Zantac question

Our LO was given a prescription for Zantac, twice a day .7 ml. So far, I have given her three doses (one last night after I picked up her scrip) and twice today.

So, I noticed she was fussier than normal after her 1:30 feeding. The next time I fed her, she screamed her head off about an hour after eating. She did the same thing when I fed her in the 10 o'clock hour tonight.

She cries like she's in pain, which she never did before. She seems to have a lot of gas, which she's always had. But, she's never cried like that because of gas.

Has anyone else experienced this with Zantac? I'm gonna skip her doses tomorrow to see if she's any better. She may have reflux, but it never made her cry.

Re: Zantac question

  • If it didn't make her cry or be fussy I don't see the need for the Zantac. My dr. Said that it doesn't stop the spitting up, only makes it less acidic so it doesn't hurt. My LO is having some reflux as well, and he said to watch for signs it's bothering her and then he will prescribe her the zantac.

  • Yeah, the NP said pretty much the same. I think she prescribed it because I said he spit up could be really mucous-y and she said the Zantac would help with that. Honestly, she doesn't seem to be in pain, even when she spits up. She arches her back occasionally, and could definitely be fussy. But, it was nothing close to what she was like yesterday. And the only thing different was the Zantac. She's formula fed, and we've been using the same formula for the last three weeks with no issues.

I think I will discontinue the Zantac for today and see if it helps and I'll call her dr on Monday.
  • it takes about a week for it to kick in. It is up to you but I wouldn't stop giving it to her until at least a week to see the effects.
  • Zantac doesn't help mucous spit up! If your baby isn't fussy and no problems with weight gain, I wouldn't give an unnecessary med.
  • DD is 5 weeks and has had a lot of feeding issues. Our dr said the gassiness was likely related to the formula and the arching / spit up / screaming during feeding related to reflux. She is on her 4th formula at dr direction and is now on soy. She also takes Zantac 2x per day. Both her reflux symptoms and gassiness are better with this combo. So you may want to consider a formula change.

  • I EBF and I have had my 6 week old on Zantac for a week now. Prior to Zantac she would scream all through feedings as well as throughout the day. Her screaming fits usually came just prior to or during spitting up. Even if she hadn't eaten for hours. Since we started the Zantac she has been a completely different baby. She is MUCH calmer during feedings and she seems to tolerate spit up very well. We saw a big difference the very first day we gave it to her.

See, our LO doesn't have feeding problems, other than she eats too fast. She spits up a lot sometimes and she does arch her back occasionally. After giving her the Zantac, she screamed her little head off for straight 20 minutes. And that was a hour after feeding. It happened twice in the same day. She can get fussy, but the only time I've heard her cry like that was when they did the heel prick at the hospital - she was in pain. I read that one of the side effects of Zantac could be abdominal pain. I just don't want to keep giving it to her if it's causing her pain.
