Spinning While pregnant

hey all. I've finally been cleared to work out. Heading to a spinning class tomorrow. Got a heart monitor. What other precautions - besides keeping my heartbeat below 140 - should I be aware of? Thanks! I'm 4 1/2 months.

Re: Spinning While pregnant

  • You need to pass the "speaking test" at all times during your workout, meaning if you're respiration is heavy enough that you cannot talk, the effort is too much. This assures you get enough oxygen at all times. Other than that, hydration! Drink a lot before, during and after your workout. And have fun! =)

  • My dr mentioned to be cautious about overheating during any type of workout, so watch out for that.  Also, have fun!  :)
  • Depending on your proportions, I've also been told to watch out for your lower back. I lift the handlebars up to the highest they'll go and try to make sure I'm not compressing at all.

I have also had instructors tell me that as I get bigger I may want to do the standing sections seated, but that's more of a balance issue.
  • I usually don't add resistance every time they say to add and don't go as fast during sprints. You will do great! Rest when you need to and listen to your body

  • With spin , I would be most worried about overheating and make sure you're handle bars are positioned properly :)
  • Thanks ladies. Great advice. Got my water bottle and I'm headed in!
  • I spin 3-4 times a week--my husband makes sure to ask my doctor if it's ok at basically all of our check ups! I don't push myself like I did pre-pregnancy but I definitely do get out of breath for short periods of time. The doctor said there is very little chance (really no chance) of my body temperature getting dangerously high from something like spin, though I do always make sure I sit by one of the fans in the room and ask the staff to turn it on before class.
I also almost always mention to the instructor that I'm pregnant, they have often had helpful advice as far as body positioning. On the days I spin, I make sure to drink my whole bottle during class and tons of water the rest of the day too.
Hope you had a great time!

I can't even talk and walk at the same time...sometimes I can't talk and talk at the same time. But I've still been working out!
  • When I spin, the instructor tells me to only go to 10 on resistance while everyone does 20+

Lol! This is what my doctor and trainer recommended. I do high intensity workouts and pre-pregnancy being out of breath was the norm. I can't do that level of intensity now but I can keep the same exercises.
  • Just wanted to say YAY for being able to workout again!
  • Double check with your OB but many Obs will tell you the 140 HR is outdated and you don't need to monitor your HR- nice definitely gets over 140 when I run or do most workouts. Happy working out!!
