Deli Meat, Listeria

Ugh! I couldn't find any posts on this so forgive me if this is a repeat! I just had a Turkey sandwich. Butterball roasted turkey, Nitrate, nitrite free, free of hormones etc.. Kinda freaking out because I didn't heat the meat. Last thing I want is Listeria... Am I being overly paranoid? What is your experience with this? Thanks ladies!

  • I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just gauge how you are feeling, try to hydrate, etc.. Did you make it yourself or buy it from somewhere? I think the threat of listeria is more prevalent from buying premade.

  • I was super careful about everything my first pregnancy, this time not so much. I've been eating lunch meat, sometimes heated, sometimes cold. I actually craved it this pregnancy lol. I'm fine, but that's my experience. I've read don't eat it at all, heat it up, and you're probably ok if it's from a reputable place. If you're really worried call your doctor.
  • I ate a cold turkey and cheese sandwich for lunch pretty much every day during second tri of my first pregnancy. The chances of getting sick are really, really low. I wouldn't worry too much!

  • Thanks ladies! You all really put my mind at ease!! I got it from a deli counter at stater bros. After I finished it then dawned on me! Thanks! I feel sooo much better now! ❤

You're far more likely to get listeria from a non-deli-meat source than you are deli meat, hot dogs, etc.

Here's a link to the most recent listeria outbreaks: https://www.cdc.gov/listeria/outbreaks/

  • I have been eating a deli meat sandwich almost daily myself. I have been craving them badly!!! Not worried at all, as was previously mentioned, it's pretty unlikely you'd get sick

I had Jimmy Johns yesterday. It was amazing.
I had JJ's yesterday too-- I was craving an Italian sub for a solid 12 hours, so I caved. It was exactly what I needed! Might go again this weekend since DH is away :D

  • My doctor mentioned that she's not NEARLY as concerned with listeria from deli meats and unpasteurized cheeses as she is with fruits and veggies that haven't been properly washed. She advised that I washed F&V with really hot water. I was surprised by that.

Just curious - Is the problem with deli meat that has been processed, or really any meat that was cooked then chilled (like cooked chicken that has then been chilled)?

Also, anyone into taking Apple Cider Vinegar shots? I take the Braggs unpasteurized daily. My doctor advised to steer away because its unpasteurized, but I've heard mix opinions.

My doctor said that your chances of listeria are slightly higher at deli's where the meat is sliced on site based on how well and how frequently the slicer is cleaned properly.

It's the same with my doctor.  Who knows how well things are cleaned at deli shops and/or whether or not the meat is kept at an ok temperature.  Making your own at home is the best route to go!

  • I've been having cold lunch meat this whole pregnancy (didn't with my first) and so far, so good! :) I just make sure to go to places that I trust. I think you'll be fine!

I'm more worried about nitrates and nitrites than listeria. You're fine :)
  • I've never, not ever, eaten a hot deli meat sandwich. I eat cold cuts whenever I feel like eating them. Same for fountain drinks, and soft serve icecream. I think you have about as much risk getting hit by a bus crossing the street, as you do getting Listeria from a Turkey sandwich. I'm not gonna stop walking to avoid getting hit by buses either.

    Happy Saturday.

  • My doctor said once in a while is ok but not everyday (probably a probability thing).

Don't stress about it! You'll be fine :)

  • I'm personally more worried about getting Listeria from eating a salad than I am from eating cold cuts. Unwashed veggies is no joke! Was soooo sick, thankfully wasn't pregnant at the time so my immune system was able to handle it and get me right as rain after like a week. I can only imagine how miserable it would be while pregnant....

  • If you're paranoid about it, why'd you eat it in the first place?! I just ate my first deli meat sandwich yesterday since finding out and it was the most amazing thing I've eaten in 16 weeks! I fully plan on eating another one!

I wasn't paranoid then ate it. It slipped my mind, and about an hour after I ate it, then I realized what I did thennnnnn I was paranoid. I won't willingly put something in my body if I am not sure about it or worried in any kind of way.
