"It's when you know you're licked before you begin, but you begin anyway and see it through no matter what. You rarely win, but sometimes you do." -Atticus Finch, To Kill A Mockingbird
To me, both are pretty trendy and common these days with all the variations and nicknames. That said, when I hear Ella I assume it short for something else. I'd go with Emma.
My niece is named Ella so I'm leaning more that way. Both names are classic popular and not cheap city trend popular, they are both good choices. If you really can't decide, maybe leave it up to the baby when she's born? See which name you feel suits her best. Good luck and congratulations!
ETA no one has ever referenced my niece to the Rihanna song. That would have been more an issue for the Ella's born around the time that came out. I don't hear that song ever anymore, so it's unlikely our children will hear it much, either. If anyone calls her that, it's adults who should know better. Just my opinion

Both are cute but Emma has far more substance to it. Ella is pretty but almost like half a name. Is it Ellen, or Eleanor, or Elaine...if you know what I mean.
I like them both, but as someone who grew up with a hugely popular name, it's frustrating to deal with in school. 10% of the girls in my grade had the same name as me (no lie--some had slightly different spellings, but it's irritating to go by Stephanie K. your whole school career.)

I think they're both really popular right now.
