Average gestation?

I've had quite a few friends & friends of friends give birth over the past couple of months and only one of them has made it to 40 weeks! The others (4) have all been 36-38 weeks! All of them have also been first time pregnancies and all went into labor naturally. Is this just a fluke that so many were at least 2 weeks early? Or is this more common than I think? I'm now trying to get in the mindset that it's VERY likely I can go into labor at 37/38 weeks... I'm obviously FTM as well ;-)

Re: Average gestation?

  • I've never looked at statistics for it, but my first came naturally at 36w6d and was 6lb9oz
It never hurts to be prepared a little early!

  • I am on #4 and have delivered on, day before and day after EDD, but it seems all the women I know who have had babies the last couple months have been going a week AFTER they're EDD. Most of them were on their first and another was her 4th and first not to come early.
  • Your EDD is only an estimate - most doctors say plus or minus 2 weeks. Some babies are born a couple weeks early, and some a couple weeks late.
    Me: 28, DH: 40
    Married 9/28/13
    DS born 11/12/15
    EDD 8/13/18
  • I look to my mom for when baby will come. Out of 4 kids only 1 wasn't induced and she was 2 days after due date. I am hoping to go into labor naturally but odds don't look good.
First baby I was induced 39w 3d for a few different things.
  • I googled this out of curiosity and it looks like the average is 41 weeks 3 days for FTM's.

It was also mentioned that gestation length tends to run the same in the maternal line of the family. Maybe find out how early/on-time/after due date you were born. Might give you a bit more insight.

Now I'm going to have to call my mom and see how close I was born to due date!!! Lol
  • With DD1, my due date according to my LMP was Oct. 19, My OB pushed it up to Oct. 12 b/c she was measuring huge(~12lb+ at birth, but was actually only 8lb14.9oz at birth). My water broke on Oct. 6 and I had her that night.

Due dates are as PPs said, an estimate. Your LO will come when it's ready.

  • For me I couldn't use my maternal line as a guide line. My mother had pre-eclampsia with my brother and myself. My first 3 were 41wk4and the 4th at 39 wks, who knows about this one.
  • My mother had us all 4-7 days before her due date. I was induced with# 1 at 37.5 weeks but I was expecting him a little early

I think every pregnancy is different. Both my sister and I were a month early, but DS was 2 weeks late.

  • 1st was 39w2d 2nd was 41 weeks exactly.-*my mom- 1st 42 weeks 2nd 41 weeks and third 40 weeks.
  • Both of my mother's pregnancies went to 42 weeks. Each time, she was scheduled for an induction but was already in labor (which she mistook for BH) by the time she arrived at the hospital.
  • My son was came on his own at exactly 38 weeks. My daughter was induced at 37 weeks, but wasn't going to be holding on for another three weeks because I was already dilating and having contraction (even though I couldn't feel them). We are certain about the due dates too because they were fertility babies.
  • I was 2 weeks late, my sister was on her due date and my nephew was 1 week early. I'm expecting to go late.
  • See my doc office considers anything after 37weeks to be full term. So according to them both my boys were full term although both came before EDD.

  • I've heard far more stories of ladies going late rather than early. My SIL went a week late (conveniently the morning of when she was going to be induced)... Whether my baby is born 2 weeks early (like I was), on the EDD (like my older brother), a few days late (like my little brother), or at some other time, if your baby has reached the 37 week, it's full term and there generally aren't going to be any issues.

That being said, I probably will have my bag for the hospital at least close to ready to go a few weeks prior to my due date, but there really isn't a hard and fast deadline for when we get to meet our little man (though I sure wish there was! I'm getting excited!!)
  • I was 39 wks and 4 days......
  • I had to be induced, my mother was a natural medicine fanatic and my father had to beg after week 42 or something like that. I ended up being a C section.

I'm 29 weeks and my head just exploded because I thought I had 12 weeks but even if I go full term, that's 11 and LO will likely not wait that long since I've already had issues with pre term labor.
    Do unto others.
  • I can't go by maternal line either.  My mom didn't have a true EDD with me because I was a 'skipped a pill' baby and an only child.  All I know is her OB was convinced I'd be at least 10 days later than I was and that I'd be a 10+ lb boy.  6lb2oz girl, so LOL to that estimate.
  • I don't think I can go by my maternal line either because my twin brother and i were Ivf babies and born premature too boot.

  • I was a 10pound 10oz baby and my husband was 5pounds 13oz... I'm hoping For our little guy to be in between and be 7 or 8 pounds...
  • 1st pregnancy was induced just over 41 weeks. Second pregnancy induced at just before 41 weeks.

I keep getting told that this one will come early but if it repeats I dont forsee her making an appearance without being induced lol
