Almost 20 weeks question

Hello everyone!

I will be 20 weeks on tuesday, this is my 2nd pregnancy this year (first mmc at 10 weeks) and i cant seem to shake bad feelings between appts. So my main concern/ question is when you ladies are laying down are you able to feel the baby when you push softly on your stomach? And is your bump hard?

I know this is prb a dumb question but google didnt help me and i just want to know if im the only one who cant :( i have also not felt baby move and with my first i felt it around 18 weeks. So i am hopefully just being paranoid!

Re: Almost 20 weeks question

  • I'll be 20 wks Monday and a ftm...my belly is def hard but I don't think I've felt my little man move. I felt a little something during the week but can't be sure it was him or not. Until I feel something more frequently I won't know what to compare it to so...you're not alone. I've read a lot of threads of moms that have started feeling movement as early as 16 weeks so I'm def anxious and can't wait! Congrats on your pregnancy

I'm not sure what your build was like pre baby but I'll tell you mine in case it helps. I was hanging around 170lbs with some flab before I got pregnant this time - nothing crazy and it was easy to hide. I'm 20weeks, a FTM and haven't gained any weight yet but have a good sized hard baby bump while standing. When I lay down on my back it almost completely vanishes and is all mushy. I still am waiting to feel her move around as well. I think everyone has a different "normal" and many of us are definitely still waiting to feel our LOs. Stay positive! :)

Eta: missed the part about you being PGAL - so sorry about your previous loss - that definitely throws us all for a loop sometimes. There's a semi regular PGAL thread I recommend you check into, saw one a day or two ago on the feed. I don't really join in anymore but I do like to read the other posts, helps validate my feelings and I end up getting my positivity back.

  • Sorry to hear about your loss.

I think it's different for everyone. I'm 20 weeks and I can feel her move constantly, and just started feeling her move from the outer part. But, my SIL didn't feel her daughter till much later. When was your last ob appointment? Do you go for appointments monthly or bi weekly? Maybe your doctor can shed some light a bit better then us?

  • You may have an anterior placenta and if so that is probably why you haven't felt the baby move yet. (That means the placenta is between the baby and your belly, providing extra "cushion" making it harder to feel.)

When is your anatomy scan ultrasound? Hopefully it is soon and the tech can confirm that you have a very energetic baby that is just hidden behind your placenta. Soon our babies will be big enough and strong enough that they'll be throwing punches that everyone can feel!

Being PGLA (pregnant after a loss) makes it hard to relax and have an enjoyable pregnancy. With my mc there was no mistaking what was happening so I'm angle to tell myself that if there's no cramping or gushing then the baby must be fine. I can't imagine trying to be calm with a history of mmc. Feel free to check in with us PGLA ladies for support. It's nice to talk to people who've been through it also.
  • Iv been feeling movement for a while now, but ive had soooo many people say something like "wow, so early! I didnt feel movement until 22/24/25 weeks!". I get the feeling that despite this site telling us it starts early, this is the exception, not the rule. Do you have your anatomy scan soon? As a PGAL myself, i found it reassuring to see a healthy little bub on the screen!

My tummy is also definately getting harder, but I still have the soft little bit of flab that i had previously. When i lay down i dont try to feel for bub, it feels to yuk to touch my tummy when im on my back! I dont know why!

I would let your midwife know though if its stressing you. Wether she can help or not, i find it helps my stress levels that she knows whats going on and says its normal.
  • I agree with the placenta comments. Also depending on your body type. When have a posterior placenta so I feel little man all the time and have since about 15 weeks but this is my second child and my weight is about 139 at 20 weeks. My belly isn't always hard where he is but some times is it. My cervix is super low this time so that is also contributing to the constant movement I feel. (Thanks James Jr. for leaving mommy in shambles for you new little brother)
  • If I lay on my back and feel around I can sort of feel something haha. I am definitely a chubby mumma and a FTM. Feels like I'm pushing on a full bladder.
Apologies if that doesnt make any sense
  • I'm 20w1d and have a hard stomach now, but barely feel LO move. I have an anterior placenta and have been feeling a rolling sensation for a couple of weeks, but never kicks and not a whole lot of movement. I'm pretty sure it's him, but it's hard to distinguish from gas and other movements. I can't manipulate him to moving for him either like other women can by eating or drinking specific things and lying in different positions. He just does what he wants regardless. I'm just being patient and giving it time so I don't worry. It's normal.
  • Oh yeah placenta and baby position can make such a difference on both of these things. My belly with my daughter never got even close to as big as with my son and baby's were very close to the same size and my end weight was exactly the same so it was clearly positional.
  • Seems like lots of PPs thing you can't feel the baby move? Is that the case? Is your stomach hard when you lay down?

I definitely get the most movement action when I lay down and I have felt some very hard bumps moving around. One minute there is a super hard lump in my abdomen, next minute it's totally gone. I've decided that could be the baby rolling around re-positioning.

I had a MMC last Dec too and know how scary it can be. When you consistently start feeling movement, it all starts to feel better. I have my a/s next week and am not worried for the first appt ever.
  • I'm about 19 weeks I started feeling movement around 17 weeks and some days, there's days I don't feel much of anything. Sometimes it's a thump, this week it's mainly been rolling and squirming feelings. I also have a lot of really loud digestion and bubbling in my stomach from gas so sometimes it's hard to distinguish between the two because it seems like she starts moving the most after meals which is also when the gas issues start.
  • Doctor told me that for a FTM it can be as far a long as 24 weeks before feeling movement. Don't stress over it!
  • I'm 20 weeks today and first felt something little once at 18 weeks, then it was only once or twice that week and 19 weeks a little more each day. I too had a loss earlier this year (at 8 weeks) and I understand your concerned feelings especially not yet feeling movement. I'm honestly still a little nervous until my ultrasound this coming Monday, just wanting to see everything good in there. Hang in there, soon you'll be feeling your little one move and in a few months holding him or her too! :-)
  • Yeah my appt is next week for my 20 week ultrasound. I think i get the most nervous right before it! Just needed tp calm my mind and am glad to hear there are others who cant also.

I am an average build still have a little chub from our first daughter! Thats y i think its so different i weighed 100 pds with my first so i felt everything!!

Thank you everyone for peace of mind! I am sure it will all turn out fine just need to relax!

I will check out the pgal feed although my app barely lets me post! It keeps telling me i dont have permission to do that. Thats y it took so long for me to reply!
