Measuring "a few weeks off"

hey everyone!
I had my 30 week appointment the other day at 29+2, the doctor felt my fundus and said I was measuring "a few weeks off" at 26.5 instead of 29. I asked her if it was okay and she didn't say either way, but she said I have to get my 32 week growth ultrasound early, at the beginning of next week to make sure everything is okay.
I just wanted to see if any of you have experienced this! Thanks

Re: Measuring "a few weeks off"

  • Im lurkering here today, I have a 9 year old and a 4 year old (almost) and am currently 27 weeks.

With the boys I was always 2 weeks off but with this pregnancy I am measuring off by 4 weeks.  I have had 2 extra ultrasound and they say she is tucked in my back . She is 50 percentile and doctor is happy.

I assume I will have another ultrasound as I know Im still behind in tummy measurements but I have a big ole belly too lol

Hope that helps ease your worry, sometimes its all babies positioning

  • My midwife told me they allow for 3cm each way as it can change depending on how the baby is laying. Mine was 24cm at 24 weeks, 29cm at 28 weeks and 28cm at 29 weeks. It's not an exact science so I don't think you should be worrying too much.
  • Thank you both :)
  • Torso length and positioning can greatly affect fundal measurements too. I have a long torso and baby is currently transverse. He's in the 95th percentile measuring two weeks ahead of EDD, but fundal height is measuring a week behind EDD. Don't be too concerned about the growth scan either, the further along you get the more room there is for error.
  • I tend to measure small. With my daughter I had to get another ultrasound and she was on the smaller end, but perfectly fine. There are a lot of things that can affect the measurement and most times everything is just fine, they just want to make sure.
  • When did you guys start to get fundal height measurements?  I'm at 26 weeks and still haven't ever had anyone measure my stomach.  LO was presumably normal sized at the 20 week anatomy scan (they didn't give me a percentile but said he looked good), but I'm wondering if there's a reason nobody has measured me so far.  My OB commented on my large bump last week when she took LO's heart rate with the doppler but when I asked if it was too big she just laughed and said since I'm on the small side height/weight wise, I'm going to show more.  Every appointment I just pee in a cup, get weight and blood pressure measured, take baby's heart rate, and tell the OB I'm feeling fine.  Is that strange?

My OB didn't start taking fundal measurements until 27 weeks. They will probably start at your next appt. If not, you could always ask.

  • Is measuring small a normal thing for overweight women? I'm supposed to get measured at my next appointment and I'm kinda worried they're going to tell me I'm measuring small. I don't look 29 weeks pregnant.. Up until 2 weeks ago I could comfortably lay on stomach (sometimes it'd slip my mind that I'm not supposed to and I'd flip over the second I caught myself). Everyone and I mean everyone who asks how far along I am looks at me like I'm crazy and says "7 months pregnant where?!" It happened 2 twice today! At first it was just kinda annoying but now I'm starting to kinda worry about it..
  • With my first pregnancy, I was measuring fine until 32 weeks and then measured I think abt 28 weeks (it was 7 years ago so I don't remember the exact numbers). Anyway, they sent me for an emergency ultrasound that day. It turned out that she was just sitting under my ribs and they couldn't measure correctly. So 2 takeaways from this 1) if your doc was really concerned, he/she would have sent you for the scan right away. 2) there are many reasons that you are measuring off. Try not to worry. At least you get to see your baby sooner
