are certain fetal Doppler's harmful??

Been wanting to purchase a Doppler but just don't know where to look.. Have read that they may be harmful as well? I was going to call my OB on Monday... In the meantime, I don't want to spend morw than $30 so has anyone bought one for under $30 that worked for 14+ weeks?

Re: are certain fetal Doppler's harmful??

  • I know from my own experience my children hated dopplers, specifically the one I have cooking now. She will kick, bump and move away from it everytime one is used and from my understanding this is quite common and believed to be a sign that they may be harmful or annoying to babies in utero. Also I dont see the need in buying one, if you are low risk with a normal progressing pregnancy why get one? You may just end up worrying yourself more one day if your laying in bed and go to use it and can't pick up the heartbeat. Like I said with having a stubborn little one doctors often find it hard to pick up her heartbeat, so I can imagine if I try to one day do it and can't find it id freak out most likely over nothing.

  • I don't buy the arm-flailing that they are harmful.

I just don't need something to obsess/worry over. I see it like a scale. I don't own one because I don't want to be worried by one.

All of this. I had a Doppler last time and it caused me a lot of anxiety - not through fear of causing harm but through not being able to find the heartbeat as quickly as my midwife could. So I ditched it ready for this pregnancy. Now that I can feel my baby every day that's enough reassurance for me.
And there are no scales in my house either. ;)
  • I have a doppler, and I love it.
    Best $95 I've ever spent.
The reason why doctors don't like you to get one, is because if you can't find the heartbeat, it causes unnecessary stress.
I heard my baby for the first time at 15 weeks on my home doppler.
Sometimes, it takes a while to find it.
I've even had to put it down, and come back and try again at a different time.
If you feel like you're one to stress easily, don't buy one.
But if you are able to realize the baby could be hiding, and that everything is okay... I say go for it! :)
    Best of luck.
  • I didn't have my own, but at my dr app and ultrasounds baby did everything to move away from it !

100% this. You have to be prepared to not find it sometimes and not let that freak you out.

  • I found the HB at 10 weeks then couldn't find it again for another week. Babies don't like them because they are loud, and it's recommended that you don't use it more than a couple of time per week and for no more than 15 minutes at a time. I liked mine for reassurance until I started feeling regular movement, then I sold it on ebay.

I am low risk but had a miscarriage last time around... Also don't see a lot of growth happening and then I see othee woman that have a bump! I'm skinny too so I feel as if I should be showing soon?? Obviously a worry wart so I'll probably not do the Doppler anyhow! I appreciate all of your advice!:) love hearing from mom's like you all!
  • If you're a worrier don't get a home Doppler, as they aren't as sensitive as the ones midwives use. However, as PP said, if you don't mind not finding the HB every time you try then I don't see a problem with getting one. I personally won't be getting one as I'm a complete worry wart!
  • I love my doppler. I ordered one to rent at 17 weeks. I don't use it everyday, about every 3 days just for reassurance. About 5 years ago I had a miscarriage early on. I'm 22 weeks along now, but it makes me feel amazing to hear my baby's heartbeat and know he's doing alright in there :)
  • I used to think dopplers were pointless, but I was super paranoid about this pregnancy (my 3rd). I just had a "bad feeling" that I couldn't shake and since I havent had my first appt yet, I caved and got one. I love mine. I got a good one (sonoline b) and was lucky to find one at a consignment store for half the usual price. I've only used it a couple times and it's helped me not worry. But like someone previously stated, be prepared to have a harder time finding a HB. The first time it took me about 10 min. The second time maybe 2.
