Diaper change when just wet?

As a FTM I am in awe at the # of diapers we go through, but am wondering if other moms change when just wet, not poopy? My 3 week old boy HATES being wet & often I find when he is fussy & it's not hunger related that he is wet. He is instantly content when I change him into a dry diaper. Often he is just wet & not poopy too, so we go through more diapers to keep him dry & happy.

Re: Diaper change when just wet?

  • My first was like that, but we use cloth, so it wasn't a big deal in my head to change him whenever he fussed. Our 2nd little guy doesn't really seem to care though, so I mostly just change him when he poops. Plus he does it frequently enough that he's never sitting in a wet diaper for too long...

  • We change it every time weather just wet or not. He gets diaper rash really easy though so lots of diapers and lots of butt paste here.
  • I change my newborn a lot. I don't like him being dirty and he doesn't like it either. Sometimes I just changed him into a new one and he tinkles right away so I change him again. But anything to keep my little one clean, comfortable and happy!
  • I change LO wet or dry. He is only pooping once or twice a day. I do change him everytime he wakes from a nap. He naps often enough that he isn't wet long.
  • I change my LO after every feeding during the daytime and only once at night when it is uncomfortable and he gets wet. During the daytime he gets fussy if he is wet for too long. How our family saved money is we bought a box of luvs and a box of pampers swaddlers. The luvs were almost half the cost but he needs changed more often. So we use the luvs during the day and the pampers at night time
  • I don't change her Whe she pees just once.. But when her diaper is soggy.
  • If it's just wet I won't change her unless it is pretty full. Diapers are expensive!
  • We use cloth diapers, so I've never considered not changing her.  I change her pretty often… about every hour and a half, just to make sure.  I can't imagine sitting in my own pee so I don't want baby to!
  • I change LO every feeding. We go through a lot of diapers!
  • That's how our daughter is. We change her about 12-14 times a day.
  • We change her right before feedings, during feedings if she decides to poo, and if her wet diaper makes her cry. If I changed her diaper every time she wet it a little, we would be changing diapers every 20 minutes. She's never had a diaper rash, so I'm comfortable with this.
  • I generally change nappies before a feed unless he becomes too soggy and fussy or the nappy is dirty in which case I'll change straight away. Like @qtjo5 all of my babies seem to love pooping in a fresh nappy- it's sometimes like they hold it in lol. We usually have 6-7 feeds a day and go through 8-10 nappies a day which seems about the norm at this age. I also have a toddler who is nearly two and she only uses about 6 nappies a day x
  • We change before every feeding plus when she poops so we are definitely in the 12-18 diapers a day range. This LO poops all.the.time. lol.

This exactly. My LO pees every 15 minutes it seems. We're still going thru 8 or 10 diapers a day.

I feel the same way @mers90 I couldn't imagine just sitting around in my pee. I change him anytime he is wet, even if he pees right after I just changed him. I go through a lot of diapers but I want him to be comfortable as well @jerseygirl227
  • I change DS before every feeding day/night which it's always wet sometimes more soaked then others, especially at m night when he goes 6hrs before his next feeding. He poops usually once/ twice a day and he fills them suckers, sometimes right after another bc he seems to like to wait for a fresh diaper before continuing pooping. Somedays he sharts a couple times a day if he really gassy. So those days we go through more diapers but on a normal day we probably go through 8-10 diapers.
  • I change my LO after every feeding. He typically poops while he's eating or just after. I don't want him sitting in his own pee if it's loaded. I would hate it, so I don't want him in it.
  • Anyone hate changing the diaper after feeding if LO is either falling or already asleep? When we do this, it can throw him into a fussy fit...

This is the reason I've switched to changing her before feed, or if she's screaming hungry - after the first side
  • @mrsrep123 & @sarahsairsair
I always change before feed too. Actually was taught by nurses in the hospital to do that. Helps wake baby up to feed
  • @ecloho and @sarahsairsair
I always try to change before a feeding too but many times my son wakes up and immediately wants to feed and there is no denying that. He will cry and cry until the nipple is in his mouth. The more he cries, the more chances of gas... Ugh

  • I do it after feeding bc I'm trying to do the Eat, Play, Sleep routine so he learns to put himself to sleep rather than me nurse him to sleep. It was tough at first but now he's a champ at it.
  • We go through a TON of diapers a day. He hates being just a little wet. I bet I go through 15 a day easily. it never fails you put one on and he pees within 30 seconds.
  • Yep @jesshrou same here
  • My LO definitely gets changed immediately whether he pees or has a bowel movement. I can't take the smell and I know he doesn't like sitting with a dirty diaper on.

Plus I really like those strip indicators on the pampers to let me know that there is some wetness and he needs to be changed.

I change her before feeding too because she falls asleep almost every time she nurses.
  • We change her before a feed - same reason as dine of the others ---she falls asleep and I don't want to make her cranky after she's fed and content. We go through 10-12 diapers a day. She fusses in particularly wet ones in between feeds. Little one poos once every 2 days or so...so she'd be sitting in just the one for awhile.

Besides nappy rash is caused by moisture from wet nappies. Won't risk it even for the sake of saving money.
