Rock Concert

SO wants to take me out to a rock concert tonight. It's mostly standing but there is a handicapped section with seats where they would supposedly let me rest since I can't stand for too long. However I have been reading mixed opinions on Dr. Google regarding how loud music can harm the babies hearing and certain tones resonate in the amniotic fluid but once in a while won't hurt.

Have any of you gone to a concert while pregnant and if so, what was your experience like? Did you have fun or regret going and what have you heard regarding the risks of loud music with the baby?

Since May, ive skipped a concert, two music fests (all of which we had prepaid prob $300 on tix) and walked away from a live show at a cultural fest because i either didnt feel good, was too tired or was worried about LO's developing ears. I figure i can't control much, but i can control that, and knew that i would be way too worried if i went that it would not have been fun anyway. I don't have the right answer for you but those were the decisions that i made, and i don't really regret it other than blowing all that money!

I saw Bon Joni in my 3rd trimester while pregnant with DS. I never worried about the noise, it was one concert (and i know Bon Jovi is no where near as loud as some other rock concerts). If I was going all the time I may be more concerned.
We had seats, I could not of imagined having to stand the whole time. One other thing to think about, what is the bathroom situation like at the venue you are going to. If I knew there were going to be major lines I might be more inclined to pass (or lots of drunk people making a mess). We also skipped the encore so we could beat traffic getting out.
If you really want to go, go for it. If it is just something to do tonight, maybe send DH with a friend.

Edit... oh. And I had a blast I was very glad I went!

  • I went to the gun range a few weeks back, didn't really think about the baby's developing ears. Afterwards I thought about it, and felt a little guilty about the loud sounds. I'm sure everything was okay, but I wouldn't go again.
If you have guilt about going, I wouldn't. IMO. I'm sure it okay and safe to go, but maybe check with your doctor?

    I second this.
I went to a fall out boy concert last month (around 21 weeks) it was at an outside venue (I likely still would have went if it was an indoor venue) I'm not worried, I would go!

I rocked out to Metallica while pregnant with my daughter, probably around 7 months! Baby was just a head banging away in my belly!
Slipknot is coming on Halloween but I'll be super pregnant and don't have a babysitter plus I've seen them before so that's okay.
Enjoy the concert and rock on!

Also, my daughter loves heavy metal now lol

I just went to slipknot the other day with my brother and his friends and my DH.. It was fun but after reading this post if my little guy comes out with hearing problems I will hate myself for life!!!
  • Ehhhh, I have full plans next month to go see my favorite band in concert, not once really concerned about noise level as its a once in a blue moon moment. I think you'll be good to go!
  • Thanks everyone for sharing. It's Social Distortion at an outdoor venue. Don't think it'll be super loud so I'm going to go. SO is fine with skipping out early if need be. Figure I better go now because once I get into the third tri, may not want to do anything.

I wouldn't worry. I read that prolonged exposure could possibly affect LO's hearing. One Slipknot concert should be fine.

I can tell you that at times I think my almost 2 year old daughter has a hearing problem, and than I whisper something like "dessert", "bath", or going to the park and she hears that right away! She just chooses to only listen to certain things!!
  • No mosh pit sorry that is off the books. Also stay away from super smoky areas. You are going to be more sensitive to it. Unfortunately one local band we like to see is always at a smokey bar so I have to skip it.
  • I work in music and am at LOUD concerts regularly. My doctor said it's absolutely fine. You would have to stand practically in front of the speakers at full blast to be at any risk.

Thank you @mollypuss1! I'm more relieved now. Will definitely stay away from those speakers.
  • I bought DH foo fighters tickets for Christmas before I was pregnant and the concert is this Tuesday. We have seats thank god. I was planning on getting him the pit tickets but they were a little more then what I wanted to spend, lucky I didn't get them after all or I wouldn't be going.
  • Concerts are our "thing" and I've been to 5 or 6 since being pregnant. I asked my midwife about them and she had no issues with my going. I will say that the sheer exhaustion of the first trimester totally made me fall asleep at one though. :P
  • My husband and I have already been to Breaking Benjamin and Dave Matthews, so I'm not skipping out on Kelly Clarkson or Foo Fighters the next couple months. Thankfully we have seats so I won't need to stand if I don't want to. I'm not worried about the baby, like if I were to put in ear plugs, I would have to assume that all the cushion around the baby would be like "ear plugs" for her. Kind of like when you're under water and sounds aren't as loud.
  • Ok now I feel better lol he seemed to really enjoy the concert lol he was moving around the whole time lol now that I know it shouldn't bother him I feel better lol

So jealous!!! I've been to a few concerts this pregnancy. Tomorrow we are going to see Def Leppord! We have seats, otherwise I wouldn't go. Only because the heat here in Texas.
I am also going to go shooting, but it's an out door range.

