Will I Produce Milk!?

Hey ladies... I was feeling confident with the answers the professionals had given me, and having seen so many women say they didn't leak at all before birth and then successfully BF.... But a few people have mentioned it to me today oddly enough and asked if I was leaking and their reaction made me self conscious again..... :/

I know there's posts about this already but I know the answer already some do some don't - I'm just wondering how many of you here have had success with ZERO leakage prior to birth? My nipples sting and burn and get shooting pains and my breats have doubled in size... But that's about it... Dry as can be..

Any reassurance that this may work for me would be great. :(

Re: Will I Produce Milk!?

  • Zero leaking with my first two pregnancies. I nursed my first to 18 months and my second well past her 2nd birthday.

  • I never leaked before I had my babies and produced more than enough.
  • I EBF for almost eight months and never leaked a drop before delivery and never really leaked much at all while I was breast feeding either. I didn't need nursing pads but wore them just in case. Don't worry! Nursing can be very challenging but try to go into it without anxiety. Leaking now doesn't mean success later. Your milk will come in (and when it does, oh boy, engorgement is no fun at all but you'll do fine). Read some bf books, take a class, go to a LLL meeting. The better prepared you are, the better!
  • Agree! Haven't leaked with baby 1, 2, or 3 yet! Lol! I plan to nurse this baby until at least a year!
  • Maybe try hand expressing for a second to show yourself that your body is indeed producing milk?

  • FTM here and I am dry as the Sahara desert!
I have asked my birthing teacher about this and she said its normal. As soon as your placenta passes your body will produce hormones that jump start your first milk to production. And in the beginning 2, 3 days your baby eats VERY little even though it seems like they are sucking 22 hours out of the day.
Than comes what we called "the day of tears" where your baby will have a growth spurt and cry. And you will have intense milk production and cry because your hormonal. It's the day when you sit on the couch watching Netflix and feeding your very hungry baby because that is all you can do.
  • No leaking with DS1, nursed him for 13 months. Your body knows exactly what to do! You got this!
  • I wasn't a big leaker with my first. I'm talking only just a barely noticeable drop here and there and I breastfed my first for 15 months.  I NEVER leaked with my second and I breastfed him for 26 months.  I haven't leaked a drop this time either.  I think this is just one of those instances where every body behaves differently.  My niece leaked tons and she wasn't able to breastfeed her son.  I think this is no indication.  You CAN do it!! You just have to be confident!

  • Zero leaking with 1, 2, and now 3. With DD2 my milk came in super fast while still in the hospital.
  • No leakage with #1 and this one. Breastfed just fine. Milk came in hours after she was pushed out.
  • Don't worry! Most women I know felt the same way and zero leakage over here this time and last time. Hugs.
  • I didn't leak either and then at the hospital with first two kids the doctors always tried to get me to express colostrum to get the babies to breastfeed and seriously nothing would come out. I swear I don't even have colostrum either. It took about 3-5 days with both of my kids for milk to come in. Then when it came in. It came in total engorgement both times. But I breastfed both 1 year. Good luck. I thought it would be easier the second time and breastfeeding was really hard. Really hard. The only thing that kept me going was the price of formula Hahahaha (you can buy so many pairs of shoes instead) I keep telling myself number 3 will be easier.
  • I'm 37w4d and I have had no leakage whatsoever.

  • Lol on number 3 and never had leaking previously, and I have always had wayyy too much milk!! I could have fed twins!
  • 37 weeks, FTM. Zero leakage. I want to be able to breastfeed in the worst way, but also know that if I can't my baby will be just fine. :)
  • I'm at FTM mom too. I worry about all this too. I want breastfeeding to go so well. A friend gave me this book, the mothers nursing companion by Kathleen Huggins. It has been super helpful. I'm not reading the whole thing, but it gives you some good basics and things to try when it's not working. It also has an appendix that she said was very helpful to look things up after getting her baby here and needing help. I think you can download it on iBooks or kindle too.
  • The fact that you have doubled in size
is very reassuring! You'll likely be fine!
  • Never leaked!  Boobs also didn't really increase in size during my first pregnancy.  I nursed DD until past her first birthday.
  • I haven't leaked either pregnancy, and didn't leak much while I was breastfeeding my DS#1. I am a huge producer (was told when DS#1 was in the NICU that I needed to keep some of my milk at home because they didn't have room to store it all.) My boobs also didn't grow *that* much until my milk came in around day 3-4.
