need. Don't want to return stuff I need though.

Any thoughts? TIA

Re: Question to STMs regarding baby clothes.

  • In my experience, I found I did need and use way more than I thought I would, but it sounds like you probably have even more than that! I would probably take back some of the new stuff and use those funds to put towards your big stuff. While you will probably go through those things quickly, you will also probably be doing laundry a couple times a week. Or, I did, at least. Cause those baby clothes and blankets fill up the laundry basket quickly too!!

    Good luck!!

  • That sounds like too much to me. I know eveyrone is different but I hardly used bibs. Especially the first few weeks. I do laundry every 1-1 &1/2 weeks so 15-20 onesies was plenty for me. And the swaddlers don't get dirty very easily since I took them off while breastfeeding. I had 3-5 swaddlers. I would take some of what you have back.
  • Wow, I have two swaddlers in each size, a handful of bibs and a handful of onesies in each size. I didn't use any more than that with my first three. I'll just do laundry!

Wow that's a lot. I use maybe half a dozen swaddle style blankets and 1-2 thicker blankets (cover car seat in winter).

Maybe a 12 outfits/sleepers. I'm not a huge fan of onesies. Dressing a NB in a onesie or taking one off when they've had a blowout is not fun. I predominantly use sleepers.

I do laundry every single day but we have a big family and I cloth diaper. If this is your first you may want 18-20 outfits, if you don't want to launder every other day.

Bibs - I rarely use bibs. I have maybe five and will probably use just one occasionally when baby is older.

  • Like you, I now have tons of 0-3 months. I don't think she will ever be able to wear them all. Returning stuff to get the big stuff you need is a good idea.
  • That sounds like a ton! I didn't use bibs with my son at all until we started him on food and when he started drooling like crazy from teething. We used burp cloths when he was a newborn so I made sure to have plenty of those this time. I do like having a bunch of swaddle blankets because you can use them for more than just swaddling and it's nice to have extras to keep packed in bags and the car. It sounds like you have more than enough onesies. do you have a lot of sleepers? That's what I found the most need for because when they are so little, a cozy sleeper is easier than dressing the baby in a full outfit especially when you're just staying home. I made sure to get a few newborn sleepers and several 0-3 month so I won't have to constantly do laundry. I also love the sleeper gowns for bedtime. Maybe return some of your new things and put them towards bigger items or larger size clothes that the baby will need later.

Phew what a relief. I was really getting concerned thinking the baby was going to need all this stuff. It sounds like I have enough for triplets! Lol. And I forgot to mention that I'm still getting 2 other bags of handy me downs from a coworker on Monday plus other gifts from folks that couldn't make it to the shower but have txt me to tell me they have something for me. I guess this is a good problem to have and a blessing.

@nflan16 I have like 20+ sleepers up to 6m sizes.

@Taekarate1978 I hear ya. I hate returning stuff people took time to shop for and pick out but I'd hate for it to sit in a drawer when I still need big things for the little guy.

I concur with everyone else! If they won't give you money for the returns, see if you could at least exchange for larger sizes to keep in storage for later on! Also, an FYI, I bought swaddlers but my daughter absolutely REFUSED to be swaddled. If any are still news, see if baby takes to being swaddled before washing them! You might have more you can return!

  • Yes that is way more than enough- I'd say max you'd need 6-10 swaddle blankets (and even that is a bit much), unless you have a super spitty baby you won't need bibs until you intro food, we predominantly used burp rags with our infants so I would have 10-15 of those. As for onesies, depending on the temps of where you live you may not need many of these. It's still in the 80s here but I plan on putting baby mostly in cotton long sleeve sleepers since we'll be in cold air conditioning most the time.

I'd say a good amount of clothes would be:
    -7-10 onesies
    -10 cotton sleepers
    -5 cotton pants
    -7-10 pairs of socks
-10-15 burp cloths (cloth diaper inserts work best)
-5 cotton bibs (just in case)
    -2-3 cotton hats

This is #4 for me and if you have the above listed you'll be good and only need to do laundry about once a week (unless you have a baby who has lots of blowouts but even then you'd still be set for a good 5 days before running out. Hth!

  • Also I'd make sure you do have some newborn sized stuff. I had a 7 lb 1oz baby and an 8lb 1oz baby, both about 20-21" long and they both wore newborn for a good 3-4 weeks before transitioning to 0-3 month stuff.

The weight ranges on clothes are notoriously inaccurate and ime, the length of your baby has more to do with what size they wear than the weight. If you have a skinny long baby you could need the bigger sizes sooner or if you have a chubby but short baby you may be in smaller sizes longer than expected.

  • I have 10-12 sleepers and 15ish onesies and 5 pairs of pants that go with them...also bibs! I feel like they get ruined fast and you just toss them! So keep them for later
  • We had about 10 outfits for nb and 15 for 0-3 that we would rotate. Baby would go through about 3 outfits per day. I had 5 bibs and found that to be plenty. And about 3 swaddling blankets.

I feel like looked my entire pregnancy for a breakdown like this. I think I love you and I think my partner wishes this answer appeared three months ago so I stopped sooner ;-)