Went to my 11th foo concert this past July 4th and was 5+ months pregnant. Such a great show...baby kicked during the whole thing!! Its safe to say he's a fan :) Have fun!!
  • As I understand it things sound muffled and weird for little ones in utero. Think about how little you hear when you're underwater in a pool. What might be damaging noise levels for anyone on the outside won't be nearly as loud inside. Also I am mad-jealous of everyone going to gigs. It seems half my friends back home are at V Festival this weekend, and you lot are all heading to shows...and here's me sat on my couch listening to the kiddo playing Hot Cross Buns on the recorder 73682952594 times...
  • I went to a Shinedown concert in my 3rd trimester with my first daughter. Pretty sure they are well protected inside us, and she has never had any problems. As for you, just make sure you have a place to go sit if you want and that no one will be running into you lol. We were in general admission but hung out towards the back so I wasn't completely cramped with people and go sit if needed
  • Lurking from O15 :)
You will absolutely not damage baby's ears in utero. I have confirmed that with Audiologists (work in hearing healthcare). I've been to over 10 concerts and two camping music festivals with tons of music this summer. Stay hydrated and sit when needed. I felt baby boy kick the first time at a concert! He loves it!

Then why is hearing a concern when going to a shooting range?  Not trying to start anything, honestly, but I would guess that a close-range gunshot is about the same volume as a concert, and doesn't go on nearly as long...  I've never shot a gun, though, so I could totally be wrong.

ETA: According to Google, and depending on the weapon, a gunshot can be approximately 20-70 Db louder than a concert.  The more you know!

I am super excited to go, my husband is even more pumped then I am. He has been a fan since Nirvana days and this will be the first time he has ever gone to see them. We live in Ohio but the concert is near Pittsburgh which we live about an hour from the venue. The concert wasn't advertised on the radio here in Ohio so he had no idea they were even coming. I bought the tickets a few months before Christmas and surprised him Christmas Day with them. DH says that the baby will come out rocking to FF.
  • Sorry I am terrible at posting a reply properly on my phone. You answered your own question about the shooting though. It is much louder!
Concerts are usually loud enough for you to damage your own hearing, especially the closer you are to speakers. If you go often it is recommended to wear hearing protection yourself and we put earmuffs on our toddler if he wants to come to one too!

    Thanks! I can't wait
  • Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley are coming in concert 2 weeks before my due date. Seriously bummed I didn't get tickets but I figured walking through a stadium and sitting in not so comfy chairs 2 weeks out probably won't be too appealing at that point. I would totally go if it was earlier on.
  • @hmf0245 let me just say the foo fighters concert last night was hands down the BEST concert I have ever been too!!! I had to laugh at all the dirty looks I got, I guess pregnant people aren't suppose to go to rock concerts lol Dave is seriously hands down the best performer of all time. I am so glad I didn't give my ticket up.

So glad you enjoyed the show. I am super jealous as I love the Foo fighters... speaking of dirty looks, I was waiting in line to get into the Social Distortion show and stopped at this security guard holding wrist bands. He just looked at me and say "uh you're not drinking." I had no idea what he was talking about or what the wristbands were for (assumed everyone needed them to get in). I just kept walking towards the door. Didn't realize until I got in that the wrist bands were for drinking. Hahaha. I was mortified for a moment that the guy and the many people around thought that I was trying to drink at the concert. Oh well, people always assume the worst! And yes I get dirty looks when out too. Like we should be sitting at home for 9 months.

Everyone I talked to was like it won't be as great bc Dave has a broken leg. Let me tell you, his broken leg did not stop him from putting on an awesome show. It was so funny the show had just started and he was screaming and some guy held his ears and Dave called him out on it. He was like "your at a f*****g rock concert dude and your holding your ears when I scream? What you don't like it when I scream? (As he proceeds to scream again lol) then he said to the guy "is this your 1st FF concert and the guy said no it was his 2nd. Omg I thought Dave was gonna lose it laughing. When we had to go through security check the woman doing the pat down was like "when are you due?" and before I could answer the lady behind me was like she isn't she's just fat. I turned around and so she could see my clearly pregnant belly and was like actually I'm due beginning of Nov. thank you very much. I really wanted to be like go f**k off before i knock your teeth down your throat lol

Never been to a foo fighters concert. Sounds like i am missing out and need to change that!...Omg who the hell says that especially to a stranger? It would take all I had not to knock someone's teeth down their throat.
  • @helsbels222 yeah I was surprised to say the least. I've never had a stranger make comments to me or about me while pregnant with any of my pregnancies and was completely shocked when she said it. It was a concert not like I'm doing drugs or something worse.
