Cloth Diapering a Newborn...

I planned on making fitteds but since here I am in week 16 and haven't started making a single diaper, I decided it might make more sense to turn my bamboo fleece into prefolds for a more economical, time-saving solution.  Has anyone ever used prefolds on a breastfed newborn? I know they poop A LOT! I don't want to make a million prefolds and find out they don't work very well. Any tips?  What cloth diapers are you planning on using in the newborn stage?

  • I have no tips as this is my first but we're planning on using the Kangacare lil'joeys purely based off of the reviews of them. I'll be interested to see the responses to this as well!

  • Thirsties covers are my absolute favorite for prefold covers. The legs have double gussets (I think that is what they're called) so it holds everything in very well. I think prefolds are the way to go for tiny babies at that stage when they don't move or fight you.
  • lil'joeys are super cute and they look like they would work well.  But at $15 per diaper, I don't want to put that much money into our newborn stash.  I don't mind spending more on one-size diapers since they are used for much longer but we will be out of newborns in a flash.  Assuming baby needs changed every 2 hours, it would cost $180 for a one day stash of lil'joeys.

Prefolds with the thirsties covers? I'm so glad to hear it. That will make my life easy :)  How many covers do you think I would need for a three day stash?

ETA I just found Rumparooz NB covers for $8. They look similar to the Thirsties covers. I loved Rumparooz OS so I might go this route.

  • @MamaFroFro That's right! I'd say 10 prefolds a day to be on the safe side. Plus one cover for every 4 prefolds. If baby just pees you can use the same cover for a few changes. The great thing about prefolds is they also make the best burp cloths and cleaning cloths after your done using them as diapers. :-)
  • awesome and thank you! that means I can do my entire newborn stash for under $100. Woot!!!  Thanks for helping me plan :)

  • Yes, prefolds are great! Or flour sacks, you can find them SUPER cheap at Walmart I believe. Get some covers and you're golden.

  • FTM here and planning to cloth diaper too. Can you ladies link to pre folds and the covers you plan on getting? The amount of options when I search is super overwhelming! Looking for tried and true products. Thanks!

We're getting most of the OS and a couple of the NB for when baby is fresh out - mostly for at night so I don't have to worry about blow outs. Doing all of them as a NB would certainly be really expensive!

  • As of right now if I have some hard to find bumgeniuns newborn prints, blueberry simplex newborns, and RaR lil joeys, I will also be doing some prefolds with RaR newborn covers... Most of the all in ones that I have will be outgrown in absorbency before size and with the blueberry simplex newborns they have a pocket to add to them and I have read they last longest in the newborn size :) I am expecting another 6-7 pound baby this time :) I shop at Kelly's closet https://www.kellyscloset.com/Newborn-Diapers_c_894.html. Newborn diapers

https://www.kellyscloset.com/Rumparooz_bymfg_27-0-1.html runparooz they have newborn cover picks for retiring colors or you can buy them individually
  • I'm a FTM and planning on cloth diapering. I think I have decided on Thirsties and we will get a NB and OS stash. I also plan on ordering them with the snaps just so they will be in good condition to use for future kiddos. I would prefer the AIOs but I think for cost reasons we will do mostly covers and prefolds and just a couple AIOs for days we are out and about. Check out the Thirsties website, they have a page that does the cost break down for whatever system you plan on using and what they recommend you start out with quantity wise.

I think my grandma said she used to use flour sacks on her babies!  Last time we used goodmamas and various WAHM fitteds and my grandmother thought they were pretty awesome but still couldn't figure out why I just didn't use disposables since they are so cheap and readily available now.

  • I bought a stash of NB all in ones from a nearby mom. I spent about 70 for 26 diapers. I also intend to use GMD prefolds and XS covers but I got both just in case! I spent a bit over 100 for the whole stash but it's large and gives me options in case one doesn't work as well I also plan to EBF. But I haven't CD a newborn before either. Check out diaper swappers or local forums, NB diapers are typically in great shape because they are barely used. If you are okay with seconds. Either way I hope you find what works. Good luck !

My ILs thought we were insane for wanting to cloth diaper...until they saw how easy it was. MIL was amazed at the whole system (we use pockets and inserts) and that we could just throw them in the washer. When she CD'd (out of financial necessity), they had to put all of their dirty diapers in a toilet or a bucket of water to sit and soak all day and they used these rubber pants over the top... the stories sound horrible. I can see why they didn't understand why we'd choose to do it.

  • This post makes me so happy! I'm also planning to CD this baby from birth, and so far I have quite a lot! I have -
    12 GMD nb prefolds
    14 GMD nb workhorses
6 osocozy bamboo prefolds size 1
    1 rumparooz nb cover
    1 bummis nb cover
    2 pro wrap nb covers
    3 assunta tiny fit covers
    1 loveybums wool cover
    2 lil joeys nb aio
8 THX (lil joeys knock off) nb aios
    3 bum genius nb aios
    2 fuzzibunz xs pockets
    3 Alva nb pockets
1 Star Wars WAHM aio (for DH)
    1 happy flute nb aio
    5 snappis

I think the only thing I really need at this point is some pail liners, and I'm all set! I also have 20 kawaii pure and natural pockets for when the baby out grows the smaller stuff. If you want to use lil joeys but the pice is too much, the THX diapers are an awesome affordable alternative! I got them for 6 bucks a piece.
  • I used green mountain diapers prefolds with a variety of cheap newborn covers and splattered in a few more expensive newborn diapers like lil joeys for fun. It was really easy to cloth diaper my newborn with prefolds and covers. I honestly didn't even need to use snappis or pins or anything. I just turned the back fold out like wings and wrapped them around him and snapped on the cover. No leaks.
  • Any cover with a double gusset is my preferred choice for newborns. I think we have 4 newborn covers and 3 more infant size covers.

I was wondering about that! I heard those snappis don't really work well with bamboo and I didn't want to use pins so yay!

  • I used Imagine Smart Fit prefolds with my newborn, in a jelly roll fold and Snappi. (Just like Green Mt but cheaper and free shipping at www.nickisdiapers.com). I had 24 size small (not size newborn, since my son was almost 9lbs at birth, they fit from birth until about 3 months). I also had 6 kissaluvs size 0 fitteds I used all the time. My Thirsties Duo Wrap size 1 and Rumparooz newborn covers fit the best when he was brand new. My Blueberry newborn covers fit longer, probably still could've used them at 5-6 months, but were a little big at first. I hated Bumgenius newborn AIOs. He outgrew the absorbency after 2 weeks old (would soak it and leak in under an hour). I also had Blueberry newborn simplex and Thirsties AIOs, but honestly the prefolds and covers worked so much better with no leaks. I needed 12-15 diapers a day for the newborn phase.
My son had scrawny long, lean legs so one-sized Bumgenius pocket diapers and covers didn't fit him very well until around 5-6 months or older.
