High-Risk Pregnancy

Bp spiking upon sitting or standing, placed in bed rest. No preeclampsia.

I'm 31 wks and my bp is spiking from around 117/73 to 153/95 when going from lying down to sitting up. My doctor doesn't know what's going on since all tests for preeclampsia have come back fine. Sending me to a perinatologist hopefully this week. I'm on bedrest at least until then. I also have GD but it is easily controlled with diet. Has anyone else dealt with this and if so, what was the solution and outcome?

Re: Bp spiking upon sitting or standing, placed in bed rest. No preeclampsia.

  • Yes. This is my life. My doctor diagnosed me with gestational hypertension at 31 weeks. I also had it with my first pregnancy and was delivered at 36 weeks. Basically, your body starts out with these bp spikes but no protein in urine or abnormal bloodwork and eventually it just stays elevated and/or you develop full blown preeclampsia. I am on week 3 of bed rest and my bp just keeps getting higher. When I lie down it's in the 120s/80s and when i am sitting up or moving around it's spiking as high as 170/93. I have to do 24hr urine tests and blood work every 2 days. I am on a day to day basis and they will either deliver me by 37 weeks or immediately if my bp spikes get any worse. I am currently 34w4days. Doctor said it is a "precursor" to preeclampsia and they have to watch it very closely to try to stay ahead of it. Just rest upx drink lots of water, and try to keep the spikes at a minimum to avoid a preemie. My daughter was fine at 36 weeks and this little one will be out by then too. It's just not safe for baby to be in there when your bp is so high. Take it easy, mama!

  • Thank you for the info! The specialist isn't able to see me until next Wednesday! Trying not to stress too much in the mean time.
  • Are you in the hospital or at home and do you take your pressures at home?
  • I was in the hospital last wed-thurs but since my bp levels out when I'm resting, they sent me home. I do check my levels at home and am to call the doctor if it gets high while resting. I see the doctor every few days and every time my bp exceeds 160/90 (which is frequent the further along I get) they send me to L&D for monitoring. As soon as my bp stays high or doesn't drop when I'm resting then they will induce me. But they won't let me go further than 37 weeks regardless because they are trying to keep it under control before it turns to full blown preeclampsia. So for now, I am home resting until that stops working. Based on my elevating bps, doctor says I will be delivering in 2 weeks time or sooner (36 weeks). Try not to stress too much, it only makes it worse (yea, right , I know lol) But just know that at this gestation the babies will be ok.
  • With my first they actually put me on BP medication because it was spiking and slowly raising, but not enough to be concerned and urine & blood tests came back ok.  After what seemed like the millionth NST (probably only 3rd) I was placed on bed rest, went back in to the hospital the next day to drop off urine sample & get blood work again, they told me I wasn't going home & was going to have a baby either through induction or c-section, my choice.  I chose c-section & at 7:18 the next morning he was born at 39 weeks +4 days, healthy and perfect.

With my second my BP spiked all of a sudden (I also fell and hit my head on the concrete resulting in 8 stitches).  This time after my 24 hour UA/blood work/NST my BP was 190/100 when I was initially hooked up.  In my defense, like an idiot I walked from the hospital's parking garage up to L&D after dropping off my sample instead of getting a wheelchair escort, but it wasn't going down consistently after being hooked up to the monitor for an hour.  This time they mentioned full blown preeclampsia.  I had another c-section and delivered a healthy baby girl at 38 weeks.

I think I'm done having babies...the last month just does a number on me.  Until that point I have pretty uneventful pregnancies.
  • I am going through the same I am 35 wks
  • I saw the specialist two days ago and am now home on bedrest and meds. We've had to adjust the dosages a couple of times but it seems to be working today!!! The doctor said that the reason my spikes don't make any sense is that just before you develop preeclampsia your body loses its ability to control its own pressures. Feeling more at ease now that we are in such good hands, feeling confident in the medical team we met with at UW.
