FTM Fail: Boiling bottles

So apparently, if your bottles are touching the bottom of the pot when you boil them to sterilize them, even if you are moving them around constantly, the plastic gets burned and you basically ruin your bottles. This was after i already had a meltdown when I opened the package of bottles and saw the giant package of instructions and realized I don't even know how to use a bottle. So that was my fun first time mom fail yesterday. I just want to know how people heat up bottles in boiling water if the plastic gets burned if it is sitting in the pot. I think I'll be getting a bottle warmer and just using the microwave sterilizer from now on....

Re: FTM Fail: Boiling bottles

  • I bought glass bottles, so I don't think it'll be a problem. I think in the long run the glass bottles will be easier to maintain and keep clean. Look into them when and if you will be buying a new set.

Then you don't have to worry about damage or melting when drying in the dishwasher or heating up in microwave (plastic shouldn't be used to heat things up in microwave, the heat releases bad chemicals from the plastic into the fluid... Definetly don't want that going inside your baby).

The Avent glass bottles had great reviews. That's what I got.

  • I never boiled my bottles at all. I used the dishwasher and didn't heat up formula or breastmilk for DD. Then she never needed it warmed, so if we were out, we had no issues.
  • If the instructions say to boil on stovetop-call the company and demand a replacement. I used glass bottles (because I wanted to pump and freeze) but I have boiled plastic bottle tops and pump pieces without any melting. The only melted piece I had was a pump part that fell onto the heating element of the dishwasher (and Medela sent me a free replacement, even though it was my fault).

  • I've never boiled the bottles on the stovetop. I put them through the microwave sterilizer thing. If they are BPA free they should be fine being sterilized in the microwave. If you're worried, I'd use the dishwasher sterilization setting (if you have one). But definitely contact the company, I bet they send coupons, if nothing else!!!

  • When I decide to put breast milk in bottles I would use the biggest pot I had to boil them in so there was less of a chance on them touching the bottom when I did. If I was only doing one our two I would put the metal piece I use to steam stuff in the pot and just fill the water all the way up so there was no way of that happening, this works good for cleaning nipples and smaller parts too. Don't give baby cold milk unless they are a lot older. They have warm milk from the begining and I think it's more comforting for them when it's warm. Restaurants will always give you a pot of hot water or you can take a small thermos of hot water when you go somewhere.
  • We were told in our safety class to never heat up bottles for feeding times in the microwave.

  • To heat bottles, I would heat up water in a microwave safe bowl and then put the filled bottle (breast milk or formula) in there to warm. As for sterilizing, dishwasher and maybe once a month did the microwave sterilizing in the container that came with the set.
