Postpartum swelling/edema

Did anyone else get super swollen after delivery? My ankles and legs are sooooooo swollen. Really bad pitting edema. Worse then when I was pregnant. Just wondering how long it took some of you to decrease your swelling? I'm 2 wks pp on saturday.

Re: Postpartum swelling/edema

  • My swelling has been worse after delivery as well. I am 8 days PP and yesterday was the first day I could get my shoes to somewhat fit. I am still pretty swollen in my feet and legs but it is getting better. Dr told me it could last for 2 weeks.

  • Same here. Doc said it could be awhile. Just still watch for signs of Pre E. But the swelling is a part of post partum.
  • With DS1, yes.... I had major swelling that was far worse than when I was pregnant.. when I smiled in pictures, I couldn't keep my eyes open. I don't remember it lasting that long, though..

  • I had no swelling during pregnancy but puffed up pretty bad 2 days pp. I wore compression socks every day and the swelling was gone by 9 days pp. I also drank herbal tea to help diurese.
  • I heard it can last up to a month, mine was better/gone after one week pp. Try not to eat much salt and elevate your feet above your heart when you are seated.
  • Yes! I had it bad with my first and with this one again.

  • Ugh it's the worst! Finally going down a little though after 2 wks. Have been doing the feet up as much as possible and compression socks and it seems to be helping =)
    Thank you all!
  • Boil organic parsley and drink the water like a tea. That took care of the swelling for me within about 24 hours.
  • I was already insanely swollen when I delivered and it only got worse after. I could barely bend my knees. It started getting better around 10 days PP. I'm 4 weeks PP now and was JUST able to get some "real" shoes on a couple days ago. It feels like it takes forever to
    subside.
  • I had really bad swelling after delivery. It hurt to move for a few days and I was somewhat swollen still for about 7-10 days.
  • My feet were swollen horribly for about 6 days. Now 8 days pp and they're almost back to normal!
  • I had no swelling during pregnancy, but around day 4 pp, I developed a lot of swelling in my feet and ankles. It was really painful in the one ankle. Thankfully, it lasted only a few days and is gone now. I was told to take 600 mg of ibprophen every 6 hours.
  • Yep, this is my feet and ankles:
  • 2 days pp here but I'm swollen from the waist down. Not sure if c section vs vaginal birth makes any difference in the swelling. Can't wait to start feeling better.
  • My Swelling was awful after delivery! They put me on lasix while I was in the hospital (thank god I still had the cath in!!). It improved for a few days then returned in full-force! My OB prescribed a mild fluid pill and that helped a lot! I did notice that it affected my milk production but the pitting edema is both pailful and dangerous so it's definitely not something to ignore!
